Text and Illustrations A perfect combination
This book is very fun to read and of particular interest to toddlers. I absolutely love Barbara Reid's plasticene illustrations. The poetry in the book is wonderful. The book takes about 5 minutes to read, and it is easy for a young toddler to join in. The text is repetitious without being monotanous.

It is one of my 22 month old's favorite books.

Birds, Birds, Birds.
This charming little book uses alliteration, assonance, and rhyming words to describe various types of birds and how they live. The sentences are written in poetry that's cadence and structure enhances the types of birds being discussed. The claymation illustrations are playful and capture children's imagination, but without distracting from the focus of the book's lessons. A fun book to read.

Amazing illustrations, beautiful text...younger kids too!
My two year old adores birds, and of all of our bird books, this is one of his absolute favorites. I'm not sure how much of the text he understands, but the illustrations, done in clay art, are beautiful, and he loves to identify the various species.

I don't mind reading it over and over because the poetic text stands up to intense rereadings and I love the cadence and rhythm of the text. The author has managed to emulate the careening freedom of flight by the flitting, dipping, racing style of her poetry. This is one of those books I wish we had in hardcover.

Invaluable resource at a great price -- great gift!
I include this book with every new-baby gift I give -- it barely costs more than a card and I get endless thank-yous for it. Parents use it as constant reference for the first few years. In addition to recommendations for the best toys, books, and videos, it includes safety tips and classic games to play with the new person in the house. It's easy to carry along and refer to. And succinct and easy to read during those years when you're too tired to get through more than a paragraph of anything. Really stands out in the sea of baby books: something practical that gets used again and again. What more could you ask for...

Excellent book for anyone interested in what toys to buy.
This book is a well-written, well-organized book which is great for all parents of babies and toddlers, as well as anyone else (grandparents, etc.) who would like to be well-informed about all aspects of the toys they buy their children.

Great Resource for Baby Toys
I was looking for a present for my baby's first birthday and was overwhelmed with the choices in the store. I looked at the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, 2003 and it greatly simplified the process for me. It not only told me which toys one year olds enjoy, but how best to use the toys from an educational standpoint. I can't imagine ever purchasing a toy for a child without first looking at this book. I would highly recommend it.

Oppenheim's Do It Again
This crew never stops. Thankfully, there are people in this world who spend the time actually helping parents. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, 2003 is as great as ever. I can't even imagine how they rate all these toys, books, videos, cd-roms, etc. Once again Toy Portfolio, 2003 is excellent. Their recommendations have become my bible. I share this book with every parent I know and I have yet to find any parent who hasn't gone out and bought it for themselves. Thank you so much and I look forward to 2004.

An excellent resource for those involved in the Read Aloud program in West Virginia and other states. Very informative and thorough. Was hoping it might still be available! Will have to see if any revisions are out there!

A VISUAL TREAT
This book contains masterful illustrations, done in a rainbow of clay. Each page is a treat, executed so skillfully that children will be inspired to use clay to create a picture, in addition to the customary sculptures. Adults will enjoy gazing at the illustrations with children of any age. Every page features birds in a colorful setting, and they are so whimsical and attractive that you will see your feathered friends in a new way. You just can't flip hurriedly through this book, but savor each page.

beautiful book
This book is a family favorite. I'ts no wonder with the evokative poetry, and the atmospheric illustrations. We live in New Mexico were there are few deciduous trees, so this book shows my son what they are like and it reminds me of the changing seasons growing up in the mid-west.

Fun to read again and again
This is a great book for bedtime or to take on the road for Dr.s visits and downtime for children primarily under 8. Easy to read in a few minutes or if your kids are getting the swing of the easy rebus style of the book-they'll want to read it again and again. Colorful water color pictures let you or your child read the pictures into the worded sentences. Mostly in rhyme and a little silly, you'll find yourselves giggling at the thought of "Kangaroos paddling canoes" or "Giraffe sailing in rafts". Our second copy, now with precious pages missing, has taught our children the rythym and cadence of rhyme and helps them anticipate word connections. "Mother bear said, this time don't forget to comb your hair" with the comb illustrated by a drawing of a pretty yellow comb. The next time mother bear had to remind little bear to comb his hair. The word comb was written out-but a picture instead of a little bears brown hair was pictured for the reader to use as the rebus. What a confidence builder this lovely book is. A real find for readers with children who love word play and rhyme-It will keep both the reader and the read-ee amused for many fun filled hours-
