This book was very educational about radio.
This book made me realize that radio is not just about playing music. It is about sending and reciving waves to make the public happy.

The History of Radio 1899 to 1954
This book focuses on the history of radio from 1899 to 1954 and thus has nothing to do with RCA's CED VideoDisc system, but one of the key figures in the account is David Sarnoff, so a lot of the early history of RCA is covered. In addition to Sarnoff, the book focuses on the technical radio pioneers Edwin Howard Armstrong and Lee de Forest. In some respects this book is a reflection on the development of the modern computer, as parallels can be drawn between these radio pioneers and computer industry figures Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Larry Ellison.

Yes, Radio is Airwave Magic!
Read some years ago & book now lost. Fascinating in that it vividly displays the genius, sometimes luck, unstinting effort, inspiration, and often the "happy" accident that is part of basic effort when one breaks ground in a new quest in pursuit of a dream. Much of this history could not be repeated in our 2000 world because those opportunities no longer exist. An example is Sarnoff's success in getting meaningful work at the tender age he did in the story! Mankind's unflagging quest goes on but in different ways. The first way of making news available at the instant it occurs certainly shrunk the world. The process continues. Recommended highly for the radio buff of any age!

Where was the editor?
The book contains good information, but it is so poorly written and edited that it is, at times, incoherent. I could not get past the first thirty pages.

A good starting point but...
This book has a lot of info for someone who wants to start in this biz. I liked her input on what to include/exclude on your demo tape. However, some of the expert advice is "take classes" and "find an agent" - duh! She also doesn't seem to know much about the nuts & bolts of recording, for example: "take your headphones off if you're making comments about the producer or engineer, they pick up everything." Um, Terry the *microphone* picks up everything regardless of where your headphones are.

Good Advice in Less-Than-Perfect Form
The massive amount of helpful information in this book is marred by only two things:

o It desperately needs some copy editing to remove the sentence fragments and other "word-processing glitches," and

o The discussions of technology need to be reviewed by someone with a firmer grasp of how such things actually work.

Because of this, I would give it 4-1/2 stars instead of 5 if that rating were available.

In the big picture, however, these are minor quibbles with a book that otherwise covers a lot of ground and answers a lot of questions that aspiring voice actors would have. It provides an in-depth look at the voice-over business (with particular focus on Los Angeles) from the perspective of a busy, in-demand performer who has paid enough dues to know what she's talking about, and because it is fairly new it covers recent developments that older books omit. Certainly well worth the modest investment for anyone wanting to know more about this business.

Great reference and learning tool for pros & laymen alike!
As a pest control educator, I have LOTS of pest control reference books. "Truman's Scientific Guide" is my most used book. While others may have some higher levels of specificity at times, Truman's is the best overall!

Still just a piece of the picture
This book has been informative in that I have learned a great deal about the political and militaristic problems Washington endured during America's push for independence. I have a feeling that, without Washington's sacrifice, America as we know it probably wouldn't occur. However, I also think of the famous quote attributed to Napoleon that "History is the myth men choose to believe." While Thomas Paine wrote about independence for the colonies, he also tore into the concept of slavery as immoral, so it wasn't as if no one was talking about this issue. If Washington would have "stepped up" and abolished slavery then and there, so that all men (and women) were truly created equal, as I said before, America might not be here. It was a politically divided and bankrupt country. I don't consider those reasons justification for sacrificing another person's human rights. The racial problems we face today stem from a lack of identity stolen from a stolen people

who did much of the work to build this country in its early days and, while the opprtunity was there, given nothing in return. "Patriot Sage" is an excellent insight into many aspects of Washington's life of which I was ignorant (like his influence on the Constitutional Convention) Sadly, some of its essays are too right-wing, to the point of Clinton bashing. What modern era president could really live up to the accomplishments of the one who defined the job's parameters ? One essay focuses on the moral symbolism of Washington now devoid in today's presidents, while another openly admits he gambled and sought prostitutes. To be read overall with some perspective.
