What they don't teach in seminary
Special churches need special care and author, David Ray, knows that this is true for the small churches of the country. With our emphasis on "bigger is better", the pastor of the small church has been ignored. Ray points out the delights of working with small churches and offers a myriad of suggestions to address every need of small church life. He offers hope where most authors have focused solely on the challenges. This book gave me fresh insight and renewed vigor for my own beloved small church. I highly recommend it

Useful Book on Church Imagery and Communication
John David Webb presents an excellent overview of how images and communications processes play a major role in either enabling or disabling a congregation. That is to say, that symbols create symbol systems which create a communication story. The positive or negative nature of these symbol systems and these commication stories plays a defining role in a congregation's ability to thrive, regardless of external conditions. A very useful book for persons seeking to help their congregation become missionally effective.

A CATHOLIC PARISH NECESSITY!
The Liturgy Documents: A Parish Resource, contains all of the information any parish liturgist or musician needs to be correct and knowledgeable when planning a parish liturgy. Being unable to "Rate" official Catholic documents just bound in book format, I will say that it is well presented and asthetically pleasing to use. A copy of these documents should be secured by any persons who are incharge of planning any kind of liturgy or worship for a parish.

The Marriage of Parachurch, Church, and Denomination?
It is time to take a new and unprejudiced look at the parachurch and its relationship to church and denomination. This book makes a great contribution to this effort!

North America is estimated to have more than 350,000 congregations. Alongside these congregations, there are estimated to be as many as 100,000 parachurch organizations.

This book talks about the dramatic reshaping of the North American religious world that is happening through an ever increasing and ever growing collection of parachurch organizations. This is the "only book to look at the parachurch movement as a whole and describe what it is, where it came from, how it operates, who supports it, and what its future is likely to be." [xiv]

The research that led to this book uncovers the movement's roots and clarifies the boundaries of the parachurch. The book is divided into four sections: What is the parachurch and why is it thriving? Who makes up the parachurch? How can the parachurch enlarge its impact? Where is the parachurch headed?

An increasing percentage of services bought or used by congregations will come from the parachurch world rather than the denominational world. Denominations may actually broker many of these parachurch services. However, congregations are also willing to go directly to parachurch organizations to receive desired services. This book will either open up your eyes to this reality, or confirm what you have already knew about this reality.

The Acts Model of Church Growth
In the Upside Down Church Greg Laurie calls on the church to leave slick marketing strategies behind and return to the ministry model demonstrated in the book of Acts. He challenges Christians to refocus their attention to evangelizing their world, committing themselves to God's Word, loving others, praying with power and worshiping in spirit and in truth.

Laurie's writing style is humble, down to earth, well illustrated, relevant, and enjoyable. The testimony of his personal ministry calling and the launching of Harvest Church are interesting and God honoring. This isn't a book of techniques or methods but rather a back-to-the-basics model of Biblical mandates and challenges presented by one of the most effective evangelists and pastors of our generation.

Are we doing "church" or being "church" ?
In this book, Pastor Laurie uses the biblical guidance found in the book of Acts to show what the New Testament church really looked like. We have come a long way from them! The author shows us how we can overcome our traditional methods and get back to the point where we can quit "doing" church and get back to the original root and intent of Jesus Great Commision: go out and show the love of Christ and tell others about what He has done for you! Oh, if only we could emulate the first Christians in this manner! Only read this book if you are ready to have your understanding and beliefs of traditional "church" to be challenged and maybe the modern church would begin multiplying daily as the New Testament church did, "41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 And everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all those who had believed were together, and had all things in common; 45 and they {began} selling their property and possessions, and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46 And day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved." Acts 2:41-47 (NAS)

God bless!

Reminding the church to get back to God's basics.
Using the book of Acts as an example, Greg illustrates how God moves and adds to His church and stresses the importance of following His plan.

Pentecostalism: The World Their Parish (Religion and Modernity)
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Publishers (2001)
Author: David Martin
Amazon base price: $62.95
Used price: $23.98
Average review score:

Still the road to the middle class
Ten years ago in 'Tongues of Fire' David Martin introduced educated readers to the astonishing explosion of Pentecostalism in Latin America. Now he updates the story with fieldwork done by his proteges and others in the 1990s. And he shows how Pentecostalism is burgeoning in Africa, Korea, and China. It's simple really. Enthusiastic Christianity is still the best bridge between the instinctive, fatalistic life on the land and the directed, purposeful life in the city.

This is an important book for anyone trying to grasp the meaning and the future of religion in the modern world. See also Steve Bruce 'God is Dead' and Stark & Finke, 'Acts of Faith' for opposing views on the vigor of religion in the west.
