A must for historical fiction fans
Goodman's extensive research of the period lends the ring of authenticity to a gripping narrative. The reader is led gently into the period while pursuing the story of a girl determined to mold her own future. Young readers will realize how difficult it was for their great-grandmothers to achieve a dream beyond marriage and childcare -- something they take for granted. Jess is an unforgettable character. I lent the book to friends and relatives, and their mutual comment was: "When will the sequel come out?"

Goodman Does A Great Job
I loved reading Jess. Goodman makes history fascinating and fun. She has extensive knowledge of the 19th century. I especially enjoyed learning about the medical practices of that time. She brings the young girl Jess to life with scenes that made me cry and some that made me laugh out loud. I highly recommend this book. It is one of my favorites.

The unbiased truth from the beginning to...the future.
I was raised in a rural part of Idaho, and was 17 during the summer of the Ruby Ridge siege. At the time all I got from the local media was that a crazy mountain man who had warrants for his arrest was holding Federal officers at bay on a remote mountain hours north of where I lived.
Eleven years later I read this book. It gave me the true story, from the beginning, of what really happened during that 11 day span that became such a historic event in our great state.
What it came down to, even past the feds having it out for Randy Weaver, was a Terrible lesson in miscommunication. When word got back to Washington, it was said that Randy Weaver had government agents "pinned down" by his "compound". The fact is, hours before, Federal agents had trespassed on the property, surprised Randy, his son, their dog, and their friend Kevin Harris. The result was the family dog being shot in the back, 12 year old Sammy Weaver being shot in the back as he ran away yelling "I'm coming dad!" and a Federal Marshall shot to death in self defense (I don't think there is much doubt who shot first).

In the days that follow, more blood would be shed; (Vicki Weaver is shot to death in the head by a sniper while holding her baby). Information would be re-scripted, re-tooled, and eventually covered up in many cases. One of the most compelling parts of the story is knowing why they stayed holed up in their cabin that long. Anyone that had ventured out before had been shot at!

Another interesting note that I did not know till reading this book was the neo-nazi connection. Weaver was not a neo-nazi, as the media portrayed him to be. He did however, know a couple of them in his passings in the area. The money and time spent to set up Randy so he would squeal on the Neo Nazi's was ridiculous. When he simply said "no, I don't want to have any part of it, I just want to mind my own business and be left alone". Now you would think they would honor this and let him be, but no. They changed the rules of engagement so that they could ultimately and hopefull slaughter all involved...and for what? Because they had different religious beliefs? What possible threat did one quiet mountain family have againt anyone?

On a lighter note, it was nice to see the new experiences that the oldest daughter enjoyed when moving in with relatives back in Iowa. Getting to see her first movie on a theatre screen (which led her to get a job in the theatre soon after) and listening to rock music was something many of us take for granted. This book is a must read if you are of an open mind. Despite religious or polotical views, everyone should read this book. It may change you're outlook on many things, if only for the better. I only hope there was a lessoned learned somewhere by those responsible, after what happened on a remote Idaho Mountain in the summer of '92.

Disturbing and Important
The book is both disturbing and important. It traces the tragedy of Ruby Ridge, Idaho from the very beginning, even before Idaho. It profiles Randy and Vicki Weaver when they first meant and follows through their marriage, their children and their move to Idaho. It explores their different beliefs in depth and both their problems and triumphs throughout their marriage.

It explains how the U.S. Marshall Service and the ATF first noticed Randy Weaver and why they were interested in him. Did they initially set him up? It explains what the reaction of the FBI was when they were called to the scene. How the government agencies invovled escalated the problem to a new level. How the lack of communication within the government made a bad situation worse.

It follows the aftermath of the seige and the shootings into the evidence gathering stage and through the trial. It follows the survivors and what they have become, their tribulations.

This is a very important book for everyone to read. It is about lack of tolerance in others beliefs. About the governments miscommunications and lack of sharing information between departments. This has been going on for years, way before 9-11. It delves into the fact that government agencies don't like to admit they were wrong and will sacrifice the little guy to protect the big guy. It show that there is hard working decent people working for the government as well as complete self serving, intolerant, career mongers looking for nothing but advancement and the connections to insulate themselves from the decisions they've made.

Randy Weaver and his family thought differently than many. They wanted to be left alone. And they were pushed and pushed to the breaking point. Attacked and surrounded and attacked again. The Weaver's paid the price for their beliefs but the government agents that overstepped their bounds have never been brought to justice or even held accountable with more than meager 15 day suspensions. The courts felt the government wrong enough to award a monetary settlement to the Weaver's. When will the total truth come out?

This is an excellent book full of information and presented well. It is engrossing and pulls you in from the beginning. It reads well. I recommend it to everyone.

One stop shopping for the serious small cap investor.
Klein and Lederman have provided serious students of the small cap investing universe with a valuble reference guide. The book examines the small cap segment of the market from a variety of perspectives, including trading, stock selection and international investments. Each of the chapters is written by a practioner in the industry which makes it readable to investors lacking the training (or patience) to wade through more academically orientated tomes. I would strongly reccomend this book to anyone who wants to go beyond the "hype" that underpins most books on small caps.

Excellent book for the investment professional.
This book covers all aspects (in-depth) of small-cap stocks for the investment professional. I used the book as the basis for my MBA thesis on a quantitative small-cap stock model

Yoga Youth and Reincarnation

Author: Jess Stearn

Great introduction to Yoga and other principals
I enjoyed the book tremedously. Jess Stearn's writing was easy to follow and I liked his non-judgemental way. He wrote about his own personal experience with yoga, and how his past projects influenced his way of thinking (The Sleeping Prophet), and his doubts with the concept of reincarnation. He touched up the benefit of yoga experienced by himself and the people he interviewed. I learned a lot about yoga, not just asanas, but also the yoga way of life. A great introduction to Yoga. If you are serious about yoga, you should read it.

A fine Yoga manual with beautiful photos of Yoga Asanas.
Jesse Stearn's account of his discovery of the discipline of Yoga. This NY Daily news reporter had been letting his health go after years at a desk job. He meets Marcia Moore whose Concord, Massachusetts Ashram was one of the first of its kind in the US. He discovers a way back to health and well being which requires no special equipment and not much space, and unlike sports, can be performed by anyone in any condition with dramatic results.

Considering that this book was published in 1965 before the subsequent glut of literature on the subject, it should be regarded as the pioneering work which aroused an interest in Yoga in America. The black and white photos of Marcia Moore in various Yoga postures are both stunning and inspiring.

Jess Mowry's REAL 1st novel.
A lot of people think that "Way Past Cool" is Jess Mowry's 1st novel but its really this one. I like this book just as much as all of his others. This is a good story and really tells what things must have been like for inner city black kids before gangstuh rap really started and crack was still a new drug. If you like Jess Mowry's books then you can't have a full collection without this one. You should also read "Concrete Candy" by Apollo if you like this book.

We can never have too much inspiration...
It's a thoughtful collection that goes from Socrates to Vince Lombardi to Charles Barkley. My first copy was gift and I went out and bought two more. One for a friend who coaches JV football and one for my son's x-country coach. Who said this? "Children today are tyrants. They contradict their parent, gobble their food..." Surprise! Socrates 400B.C. Need a quick quote for a dinner... you are sure to find one. My high rating is because I wouldn't loan this book for fear of not getting it back and I want it around for my grandchildren.

Jess Lederman is a genius
Jess Lederman, one of the editors of this book, has written or edited many books on mortgage banking, markets and interest rate risk - he is simply the most-informed writer on the subject, and if this is your area of interest I recommend you pick up anything he's been involved with and read it.

An excellent resource, sure to slash your billable hours.
The list of books written on hedge funds is a short one, and this book is certainly the finest on the subject. The professionals who contributed their specialized knowledge are of the highest caliber, and better yet, many of them can be reached for counsel. Any investor with the capacity to invest at this level ought to know the mechanics of the various methodologies as clearly presented by the authors. I found all of the information to be useable and valuable information with absolutely no filler. Particularly of interest to me was all of the legal, tax and regulatory information which quite literally provided me with a blueprint from which I will begin building my (as GP) Private Investment Partnership. This book will eliminate countless hours with a securities attorney because now I know exactly how to direct the counsel.
