The New American Diet

A must have!
This book is excellent, even if just for the recipes. I have yet to make something that I didn't like. It takes an average American diet and simply identifies ways to make it healthier. I really haven't had to change my menu or the types of food I eat. I've just made a few alterations. Now I spend less money on groceries, very little time in the kitchen, and I feel so much better about what I'm eating. Plus I'm not on a diet to starve myself or only eat one type of food. I can still enjoy almost everything I like. This book is definitely worth more than the money spent on it. It is leading me to a life of being a lot healthier.

Great Low-Fat Recipes Included
We bought the hard cover version of this wonderful book in 1989. We have worn it to a frazzle, with pages of our favorite recipes now falling out of the book. First, it scientifically lures you into a mind set of better eating habits, and then it gives you excellent recipes by which to get there. We highly recommend it!!!

Commendation for the Connors
This book was/is extremely helpful to me as an individual recently diagnosed with idiopathic cardiomyopathy. I do have a degree in Biology, but I think this book would be just a readable if I did not. Not only does the extensive list of foods and their CSI numbers help me on a daily basis, but also the recipes which designate the fat content, fiber, calories, salt, CSI number, and number of servings and/or serving size. I am a member of Weight Watchers because I recognize that even being overweight a little adds extra capillaries to be pumped through to feed that fat, putting additional work on the heart. The calories, fat content, fiber, and serving size are needed in Weight Watchers to use their point system. I'm also on a salt-restricted diet ...another content number given. I originally checked this book out at the public library. I am now ordering it on Amazon.com. I've researched a number of books via the library but only ordered a few. That should tell you how valuable this book is to me. Thanks!

Simple and authoritative, guide to control of high lipids.
Dr. and Mrs Connor are, respectively, a world-class lipidologist who teaches at the Oregon Health Sciences University, and an amazingly competent dietician who cooks each recipe in this book 5-6 times herself. The Connors devised a method by which you may determine, by means of a single number, to what extent a particular food is good or bad for your arteries (foods ranging from fruits to Big Macs) - it is called the CSI or Cholesterol Saturated Fatty Acid Index. You use the book as a reference or as a cookbook: pages of foods are listed by category, with their CSI, and number of grams of fat; the recipes are well-written and tasty. The index is complete and easy to access. I use this book constantly for the education of my patients with hyperlipidemia.

Jellies: Living Art
Filled with the amazing jelly photography these nature essays are written by women who truly know the genre! Terry Tempest Williams has written a beautiful foreword and Judith Connor and Nora Deans wrote sparkling essays about they're involvement with these strange animals. This book also mirrors the new exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. A treasure!

O. Henry: The Legendary Life of William S. Porter.
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (1970)
Author: Richard, O'Connor

So interesting you'll forget it's nonfiction!
At the conclusion of his book "A Twist at the End," Steven Saylor highly recommends this biography of O. Henry. I do, too.

This book sheds so much light on both William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) and American life in the late 19th century and early 20th century. O'Connor meticulously documents his sources in a way that never interferes with his story. About three-fourths of the way through the book, I suddenly realized that this non-fiction work is far more interesting than the novel ("A Twist at the End") that Saylor wrote about one part of O. Henry's life.

If you enjoy biographies, try to find a used copy of this book.

The Module is one major butt kicker, and I LOVE IT!
As someone who helped playtest this module I just have to say it really adds something back to the Ravenloft setting that some of the recent modules have been lacking. DMs looking for an excellent challenge for mid to high level parties need to get this adventure and do mean things to good people!

Van Richten's Guide to Ghosts (Ravenloft)
Published in Paperback by Wizards of the Coast (1992)

Brings the uncorporeal undead to life
This book is perhaps the best of the VR's Guides because it has a compleat catalog about this fiends. "Van Richten" includes too his experiences with the ghosts and related texts. The subject of the book, uncorporeal spirits, are fascinating for beeing an undead chained to the normal life, as VR explains, to finish a task or because they're linked to a place, a person or an event. To finish a RPG game with ghosts, the players have to search for clues (the history of the ghost), like a detective or mystery stories. That means to know much about human beings (love, passion, hate, desire, vengeance) and feel the sense of tragedy and deception that are the mark of Ravenloft Games.

Where the World Does Not Follow: Buddhist China in Picture and Poem

Stunning.
Where the World Does Not Follow combines spectacular photography of China's most remote mountains, with translations of the beautiful and simple poetry of ancient buddhist hermits who once inhabited them. The book opens anywhere to reveal Steven R. Johnson's incredible photographs matched on the facing page, with Mike O'Connor's artfully rendered translations. Each photograph and each poem in this masterful collection is among the very best I have seen, but the greater joy is how - taken together - each pair of photographs and poems creates an object of profound beauty and simplicity. Where the World Does Not Follow is as unique as it is beautiful.

A lifesaver for people with back and neck pain!
Suza Francina, author, The New Yoga for People Over 50, Mayor Pro-Tem from Ojai, California, writes:

"I have been teaching yoga to people of all ages for over 25 years. One of the most common reasons people begin a yoga class is to get rid of their aches and pains. I can say with complete confidence that of all the books I've read on therapeutic exercise for back and neck pain relief, Dr. Schatz book offers by far the most effective, individualized approach to a healthy back.

Back Care Basics goes beyond generic exercises and takes into account each person's special circumstances. It is a lifesaver for people caught in the viscious cycle of pain and fear. I have referred to it countless times creating yoga based exercise programs for people in chronic pain. In fact, almost my entire copy is highlighted or underlined!

If you or someone you love is suffering from back or neck pain, I encourage you to educate yourself by reading this book. I also hope that other health professionals working with people with back problems--chiropractors, massage and physical therapists, acupuncturists, etc., will read this book and leave it in their waiting room. Chiropractors tell me that patients who are practicing yoga rarely have acute back pain and their adjustments hold longer. People with back and neck problems benefit more from other therapies if they practice the gentle yoga program taught in Back Care Basics.

Excellent Book!
I purchased this book when it was first published, and I still use it today. My first copy was so well used, I recently purchased a new copy (it would be great to have a spiral bound). I've experienced back pain for over 15 years. Doctors suggested surgery, which I declined. I've seen over a dozen chiropractors over the past decade, some seemed to help, some did not. As I do not expect any doctor to "cure" my backpain, neither do I expect this or any book to "cure" it. What I have learned from this book has helped me to help myself. I have improved my posture, greatly reduced my backpain, and have begun taking yoga classes. I'd like to thank the author for writing this very helpful book, and I look forward to any new titles that may be released by Mary Pullig Schatz in the future.

Immediate Results
I had heard lots of wonderful things about this book for the last few years. Then I bought a copy. The results have been nothing short of amazing. Dr. Schatz has compiled a book which is a must for anyone with back pain or neck pain.

Her diagnostic tests allow you to immediately identify your problem areas. The recommended exercises are clearly illustrated. You get exercises that are custom-made for your body.

Of course, the magic happens when you actually do the exercises. I saw remarkable results in my posture the very first day I started doing the exercises. The neck and shoulder tightness has also improved.

Dr. Schatz is an expert in this area, and this is not designed as "quick fix." This is a sound program to be followed over time. However, I must admit I was astounded at the speed at which I saw improvement.

If you have any back or neck pain, or poor posture, you absolutely must get this book. It will improve your health dramatically. Thank you, Dr. Schatz for this magnificent book.

Iron Lake: A Cork O'Connor Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Pocket Star (1998)
Authors: William Kent Krueger and Kruegger
Amazon base price: $23.00
Average review score:

Why am I the first to say...
...that this book is absolutely wonderful? 'Cause it is. Krueger's ability to marry true edge-of-your-seat mystery and suspense with lyrical and literary style and sensibility is outstanding. Iron Lake succeeds famously both as a tale of murder and mystery and as a rich and vivid portrait of an unusual town and it's divided citizens.

When a prominent and infamous man-about-town is found dead and a local Native American boy turns up missing, suspects, alibis, and racial tensions pile up as high as snow banks. Cork probably shouldn't get involved. The last time he stepped in the middle, people got hurt. Himself included. And now he's lost his badge and his wife and maybe his way. But whether he likes it or not, he's caught again, like his blood, like his past, half in the white man's world, half on the reservation. Now a man is dead and a boy is missing and it's snowing real hard out there. And Cork's sense of duty and justice didn't disappear with his badge.

Read this book. It's fantastic.

I wrote this about the hardcover and it still holds true.

Iron Lake
This was my first "Cork O'Connor" book and found the characters believable. An excellent read and hard to put down once you start.

Fifth Age Dramatic Adventure Game (Dragonlance, 1148)
Published in Paperback by TSR Hobbies (1996)
Authors: William W. Connors and S. Weinlein
Amazon base price: $25.00
Average review score:

Yuck.
Three words: they ruined Krynn. Dragonlance used to be the best campaign setting for D&D, but TSR discontinued the campaign setting boxed set and replaced it with a new game, separate from D&D. The game rules are okay, some interesting concepts, but unfortunately incomplete. The rules are just not completely enough explained to run a game here, so you'll have to buy a bunch of (expensive) game suppliments. Even worse, though, is that they ruined the setting. Fifth Age distorts Krynn in a number of ways, the game world is much less appealing than the old "Fourth Age". Unless you have money to burn, I say give this one a pass. If you like the idea of a card-based RPG, I suggest you check out "Castle Falkenstein".

Fifth Age setting alright, but Saga Rules System is great!!!
I bought the Dragonlance: Fifth Age not for the setting, but for the Saga Rules. Imagine TSR producing a diceless RPG, it's crazy! But it is true. The Saga Rules are very, very, very, good and very adaptable. My friend and I always liked the idea of the Shadowrun RPG, but never liked the rules (It required about 1000 d6's to play). But we converted Shadowrun to Saga Rules and it works great. If you are a fan of Dragonlance, get it, and if you are a fan of new, intelligent, and unique rules systems get the Saga Rules System.

Dragonlance Fifth Age is awesome.
What can I say about Dragonlance Fifth Age. I too was skeptical at first but when I bought it I was immediately impressed by how much simpler things were. No longer did you need oodles of dice. All you need now are a few cards, chips, and friends. The rules are simple and with the emphasis on storytelling instead of dice rolling everyone has more fun and can concentrate on the tale being told. I love this Game. The only down side I noticed is NO TASSLEHOFF.
