Poetry the way it should be written!!!!
I read this book when it was first released by Blue Mountain Press and was floored at Leonard Nimoy's profound grasp of language and poetic grace. I was tired of the lack of insight of the "modern poet" and the great loss of style. Poetry is not just words written on a page, where vulgarity is license- it is the essence of what we feel imparted through words, which if successful, the reader will feel, taste, and smell as the writer! Leonard Nimoy does this! He has grasped the essence of poetry, the true form of the "classics"

Wonderful Insight Into Leonard Nimoy the Man
This book is part of my poetry collection. It is a collection of poems from several of Mr. Nimoy's books. It give us a insight into the complex and wonderfully sensitive man who made his biggest mark in Hollywood by playing a half human Mr. Spock who is not suppose to have any emotions. Mr. Nimoy give us a look into the real man, the man that his words exposes to our eyes is not wearing a mask, he is real, a warm generous man with a beauty of spirit rare in those who have gained great fame. His gifts to us are these words of love, wisdom, & courage. He is truely and outstanding actor, director, writer and photographer, but I think the man inside the poems is his greatest gift to us all. This book would make a wonderful addition to anyone's library.

A Truly Delightful Read
What a delight to read. There was so much emotion and strength in this book that it has been a treasured (and much read) addition to my library. It is one book that has appeal to both non-Trekers and Trekers alike. The message is so universal. The inspiration held within these pages is incredible. Much like the messages within Consillium and other works of Mr. Nimoy's, it is a guide to overcoming many of the the innumerable tests in life. A must read! Very uplifting!

Beautiful touching poems
Leonard Nimoy is an honest man, of deep feeling. You can read touching poems in this book by this warm-hearted actor. You can see that love is a very important thing in his life and he takes it seriously. I recommend everybody this poetry book with all my heart.

Spock does not rock as a love jock.
You all may love Mr. Nimoy and his performances as the unforgettable Spock on the original television series Star Trek, but there is no way you're going to be able to read this entire book of poetry...

without getting a cramp in your side from laughing so hard.

This is by far the worst love poetry I've ever encountered, made doubly so by it's lovable author. Enjoy!

A Superb Collection
FOUR SCIENCE FICTION CLASSICS is an exceptional compilation of the absolute best the genre had to offer in the 1940s and 1950s. It is composed of six powerful stories which transcend the decades in which they were written, stirring the heart and mind as powerfully now as when they were first published.

While these stories would shine under any conditions, the narrations of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy actually serve to further energize the prose. I was especially moved by the performance of William Shatner. Despite having been a fan of Star Trek for decades, I was completely unprepared for the depth and the brilliance of his vocal talents. Shatner's clear insight into the stories and their characters radiates with every word and intonation.

I could not more strongly recommend either an audio book or a science fiction collection.

Interesting combination
I only wanted "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" and it did come separate on tape and even on vinyl at one time. It did not hurt to get the rest of the tapes. Foundation: The Psychohistorians is what the Foundation trilogy is all about and the newer foundation books you can read the separate reviews. The Martian Chronicles is ok but I do not want to spend time reviewing this section, as better reviews will be under the book description.

However Mimsy is a different animal. So I will say something about this. It is a small sci-fi story about a formula that allows you into an alternate universe that everyone used to have access to. The problem with getting there is that it requires a different paradigm and a formula. The paradigm requires a mindset that diapers as we get older and the formula is in front of us if we know where to look. An added plus is that it is read to us enthusiastically by William Shatner

Sensitive Poetry
If you've avoided reading Nimoy's poetry, give this little book a try. It is surprisingly sensitive and tender. Written in free verse, it nevertheless is a masterpiece of modern poetry.

An excellent novelization.
If you are familiar with the movie that this book was based on, I will say that this is one of the most faithful novelizations of a movie that I've ever seen; almost every scene from the movie is included, and most of the dialogue is faithfully kept as well. Ms. McIntyre satisfies her creative urge by filling in gaps in the storyline, adding internal dialogue and insight into the characters' thoughts as well as transitional scenes that further explain and clarify the storyline.

If you are not familiar with the movie, there are a few quibbles you might have with the story, but for my money, the quibbles are all things that originated in the movie, and that Ms. McIntyre is not responsible for: the running gag of Kirk attempting to "fit in" to 20th century society by cursing, which he does clumsily, and Spock's even more clumsy attempts to follow Kirk's lead. I'm not certain whether this was supposed to be purely a humorous bit, or whether it was supposed to be a comment on how silly vulgarity makes one look, and how foolish it is to try to fit in in that way. If it was intended for humor value, its humor wore thin very quickly, and if it was intended for the latter purpose, I'm not sure that it was effective. But in any case, that, as I say, is not Ms. McIntyre's fault; it was part of the movie that she was working from. Similarly, any part of the plot that referred back to the previous movie, and Spock's tenuous grip on his memories as a result of being recently "reborn", do not sit well with me (see my review of "The Search For Spock" for my objections to that movie/book) but again, this is not the author's fault. I also do not believe that a bit of ambient radiation causes malfunctions in phasers, as happens in one scene, but the same disclaimer of responsibility applies.

On its own merits, and outside of the consideration of how well it remains faithful either to the movie it was based on, or the Star Trek universe in general, or the previously established characters, this book is still quite good, and better able to stand on its own as a Science Fiction Action-Adventure novel than most Star Trek books, and it also does a better job of faithfully portraying the known characters than many. And as I said, it does a marvellous job of faithfully depicting the story from the movie while building on it plausibly and believably. All in all, by almost any measure I care to use, it is a very good book.

FUnny
I liked it because it really helped to put the movie into prospective.

A real action filled, Sci-Fi Story
I believe that this story was the best that the Series of star trek books has. Great ending and begining. I especially enjoyed the time travel that goes into this. A very good book.

Enjoyable Book
I enjoyed this book, but I am having a difficult time deciding how much. It certainly was one of the more interesting and truthful ones, as far as autobiographical information goes. It was not however, one of my favorites, as far the Star Trek Alumni Biographies go. George Takei's and Walter Koenig's take the top two spots there. Her battle for sobriety was forthright and made for good reading. I don't buy her claims to have had visions from God, however (alhtough I do beleive that SHE believes them). Where that affects the overall "rating" for the book, I guess you will have to decide for yourself. The book was a worthwhile read overall.

A moving and inspiring book
I am a long time Star Trek fan who bought this book because I have had the honor of meeting Ms. Whitney at a couple of conventions, and she has impressed me with her warmth and wit. I read this book in a single sitting because I could not put it down. Unlike the other Trek memoirs I've read, this one focuses not on a TV series, but on the incredible story of a woman's fight to find peace with God and herself. This book is a must read for anyone who has ever experienced tragedy, loss of self esteem, or addiction. The one thing that concerns me most is that I feel too many people will look on this as just another Star Trek book when its audience should be far greater than just Trek fans. The author has bared her soul in an attempt to help others, and the courage that must have taken is awe-inspiring. Bravo, Grace Lee!

Fascinating and Inspiring
I was very impressed by this memoir. Grace Lee Whitney went through some terrible ordeals in her life and her account of how she eventually recovered from them and found spiritual peace as a Jewish Christian, while somewhat unorthodox for me to fully comprehend at first, ranks as one of the most inspiring accounts I've read this past year. Probably what impressed me most however, was her willingness to challenge the late Gene Roddenberry's long-standing diatribes against religion and faith in general by using herself as an example of what happens to one who decides its better to reject God in the name of doing one's own thing and thinking it's somehow "liberating" when ultimately it leads to the worst consequences imaginable.

An excellent story.
This is by far the best of the numbered series of Star Trek novels up to the point at which it was written, with the possible exception of #7, "The Wrath Of Khan". The characters are handled competently, the plot is interesting, and the writing is fluent, professional, and lively.

There is a certain similarity between the plot of this story, and the plot of "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", but that is no fault of this story, since it predates the other. There is also a certain similarity between its plot and that of "Dr. Strangelove", although this is not a comedy. This story is set in the time immediately after the original series Star Trek episode, "Tomorrow Is Yesterday"; the computer has not yet been reprogrammed, and is still overly affectionate toward Kirk.

If you enjoy Star Trek: the original series, you should definitely read this book; it is one of the better books in the Star Trek series. Even if you aren't a big fan, but are only lukewarm toward Star Trek, you should give this book a try.

One of the first Trek novels I ever owned, and still good.
A plague of epidemic proportions has struck the Romulan Empire, the only cure for which can be found in Federation space. The Enterprise intercepts a Romulan vessel trying to cross the Neutral Zone, and after a brief but fierce battle, Kirk learns of the plague. But the Enterprise's main computer has fallen in love with him, severely crippling the ship and cutting off all communications from Starfleet. Now Kirk must negotiate to get the vaccine to the Romulans before the Federation declares war, at the whim of the head of Starfleet intelligence who has hated the Romulans throughout his entire career.

Look for the computer to call Kirk "dear", and many other pet names throughout the course of the book. Plenty of well-known and loved "Trek" guest stars make appearances: Ensign Garrovick, Yeoman Janice Rand, Mr. Kyle, among others. "Web of the Romulans" is a truly great piece of classic Trek fiction.

A pleasing and lively adaption
Forget for the moment the established theory that the center of the Earth is a ball of fire, and enjoy this wonderful adventure written over a century ago that offered an alternative view. I'm a big fan of Journey To The Center Of The Earth. I've read the book and seen the movie countless times, and still never tire of it. Alien Voices attempts to tell the story in a way that would suit a modern audience, while still retaining the spirit of the original. Long, descriptive passages can be circumvented in the aural medium with a few lines of dialogue or sound effects, and tighten the pace. Projecting the fascination of the unknown and portraying science in a highly positive way is indeed very Verne, and in this Alien Voices get it exactly right. Leonard Nimoy is an unsurpassably brilliant actor who brings the crotchety and irascible Professor Lidenbrock to life with panache. This is one man whose voice is perfectly suited to audio. John DeLancie unfortunately overdoes his part way too much for my liking, being too soppy and emotive as Axel. Still, that's the way Axel was written, so I can't say he got it wrong! The acting all round is competant, though it's mostly Nimoy and DeLancie who we hear, and they are seasoned professionals in film and t.v anyway. Put this on the headphones, and the sound quality becomes most evident, and you'll soon be taken away into the past. A worthy interpretation, for the most part, certainly to be congratulated for being far truer to the novel than the nonetheless highly enjoyable 1959 film.

Enduring science fiction classic
Reading this book is an amazing adventure, as evidenced by a century of avid readers. I picked it up on a lark and decided to read the first five or ten pages to see if it was my type. It was easy to read, enjoy and visualize, and I quickly finished it.

The story revolves around a young man and his uncle, who is a scientist. They discover a route to the center of the earth (hence the title), and the novel is about their journey. Once you get 100 pages into this book, you aren't able to stop. The things they find boggle the mind, but seem so real.

100 years from now, people will still be enjoying Jules Verne, because he captures the imagination of the young explorer.

Excellent Adventure
So, what is so special about going to the center of the earth. Its fun and its a possibility!

'A Journey to the Center of the Earth', is a narration by Axel who takes a trip to the center of the earth with his uncle, a famous mineralogist. They start their journey from a mountain in Iceland and end up.....

Although, this idea is impossible(?) but the author has given such proofs that while reading the book, you actually start thinking that just may be it is possible. And come to think of it, there is yet another world miles under our feet!

The story is narrated in very simple way with very few scientific details and terminologies used unlike '20,000 leagues under the sea' by the same author, where he used so many of complex marine terms that a person not familiar with them get frustrated.

A good adventure book just like rest from Jules Verne. Stronly recommended to those who have taste for such adventures like going to the earth's center or going around the world in 80 days (with no air travel).

I get this sense of deja'vu
If you have have been a fan of Star Trek and Mr. Nimoy in particular and have read his previous autobiographical outing "I Am Not Spock" you will be sorely disappointed with this latest venture. I was stunned to see entire passages and many anecdotes lifted almost verbatim from the previous work with very little original material added. I have to applaud Mr. Nimoy on his commitment to recycling; a good 80% of his material has appeared not only in his previous book but in just about every interview and article he has done. For someone just now getting acquainted with Mr. Nimoy and the Trek phenomenon, all this would be new and fascinating but for the long time devotee eagerly awaiting the publishing of a "new" book....short changed is the term that comes to mind.

Also, for a biography, there is very little personal material. I can understand not wanting to hang your dirty laundry out for the world to see. But since the publication of his first book, Mr. Nimoy has divorced, remarried, lost two parents, had a bout with alcoholism, worked under the direction of his son for an Outer Limits episode...these are the peaks and valleys that make up fully lived lives and amazing emotional journeys that grips a reader. We share none of this with Nimoy. He even casually omits his first wife's name from the identical anecdotes he rehashes.

In many ways, he truly is Spock in eschewing the emotional and human. Stick with the tried and true "behind the scenes" tidbits despite having worn them very thin from repeated use and hope the novice reader finds them "fascinating."

Enjoyable, Funny, Touching, Lasting Star Trek Legacy
I have been a "trekkie" for years but then, I don't have the privilege of attending a Star Trek Convention as there's none of such a thing in New Zealand. The only way that I'm able to know more about the character Spock and the person behind the mask, Leonard Nimoy is through reading a book. It's even better when the book is written by Leonard himself. Obviously, as Leonard penned this book this time around, he has made peace with Spock. No more "I Am Not Spock". The book explained that his life & Spock's life is intertwined. Nowadays, he's gratified rather than showed resentment towards Spock for the success that "they" are embracing together. The book brought us behind the scenes of the making of the original TV series, the movies till the first endorsement of the New Generations. It also touched upon other projects that Leonard undertook such as "Three Men & A Baby", & other theatre projects. Leonard also reviewed the process of deriving the best ears for Spock, the origin of Spock's phrase Live Long & Prosper & the famous V sign via Leonard's heritage, the firming up of scripts that bonded the characters of Star Trek together, his relationships with Gene Roddenberry, the hit & miss involvements with Kirstie Alley & Eddie Murphy! Wow, I didn't know that. This is a book for avid Star Trek fans & for those readers who want to catch a glimpse of a dedicated actor being faithful to his character even if it meant losing his own job.

Not Dr. Spock
It's always fun to read books by the cast of Star Trek. Each actor brings such a unique perspective to Gene Roddenberry's creation. And Leonard Nimoy proves to be no exception to this rule. Mr. Nimoy spends a considerable portion of the book sharing interesting insights on the character of Mr. Spock. From the early days of Spock (in The Cage) to his appearances on Star Trek, The Next Generation, we see how Mr. Spock (at Mr. Nimoy's urging) gradually grows to integrate and accept his Vulcan and Human heritage. And this strangely parallels Mr. Nimoy's own acceptance of the blending of his character with himself. This book also proves interesting since it discusses other projects that Mr. Nimoy has taken on. For instance, did you know that Mr. Nimoy's directing credentials include 'Three Men and a Baby' and 'The Good Mother'? Overall, this book was well written and entertaining. Pick it up and add it to your Star Trek collection

Logic versus omnipotence... and the winner is...
Ever since my initiation into the realm of Trekkie-dom, I've found Spock and Q to be among the most fascinating (doh!) characters to emerge from the Star Trek mythos. Even before this recording ever came out, I'd ofttimes wondered how these two individuals would match up in a battle of wits. But once I heard that two certain 'Trek actors started up an audio drama production company a few years back, I figured it was only logical (doh!) for them to eventually produce a little audio venture involving their Star Trek alter-egos. And sure enough...

Alien Voices Productions co-creators Leonard Nimoy and John DeLancie once again jump into the roles that have made them pop-culture legends, and have a go at the logic-versus-emotionalism debate in classic radio drama style, with the fate of humanity at stake. Spock has traveled back in time to warn his listeners (this production was recorded in front of a studio audience) about an impending asteroid collision, but Q makes efforts to prevent this intervention, going so far as using the Prime Directive of non-interference that Spock's Federation so reveres. Then there's the main event-Spock attempting to convince a seemingly indifferent Q to take action to prevent the catastrophe.

Although the two take many verbal pot shots at each other over the course of the hour-- with Spock using his dry Vulcan logic and Q with his smug sarcasm-- the many retorts and barbs exchanged are more lighthearted than mean-spirited. Despite their positions on the issues, both opponents seem to have a certain degree of respect and even affection for each other. And despite the desperate nature of the situation, the tone of this little standoff is more "all in good fun" than it is grim.

Although I felt that DeLancie's portrayal of Q was pretty much dead-on (though at times a bit too dramatic), I found some fault with Nimoy's Spock reprisal. He seemed a bit too emotional at times, and his moments of sarcasm were quite a bit more biting and a lot less reserved, especially when compared to his classic verbal bouts with Dr. McCoy. But despite Spock being somewhat out of character, I rather enjoyed this legendary war of wills. I found its many moments of lighthearted comedy and pitched battles of ideas to make for a very relaxing and thought-provoking hour.

Spock VS Q! Logic VS Chaos! Who's on First? An Asteroid!
Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie reprise their roles of Spock and Q in this very well written and comical audio performance that has been presented to appreciative fans at Star Trek Conventions around the world.

Did you like the Spock VS Bones spats in Classic Star Trek, then you will love Spock VS Q on Audio! What an outlandishly funny take off of the odd couple. Spock is at the logical end of the continuum and Q is at the emotional end. Who will win the battle of the minds? The survival of the puny humans on Earth lies in the balance as the asteroid nears Earth.

It made me laugh so hard I couldn't see straight. You will love it! Verbal insults fly profusely. Will Spock out-maneuver the clever and devilish Q in a verbal joust? Spock is really good at games, remember 3D Chess. Will he be able to outwit the all powerful Q? Will Q get an autograph from Spock for his collection, or will he have to stand in a long line like the rest of us? Will Q learn the Vulcan mind meld technique from Spock? Will the asteroids destroy the puny humans on Earth? Well buy the tape or CD and find out. Buy it and play it over and over. I hear new stuff every time I play mine. Don't delay buy your own copy of "Spock VS Q" on audio tape or CD today!

StarTrek: Spock vs. Q. an Alien Voices Production
I have just bought this tape and have listened to it about three(3x)times already, and think it is wonderful to quote "Q" or is that Mr.Q?. This is very good and very funny well worth having, I have seen the Alien Voices crew on The SciFi Ch. and would love to see this battle of wits on SciFi, just to see John DeLance's performance as Q as jousts with Spock. This program having been recorded before a Live Audiance helps to make this performance hilarious to say the least ,Both actors are in rare form as thier respective caracters as the engage in a verbal battle of wits (Intelectual vs."Nitwit,Nimcompoop" as in you are). If like Spock and Q get this book in either form(Tape or CD)it's worth it to listen to Spock run rings around Q so to speak. This text refers to the Audio Cassette version.
