This book is by far the absolute best book that will ever be written about Elvis. The authors are sincere Elvis fans who have done their homework, and it truly shows in this masterpiece. Whether you are a lifelong Elvis fan, or an "outsider looking in", this book is a must read. If you are an Elvis skeptic, read this book and you will be smitten for good. Kudos to the authors!!!

At last, a book written with love and respect, like Elvis deserved. The authors know and love their subject and it shows... they're not trying to make us believe that Elvis was perfect but that he was a very human being with all the good and bad that come with it. Great suggestions of books, CD's, videos and web sites. You'll know Elvis more intimately after reading this book... and that's a very enjoyable way to know him, isn't it?

I haven't read the book, but thanks to "A Reader from Bryn Mawr"'s review title, I don't have to. PLEASE do not display titles like "Did she fall? Did she jump? Was she pushed?" Wow, I can't wait to get to the end of the book now! The ending isn't going to be much of a surprise, is it?

I'm not telling you the answer, but I will tell you that the movie is wrong. ;-) "BUtterfield 8" is one of John O'Hara's most famous novels, and its fame is well-deserved. Gloria Wandrous, the novel's ill-fated heroine, is a testament to O'Hara's ability to create characters. She inspires pity, annoyance, admiration, and just about every other emotion you can imagine. "BUtterfield 8" reads smoothly and paints a vibrant picture of New York. It also marks the first appearance of O'Hara's fascinating alter-ego, Jimmy Malloy. A good read for those who have never heard of John O'Hara as well as those who have read all 14 novels and 400+ short stories.

Moving, and so beautiful. And that rarest of all for such moving stories-- rarely (if ever) hackneyed. The story "A Few Trips and Some Poetry" particularly stands out.

"The Cape Cod Lighter" is a collection of short stories from the prolific John O'Hara. To put things simply, if you enjoy his other short stories, you will likely enjoy this group as well. As usual, the stories offer brilliant character sketches and brief glimpses into the lives of twentieth century Pennsylvanians. This book is a treat because most of its stories do not appear in the larger, more common John O'Hara anthologies. However, my favorite aspect of "The Cape Cod Lighter" is its introduction. The introduction is a rant against critics and a defense of fiction (hilarious and pure O'Hara). Recommended.

I own a first edition of this book. It is a collection of 26 short stories. John O'Hara defined the twentieth century short story. This is one of his best collections consisting of stories for the most part published in The New Yorker from 1945 to 1947. He gives a glimpse and a memory into middle class white life, the things people thought about, the things they fretted and aimed for. It's the small detail at times that frames the atmosphere of the story. On the flyleaf, there's a explanation that Hellbox is a printer's receptacle for broken type.

This book, from the greatest literature teacher ever, should definitely be available. As interesting as O'Hara is, Grebstein on O'Hara - or on anything - is vastly more intriguing.

This book is a must for all John O'Hara fans. Historical pictures and notes on this author - a great work!

at George Lockwood's wall . . . ." So begins my favorite work of John O'Hara (except perhaps for the "Sermons and Soda Water" trilogy, but that's another review). "The Lockwood Concern" follows the lives of four generations of Lockwoods as they gain social status. The characters are brilliantly drawn and unforgettable, particularly Abraham, the second Lockwood in the line and the one who names the "concern." As always, the dialogue leaps from the page and the strains of plot are too subtle to be properly discussed in a brief review. This is some of John O'Hara's best work and I cannot imagine why it is not frequently reprinted. You will not regret reading it.

John O'Hara, once an equal to Hemingway or Fitzgerald in the realm of the modern short story, shows us once again why he was so popular--and so praised--for forty years. These stories seem to encompass everything middle America became after the 1970s, about the time of O'Hara's death. O'Hara has a simple writing style that nonetheless captures the complexities in human relations, to say nothing of the complications of human sexuality. His characters were "shacking" up long before the sexual revolution of the 1960s and he was one of the first of the modern writers to show us the destructiveness of alcohol and the terrors of small-minded people that surround us all with their bitter stench of failure. These novellas catch him at his best and you'll never forget "Andrea".

These are absolute gems, and whenever I see someone reading John Cheever or Raymond Carver I tell them to put those overrated hacks away and to check out John O'Hara.
