Philharmonic Concerto: The Life and Music of Sir Malcolm Arnold

Time for a revised edtion from an enterprising publisher
May I briefly urge music lovers to search out this book about Malcolm Arnold. The author, Piers Burton-Page, reminds us that as a player Arnold was Britain's finest young trumpeter. He then developed rapidly as a composer, reaching his widest audiences with many film scores (The Bridge on the River Kwai, Hobson's Choice, and Whistle down the Wind are among the favourites) and brilliant orchestral works.

Burton-Page paints a fascinating portrait of a composer who has worked in many fields, and whose complex personality gives his music a depth and range which are only hinted at in some of his more popular works.

Why is this valuable book no longer available? In late 2001, just when many concerts around the world are celebrating Arnold's 80th birthday, it seems perverse that the book is no longer in print. There must be some enterprising publisher out there who should seize the moment. Get the authoritative Piers Burton-Page to revise the book and bring it up to date. Burton-Page charts the extraordinary ups and downs of a leading musican's life with affection and honesty. Now let's have the revised edition.

The best and only biography of British composer Malcolm Arno
I am biased of course! But I spent 10 years on and off writing about the life and music of Sir Malcolm Arnold - now 75 - and it was a labour of love. He is severely ill with a form of brain damage that has impaired his memory: even so, it was wonderful how he was able to recall incidents from his earliest years in remarkable detail. He was able to help me enormously with the events of his later life too. All this started with a love of his music, and I hope this is reflected in my biography, too. What a shame it is already out of print. Come on some of you publishers out there, how about asking me for an update, and then reprinting

Im A Yellow Pages Account Executive in The UK...
A customer of mine said this to me the other day...

Whats the difference between Yellow Pages and an Iranian terroist?

You can negotiate with an Iranian terroist.

It's great that you would like to know more about how to make our products work for you because we are as passionate about YP as this author obviously is.

It's an accolade to the undeniable success of Yellow Pages that a book like this has been written so if it helps you guys get the most from us; then all the better.

I would say buy this book but also listen to what your rep has to say...we may not all be marketing experts but we do know the book cover to cover and inside out. We know what makes a bad advert and what makes a good one. We understand what buttons to press for the users of the product and we honestly do try to make you guys as much money as possible no matter how small your investment.

Bear in mind though that a wonderbra does nothing for a flat chest...we try to move your advertising programme forward for that very reason. The title of this book may mislead you into thinking that you can still have a tiny advert in one classification in one area of your country when in reality, you really may need to cover a wider area and appear in all the classifications that are relevent to your business. If no-one sees your advert then it makes no difference how good the information is contained there because you have just lost an enquiry.

I suggest that you closely monitor the response of your advert with YP, ask your rep to carefully go through all the demographics and take the time to listen what s/he has to say. Then make a decision based on fact.

For those companies who only spend a few hundred dollars but expect to make a million ask yourself why you are surprised when it doesn't happen.

I hope this book gives your business the edge that you're looking for with your Yellow Pages advertising but bear in mind that cost wil always be inextricably linked to reward.

Regimental History - King's African Rifles
This is an excellently researched and well compiled history of the King's African Rifles. The author has been most diligent in including the detail of the history of the various battalions - and the other associated units from the region. For the most part, however, the reminiscences of former officers have been dredged to produce only the principal facts of the subject, and few of the personal views. Additionally, few of the British soldiers and even fewer of the African soldiers appear to have been consulted, which is a terrible pity, as I know that many had vivid personal accounts to be told, and which are now probably lost. From personal knowledge, a number of the years from WWII onwards would have benefitted tremendously from such consultation - in 1996 I met an mzee from the Pare area southeast of Moshi who told me some of the tales from his days in Burma. Sadly, most of those men are now gone. It must be accepted that there will always be this sort of limitation on any Regimental history; they tend to be written by the most senior of figures involved, and are usually very glossy where glory is concerned, opaque where less honourable deeds and attitudes in their particular circles are concerned. A much larger and better-annotated photographic account must also surely have been available. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly recommend this account to anyone interested in the history of East Africa as one which can be largely trusted, while contemporary revisionism in the region is increasingly distorting the truth of those years.

Howards End
Published in Unknown Binding by Macmillan ()

Average review score:

A very accessible overview of what the critics have to say.
Malcolm Page's slender volume is a very accessible work. It moves around the various criticism that 'Howards End' has received over the years. Page's survey of the criticism is handled sensibly and is a very good starting point for wider reading about the author and his novel. His own critical voice is a very balanced one and Page adopts a reasonable stance on a writer who seems to attract fairly extreme reactions. Of particular note is the short section dealing with E.M.Forster and feminism. This section illustrates Page's ability to survey the criticism and then offer an informed opinion. Overall, this volume serves as a very useful starting point for a study of the novel.

The Autobiography of Albert Einstein/Begins on Page 9 No Capitalization or Indentation
Published in Paperback by Serpent's Tail (1993)
Authors: Gerhard Roth and Malcolm Green
Amazon base price: $13.99

A wierd book with a misleading title
This book has nothing to do with Albert Einstein, the scientist, apparently. I can't imagine why the author chose this title for his collection of strange and disjointed thoughts. I am careful about what I feed my mind and will not read anymore of this book. It is the most diappointing book I have ever tried to read.

Biological Basis Of Thought !Pure Poetry!Yellow Secretions!
either the other reviewer of this book is a practical joker, or there is a different book called the autibiography of albert einstein that was written by gerhard roth and translated by malcolm green.or perhaps there is indeed a third possibility. one that is much more sinister. this book has nothing to do with einstein. if you want to read his autobiography look elsewhere. this book is a post-modern experimental obsessive-compulsive sort of investigation into the chemicals which spurt around the body of einstein and create as a biproduct his subconcious. and maybe its not even that. if you like your literature to be bizarre and have nothing to do with albert einstein, go ahead and read this. i really like it. but i also like to drink cough syrup, so...

The Book
This is possibly the best book ever written. Its a wonderfully crafted book by Einstein that portrays the truths of ambition, love, and skill that go against modern views of success and status. A must read for anyone interested in science, knowledge, and life.
