The best of its kind.
I have read many books about vocabulary building and I have found that this book offers you the best and clear definition of difficult words, some are not yet appeared in the dictionary.

One of the best books I've run across for an English class
This book was required for my high school english class. It demonstrates in a useful and challenging manner the errors we daily make when speaking and writing, and how to correct them. An almost perfect tool for anyone who needs to write/speak clearly, concisely, and accurately.
A Desert Island Choice
This is a great grammar reference. I have many others but if I could have only one this would be it. I wish I'd had it in school, it has served me well since 1973.
The best dang grammar and usage guide out there
This is a fabulous text, sorrowfully out of print. It's written in an approachable and entertaining style, and covers a broad range of grammar and usage issues.
It is, without question, the forerunner of the very successful "...for Dummies" series, instructing the reader painlessly and effortlessly. This small paperback was the grammar textbook of choice in Southwestern Ontario during grades twelve and thirteen, and I still use it as my default reference. Together with Strunk & White and a good solid dictionary, it's the cornerstone of the essential desk reference set.

All sorts of odd words
I got this book thinking to increase my vocabulary, but it was too advanced when I first got it. I bought an easier book on vocabulary building, then used this one. I think it's great, it has all sorts of words. My only problem with this book is that it gives a word, but doesn't provide you with how to pronounce it or how to change it from noun to verb to adjective, etc.
Informative and engaging
Picked up a reprint of this book, and it's wonderful! It's interesting, and not as pretentious as I thought it might be. Lots of words that you might've recognized but didn't know the exact definition of. Highly recommended.
Great for those who think they have a terrific vocabulary !
I bought this book for someone else and had to return to buy a copy for myself ! It is definitely for anyone who is interested in the origins of words and the games words play !

just Don't buy this book!
I bought 3 vocabulary books for study during summer. Among those 3, this book has the worst quality. the words in this book are too old (1950s) Maybe my grand father found this book was useful in that days. But not now!. And the examples and explanations are so weak that these words don't make any chunk as they insist! Moreover, this book has unreasonable higher price than other vocablary books. the paper is so low quality . And the letters are too small to percieve. You might regret if you buy this low quality book. I recommend to buy "1100 words you need to know". That was really helpful.
A solid book for serious study
I got this book while preparing to take the GRE. Their choice of words and their explanations are very good. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who does not just want to cramme the words for an exam. If you love english, you will love this book.
The bible for the virtuoso of etymology
This is the most incredibly wonderful book written on the subject of words. The approach is not like wordlists but is full of stories and anecdotes. This book is an eyeopener for the wonderful world of words.
A must for anyone interested in words at any level.

A good book for the tests above, but however, tendency to get lost, especially in the foreign words segment is pretty high.
Who cares! A good buy, excellent worth for the money spent
After reading this book, books like "Improving your Word Power", "Word Power" and "Word Power II" seem passe! Now, that is POWER!!
