Deals with many issues in workspace design
O'Neill's book does a wonderful job of providing examples on work teams and their issues of space and environmental control. Data and results from his research (case studies, field studies, and experiments) are very helpful. Sometimes the book is difficult to follow because of the way the chapters are organized.

Answers so many questions a parent has
I read this book over the weekend and have already sent out a mass email to parents I know telling them to read this book! This book succinctly and honestly answers questions that I'm always hearing on the "parent circuit." Not only about about teasing, but about all social skills, popularity, being ostracized, girls worrying they are fat-- you name it, it is probably addressed in this book. And the authors do a wonderful job of letting you know when you are worrying too much, or too little about an issue. A must read!

Success at First Certificate
I used this book to teach ENL English in Greece in its first edition for the old FCE and since it was published in its second edition in 1997 for the new version of the test. I have found that the book presents the material required for a good pass on the UCLES FCE broadly enough without burdening the student with too academic a description of the Grammar. Its grammar exercises, supplemented by the exercises in the workbook, are brilliant in their review of English grammar and in the way they prepare the student for the exam. Also, it's writing course, which I consider the best of all from all the course books I have used, is not only accurate, but teaches text formating not only brilliantly for the exam, but also for use in everyday situations unrelated to the exam. The only flaw I saw was in the companion: its reading texts were too difficult. However, its collocation exercises cannot be found elsewhere.

He's done it again! More, more!!
...

It's true, a picture is worth a thousand words... but in the case of Brother Mickey's work, the words make the pictures even more alive. He takes the time to visit actual workplacs to capture details before beginning each "portrait." The attention to (and inclusion of)detail is magnificent and adds authenticity to an already marvelous work.

This book -- and its predecessor -- is a must for the bookshelves of religious eduators in all settings, and makes a great gift!

Can't wait for next year!

The Saints -- Heavenly beings brought down to earth
In his wonderful "Patrons and Protectors: Occupations," Franciscan Oblate Brother Mickey McGrath has achieved the best of both worlds: he's combined wonderful scholarship and tradition (both long-standing hallmarks of the Church) and mixed in just the right dollup of tongue-in-cheek, whimsical, contemporary art. Brother Mickey has a strong affinity for his subjects, and it's contagious. It's obvious he loves the heroes and heroines of his faith (aka "saints) . . . he's come to know them well (including their quirks, foibles and unique qualities) and he just can't wait to introduce us to them! And he does it with a twist! There are no anemic apostles or dispeptic disciples here! Brother Mickey has taken some of the most popular saints, researched how they came to be revered as "patrons" of specific occupations, and then depicted them in a contemporary modern setting. St. Anne, known as the mother of the Blessed Mother and honored as the patron saint of housewives, is seen sitting over a much-deserved cup of tea, clothed in a "St. Mary's" sweatshirt, in the middle of a post-breakfast-messy kitchen. St. Barbara, the patron saint of architects is seen as an upscale young African American professional seated in a state-of-the-art studio before an easel. St. Lawrence, the patron of cooks? He's decked out in a chef's hat, "Turn me over" apron (a reference to the saint's legendary demise on a grill). St. John the Baptist de LaSalle, the patron of school teachers is seen, sleeves rolled up, tie askew, gazing longingly out the classroom window after his students have left (his favorite part of the day). The list continues. And no detail is overlooked (or included without a reason). Brother Mickey has replaced the time-honored tradition of bestowing haloes on his subjects, instead circling their heads with items found naturally within the setting in which they find themselves. Business women, hospital administrators, opera singers, astronomers, carpenters, farmers, aviators . . . they're all here. The old saints with a new look! And best yet, Brother Mickey accompanies each of his colorful pictures with text describing the background on each patron, complementing it with reflections written by people who actually work in the field (hence "Mr. (Fred) Rogers" waxes eloquently on television as he pays tribute to St. Clare, the patron of that industry). As exciting as this beautifully illustrated book is is the anticipation of more in Brother Mickey's patron saint series! A great book for religious educators or anyone in search of a new way of seeing relevance in a time-honored tradition.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE SOCIAL ASPECT OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT
For parents with a desire to learn more about the psychological development of their child and the profound impact of peer pressure, this book contains some valuable information. The book deals with various aspects of development such as rejection, neglect and acceptance. The book helps the reader to understand how those elements can have a psychological influence on the child and their social interaction with others.

An extremely important section of the book deals with the school system itself and how changes need to be made to better adapt the learning environment to a childs emotional needs if the child is to development in a positive and socially acceptable manner. The book has been well researched and would be of particular interest not only to parents, but anyone invovled with the care and education of children.

If you have children, or work with them, this is for you!
Michael Thompson, Ph.D. is the author of the bestseller "Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys. His latest, written with compassion, humor, and practicality, is an insightful look into the sometimes mysterious world of child development.

As a special education teacher, and soon to be school counselor, I have long held that those who have children, and work with children need a keener understanding on why children do the things they do, if we are to care for them, and serve them better. This book will go along way in fostering this understanding among parents, teachers, and practioners because it helps us understand how a child views her world.

Written in conjuction with journalist Catherine O'Neill Grace and Lawrence Cohen, Ph.D. "Best Friends, Worst Enemies..." provides such a keen insight into the social lives of children, it is almost as if it was written by a child, because they have such an excellent perspective.

This book is important.
Alice Miller (author of The Drama of the Gifted Child and Breaking Down the Walls of Silence) has long emphasized that if we are serious about solving society's problems, we must focus on how we treat children --- as individual families and as a cultural. This book is an excellent contribution toward that end.

From thought-provoking observations to practical suggestions about solutions, Best Friends, Worst Enemies is an effective education about social problems that begin in childhood, but do not end in childhood. One point the authors make that interests me greatly is that when one child is being bullied by others, the majority of children witnessing the abuse will either do nothing to intervene or they will join in with the bullying. If you think that is not a reflection of the society in which we live, think again.

As a psychotherapist and author (Embracing Fear, HarperSanFrancisco) who emphasizes personal responsibility and facing fears head on, I hope that more than just parents and educators will read this book. I think there is something here for us all to think about --- no, to do something about.

What is Life? The Next Fifty Years : Speculations on the Future of Biology

A worthy tribute and tome in its own right
A facinating journey of physicists, molecular biologists, geneticists, etc. trying to capture the power of speculation as Erwin Schroedinger did 50 years earlier. Fans of Steven J. Gould will find the (sometimes contrary) opinions of other learned men of science equally stimulating as his own chapter.

An Great Book
This is an important and wonderful book. I have re-read many of the essays several times. The editors did a terrific job. You don't have to have read What Is Life to enjoy and learn from this book (skip the S.J. Gould essay, it's the only worthless one in the book). When my house catches on fire, this is one of the half-dozen books I will grab.

Pray it! Study it! Live it!
The Catholic Youth Bible is an incredible resource that anyone, any age will appreciate! The motto of "Pray it! Study it! Live it! truly sums up the purpose of the Bible. Engaging articles found throughout the text challenge the reader to life application. There are articles that help you learn more about scripture from a contextual approach as well. The Catholic Youth Bible could be used in many situations - the classroom, bible study groups, and for personal growth. "There's never been a Bible like this before" is definitely true and I guarantee this Bible will be one that you can't put down! Good book!

A Bible the Teens Dive Into...
The Catholic Youth Bible is hands down the best bible to put into the lives of teens. In my 16+ years of youth ministry, I have never seen any bible that Catholic kids keep with them and use like this one. Never have I had a bible that prompted our teens to say to me, "I was reading this part of that bible you gave us and I wonder what you think about....." I don't have any problem with the "not authorized for liturgy" that is sometimes the critique of this edition. You know what "authorizes" this bible for me? The fact that it is able to grab hold and draw of the interest of young people, to foster in them a hunger for the real presence of Christ in the scriptures and empower them to seek answers in God's word. This is a bible that even kids who think of themselves as "non religious" dive right into as soon as they get it. It is appealing and provides substantial commentary and support. This bible has become "the" bible of the youth programs that I direct.

Digging into Scripture
As a current Youth Minister, I find that the youth whom I am working with are constantly digging into the Catholic Youth Bible, and that makes me so excited. With the exciting design and layout, the Catholic Youth Bible is very appealing for teens to pick up and read. I have used many of the pray it, study it, and live it articles in various settings such as youth group meetings, confirmation class, staff meetings and such. The suject index makes it easy to find scripture passages and articles that relate with what I am speaking about. I had one youth remark to me that everytime they open up the Catholic Youth Bible they find something new about it. Parents are shared with me that their teens cannot put it down. As a young adult, I love using it for my personal prayer time. What I find to be the most attractive feature of the Catholic Youth Bible is that it is so personable. The stories of God are seen not only through scripture, but in articles that I can relate to. It makes one keep digging and digging for new understandings and actualizations of the stories of our faith.
