MIND BLOWING! WHAT A STORY! HOT AND DEEP AND LIFE ALTERING!
THE GREATEST NOVEL! IT TRANSFORMED MY LIFE. IT TOOK ME WHERE NO MAN OR WOMAN HAS GONE BEFORE. IT STAYED WITH ME FOR MONTHS--AND IT'S WITH ME STILL. HIMILCE NOVAS IS A SUBERB NOVELIST. I THINK SHE SHOULD WIN THE NOBEL PRIZE. SHE'S LIKE A CULT FIGURE TOO. I UNDERSTAND SHE IS SOMETHING OF A RECLUSE AND DOESN'T GO FOR ALL THE AUTHOR PROPAGANDA STUFF. SHE'S THE REAL THING, BELIEVE ME. AND SO IS HER WRITING. A FRIEND OF MINE SAID HER WRITING WAS "SUBLINGUAL POETRY." I AGREE.
WOW! SEXY, FUNNY,MAGICAL ! NOVAS IS THE BEST NOVELIST EVER!
THIS IS THE BEST NOVEL I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME. IT'S MYSTERIOUS, MAGIC, SEXY, STIRRING...IT TOTALLY TRANSPORTED ME AND TOOK ME TO A ZONE I'D NEVER BEEN TO BEFORE--THE WRITING IS PURE POETRY. IT IS HUMOROUS IN WAYS THAT ARE SO TOUCHING THAT I LAUGHED AND CRIED AT THE SAME TIME. IT IS AN IMMIGRANT NOVEL ABOUT CUBAN AMERICANS, BUT IT IS REALLY A UNIVERSAL NOVEL ABOUT TWO TWINS WHO FALL INLOVE...AND THE ENDING IS UNBELIEVABLE! NO ONE CAN WRITE LIKE HIMILCE NOVAS. I REALLY THINK SHE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST AMERICAN NOVELISTS OF OUR TIME.
Great short story
This book has the feeling of raw emotion pouring out on the page. It is short and so easy to read that the book flew past me and I felt I was watching a movie. I read heavy Joycian things and mindless mainstream as well, and this book slots more into the "magical" mindless mainstream, but in a very artistic way. And to top it off, it has a happy ending, which I was not expecting. Unfortunately for the real world, there is such a thing as genetics that would eventually make their life sad were they to have kids, but that is not the point of the book, so I chose to suspend that reality while enjoying the book.

THE BEST AND MOST DELICIOUS RECIPES! WHAT A GIFT!
THIS BOOK IS A KEEPER, FOREVER AND EVER. I FELT I WAS TRAVELING THE WHOLE HEMISPHERE WITHOUT LEAVING MY BED! NOT ONLY ARE THE RECIPES DIFFERENT, IMPRESSIVE AND EASY TO PREPARE, THIS BOOK IS A TREASURE OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY ABOUT THE MANY LATINO GROUPS WITHIN OUR OWN USA BORDERS. I LEARNED CULTURE AND GOT A FEW LAUGHS AND IMMEDIATELY TRIED SOME RECIPES THAT REALLY IMPRESSED MY FAMILY. IT'S THE BEST COOKBOOK I'VE EVER HAD. IF THE AUTHORS READ THIS, I'D LIKE TO REALLY CONGRATULATE THEM FROM MY HEART!
A great resource for Latin American cookery!
This book features a wide variety of recipes from across the spectrum of Latin American cookery, including contributions by notables Celia Cruz, Cristina Saralegui and others.
Our favorites have been the "Latin from Manhattan" chicken soup, pork and rice, black bean soup, chicken fricasee *and* the Guatamelan coffee. And this Thanksgiving I will be making the wine-infused turkey! Other recipes include pasteles, chicken and beef dishes, milk shakes and desserts.
There are also interesting side articles such as "How Jamaican beef patties came to be sold in New York pizzerias" (I had always wondered about that!)
A great resource for the novice or experienced cook!

A must to have to all Selena fans!
This book is written so well. The book goes through Selena`s life and career. And it of course includes inside informations and pictures about Selena and her dear and loving husband Chris.I wish there`ll be more information and pictures about the life of the two lovebirds.Because despite the ugly and mean rumours about Selena and Chris ,i truly and deeply believe that they were very happy together and very much in love. They were planning their future very seriously,a new house and kids. She wanted to have 5 kids.
There are also very sad pictures of her funeral and her coffin. The pictures make you feel very sad and frustrated.I mean the big question in my mind was and is, WHY? Why she has to die? What was the meaning of this?
But i really think that this book is very useful and brilliant to all Selena fans out there. The pictures of the book are generally awesome and great!

Great Way To Remember Selena
"Remembering Selena" is a great way to do just what the title says-- remember the real Selena. The book is illustrated with lots of beautiful full color pictures, plus black-and-white pictures scattered throughout. The text is good, too, but if you want a real meaty Selena bio, go to Joe Nick Patoski's "Como La Flor." All in all, though, wonderful all around. :)
it was terrific!
I think it was a terrific book because it had a lot of wonderful information and great photos of selena and her family.

Gives the background of one of the most talented singers
This book gives a decent amount of information about how Jon Secada became a star, but it could have gone farther. I think it was a great idea to have the book in English and Spanish, but a little more content would be nice. The book is worth buying just for the great pictures inside.

A good intro
I acknowledge the complaints of those who do not like this book. It is by no means comprehensive, nor is it a great scholarly achievement. But it's perfect for people like me who are history-illiterate and just can't digest the dry format of most history textbooks. It has a question-and-answer format that makes it easy to learn the history in small chunks. As an Asian-American, I am glad to finally have a way to learn a little bit of my own history. I would recommend this book to those who know little about Asian-American History and want an introduction to the events and attitudes that shaped it, but not to those who are looking for something more.
EXCELLENT HISTORY BOOK! FAST AND FUNNY AN DEEP!
this book was an unexpected bonus. not only did i totally enjoy it, it was a breeze to read cause it's in funny Q & As, and when i finished it (i read it here and there, cafeteria style), i really felt like a whole door had been opened to me about asian american history and asian american life--this is an incredible and great and excellent culture. i was also able to use this book to help me with my college history courses, and even with my asian american friends when i visited with their families. two thumbs up!
A most helpful and comprehensive book
I loved the easy-to-read style of the book. Loved it so much I've begun reading other books within the series of "everything you need to know ..." I'm a history major and I've learned a lot from the book about all the various asian immigrant groups that have arrived in the U.S. I've read lots of other history books also, and although they confirm the historical events and facts I got from this book, I found that those other books are just much harder to get through. This book is intended on purpose, it's clear, to be a popular type of book and has no pretense of being some type of "major research" book. It's fun, it makes one wants to learn more about history, and so one does. I think it's really very worthwhile. I can read it on trains, in between classes even. Recommend highly.

Novas: A Culture Vulture
The book on Latino history is not bad, but it is nothing special. She has simply re-written the work of her researchers. So yes, it's a good primer, but it is rather glib (After all, Novas wrote an article about sightings of Tejano singing star Selena's ghost for The National Enquirer. That doesn't do much to boost her credibility as an historian.) Advice to knowledge seekers: this is educational junkfood. Get a textbook.
Lively, Pithy Primer on Latino History
Though this lively, pithy primer on Latino History does not quite live up to its title (that would take many volumes), Novas does offer enough history and commentary to educate and, hopefully, encourage the reader to search out more books on Latinos (her "Selected Readings" at the end of the book will help towards this latter goal). Novas correctly notes through chapter topics that Latinos are not monolithic but, rather, are made up of numerous cultures each with different dialects, foods, music, politics, history, etc. She answers such questions as what's a bracero, who was Cesar Chavez, what are mariachis, and offers interesting, straight-forward answers. As a Chicano, I learned much about other Latinos (and a little about my own culture). This is an enjoyable and educational book.
EMPOWERING! TOTAL HISTORY IN A BOTTLE! IT'S A MYTH BUSTER!
THIS BOOK TAUGHT ME MORE IN TWO HOURS THAN I LEARNED IN FOUR YEARS OF COLLEGE. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE HISTORY OF LATINOS FROM BEFORE COLUMBUS TO THE VERY PRESENT, AND IT'S DONE IN A QUESTION AND ANSWER FORMAT, AND DIVIDED BY SECTIONS UNDER THE DIFFERENT LATINO GROUPS (MEXICAN AMERICANS, PUERTO RICANS, CUBAN AMERICANS,ETC), AND THEN UNDER SUBHEADS LIKE "POLITICS" OR "THE TOP LATINOS IN THE ARTS" AND SO ON.NO GROUP IS LEFT OUT, AND THE INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION OF ZILLIONS OF COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS AND OUTRIGHT LIES ABOUT LATINOS ARE GREAT. THIS BOOK IS A MYTH BUSTER AND A REAL BREATH OF FRESH AIR. AS A LATINO, I FOUND IT VERY EMPOWERING.
