As close as we'll ever get to a Lennon Autobiography
Actually I have the original version of this book, The Playboy Interviews, but since I'm an avid collector of "all things Lennon" I'll probably buy this newer version as well. But man! What a great read this book is! I learned so much about John here in his own words. Do people remember when he was shot, and the current issue of Playboy had just come out with the John & Yoko interview? Man, I clutched that thing like a bible in those sad sad days of December 1980. That interview turned out to be just a portion of the whole interview, and now that is published in this book. A cautionary note: reading this book can re-awaken your love and feelings for John and the Beatles, and this can lead to some pretty serious melancholia. Twenty-plus years later! I still ponder the what-ifs of it all, if John had been allowed to live - for instance, how would that Beatles Anthology thing on Tee Vee had been with a living John? And would there have ever been a Beatles reunion? ( I doubt it.) Not to mention how the politics of the Reagan-80s if John had been there to help out! Anyway, buy this book. It is still very valid and even timeless in its depth and scope.

essential reading
This book is basically a re-issue of 'The Playboy Interviews With John Lennon & Yoko Ono - The Final Testament" (Berkley Books, New York, 1982, ISBN 0-425-05989-8) with a new preface. It contains the last interviews with John & Yoko conducted in September 1980 (first published in the December 1980 issue of Playboy) and is absolutely essential reading for any Beatles fan.
The interviews stand out for their honesty and frankness and provide (among other things) a very good insight into John's views of The Beatles. The part where John discusses almost every released Beatles' song is a joy to read and read again.
Of course John's relation with Yoko also gets ample exposure.
If this book is still missing from your collection, get it now!

Primary source
John Lennon gave two interviews in particular that were extraordinary for their length, depth, and honesty. One was his famous "Lennon Remembers" interviews with Rolling Stone in 1970, and the other was this one, shortly before his death in 1980. Lennon was a complex man, and it is interesting to compare his attitudes among the two milestone interviews. Yet this one (conducted over several days) stands alone for its insights into Lennon's personal life, his relationship with Yoko, his philosophising, and his song-by-song discussion of his work, both with the Beatles and afterwards. It offers an unprecedented glimpse into his mindset and outlook at the time of his death, filled with the usual engaging Lennon wit and wisdom. Lennon comes across not just as a vital source of information about his own life and career but as an interesting conversationalist, period. We are also treated to Sheff's brief glimpses of Lennon and Ono at work on their "Double Fantasy" album. This book is an important document for anyone interested in the man or his music.

Informative Book
This book is perfect for beginners and those that already now the basics and want to advance further. It has many examples and is written in a intelligent manor. If you are advanced in VRML you may still benefit from this book however when it comes to scripting and adding Java to your 3d worlds you will need to invest in other books.

Great Book!
Doesn't take you through the subject in the conventional manner. After the first couple of intro chapters, you can then easily delve into any other chapter for what you need. Very useful as a reference once you understand the basics. A bit weak on using scripts to control and interact with VRML worlds. Other than this minor gripe, a great book.

The Children Are Free: Reexamining the Biblical Evidence on Same-sex Relationships

Masterpiece
Setting aside its few inconclusive arguments, the book is one of the best summaries of current scholarship I've ever read.

Romans 1: The authors should have included a lot more information, particularly Jordan's phrase for phrase analysis and Townsley's work on parallelism. Despite these absences, the book does present a fairly clear interpretation of Romans 1 (heterosexuals engaging in gay sex during worship rituals to their god/dess)

Genesis 19: I think there are a few more points that the authors should have given in order to further their case, but despite this they shattered the notion that Sodom was punished for gay sex, or that any of their sins included such.

Leviticus 18-20: Authors conclude temple prostitution was prohibited, not general gay sex---Miner's work as a lawyer certainly helped him objectively view the context, but he and Connoley both leave out many powerful points that would have made their case so much stronger.

Cor. 6/Tim 1.: Although, as in other discussions, they leave out a few details that would further their case, the authors' presentation here is fantastic!---a fascinating, thoroughly review of translation methods that anyone unfamiliar with translation would benefit from reading.

In chapter Two, the authors go over the verses they believe to support gay relationships. Their analysis of David and Jonathan's relationship is very interesting, but not fully convincing. Their discussion of Ruth and Naomi is very speculative and the authors should have known better. Their discussion of the Eunuch literature was very convincing to me, as was their discussion of Jesus' encounter with a gay man, in which he implicitly blessed a gay relationship. So we have at least two Bible passages---both of which are from Jesus' own words---that are gay affirming.

Easy to read explanation of Biblical texts
This book presents in a very easy to understand and readable way a very accurate interpretation of the Biblical texts regarding homosexuality. Even its use of Greek words is not intimidating and they explain them clearly. They also present texts that are pro-homosexuality that are provocative and enlightening. This is a rare gift that this book brings to this topic. Many books in this area are very scholarly and difficult to read. Miner, et al, makes the interpretations clear for any average reader. You do not have to be a Biblical scholar or a linguist. Their presentation is done in a very readable way and does not condemn those who may disagree. It invites them to keep an open mind. For those who may have been bashed by Biblical texts on homosexuality, this book can bring a new vision and understanding into the value of Christian faith. It definitely is intended for those of a Christian background or understanding. For those who are interested in the Biblical questions and passages, this book is a valuable one to have in your library or to share with friends or family who have questions and are searching.

Different from the other books
Many books have argued that the Bible does not condemn same-sex relationships. In the vast majority of cases, however, the arguments sound like loopholes and excuses, not a sincere reading of Holy Scripture. (Sadly, this includes even the ever-popular "What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality.")

This book is remarkably different! The authors don't make excuses or water down the text; instead, they take the Bible seriously and treat it respectfully, allowing the Bible itself to provide the best evidence for their case. Meanwhile, this book is so short, simple, and easy to read that anyone can benefit from it.

"The Children Are Free" is chock full of anecdotes and examples, making it a delight to read, even for people who don't normally read about the Bible. Those of us more familiar with the subject will appreciate the clarity of the authors' argument.

Other, similar books made me think, "Yeah, I guess I can see that," but this one left me wondering, "How could you come to any other conclusion?"

To Sleep with the Angles the story of fire
My family grew up in this neighborhood. My uncle's father was registering his son for school on the day of the fire. He was catching students who were jumping from the burning building. We lost family friends in this fire. I am a public school teacher. I don't know what I would do if I ever lost a student in a fire. Because of this event, fire prevention week, fire drills, smoke detectors, and other fire awareness is in exisistence. This book brings home the importance of what fire can do, due to ignorance. It is a book of science, spirituality, education, sociology, and history. It is a well researched and well written book. A must read for anyone who finds these areas important.

You Are There
This book was well written and it recreated the horror of this famous 1958 Chicago fire. I liked the "you were there" feel the authors created by following the events as they unfolded, through the eyes and voices of the survivors and witnesses. I am surprised a book like this didn't come out before 1996. I was in my second year of high school when this occured and it really was a major event that people not connected to the fire talked about for quite some time. Maybe a majority of the participants just wanted to put this behind them. The authors really put together a clear story of what happened on that day. You could feel yourself inside some of the burning classrooms. I am surprised at how quickly the authorities became apathetic about all the death and suffering. I was facinated to read about the judge who went against the evidence and didn't bring charges against the prime suspect. I highly recommend this book for those interested in a rather dark day in Chicago and elementary school history.

A Fire Chief Comments................
For some unknown reason I keep being drawn back to this book and a related book that is out of print. The out of print book is " The Fire That Will Not Die" by Michelle Mc Bride. Ms. Mc Bride was a fire victim suffereing severe burns. Her account of that horror is as prolific as the accounts of this book. I read the book many years ago and then found it again while a student at the National Fire Academy. Again I could not put it down nor could I for this book. I was a student in a Catholic grade school just several hours north in Wisconsin in 1958 and yet vividly remember praying for those students when the news was made known in school the following Monday. No wire services or CNN back then. I also "survived" two school fires in my own parish school just a few years after the 1958 Our Lady of Angels Fire. We were out of our building, similar in construction, for several weeks each time. I don't understand the connection but after secondary school years and college I was drawn back to my interest in the fire service and became a volunteer firefighter, then career firefighter, and then Fire Chief in Wisconsin. I now serve as Fire Chief in the WI bordering community of Menominee, MI. I had the chance to get near the Chicago tradgedy site this past winter during a hockey tournament but could not find the site nor the cemetary mentioned and shown in this book. MAybe sometime in the future.......... As a fire chief people need to be aware that there are still many school buildings in many small communities that could yet suffer the fate of the "Our Lady of Angels" fire. Many school buildings do not require sprinklers systems. These fire protection devices certainly would've made a difference in Chicago. The fire sprinkler technology was readily available with a successful history of "saves" over the past 100 years! Enjoy the book! Pray for the children, their parents and the scarred survivors. Their lives were changed forever by the euphemism of hell , FIRE. If anyone has a copy of the Michelle McBride book please advise if you want to part with it. Ted J. What to Read?
My friends and I are always recommending books to each other. We pull out our notebooks and PDAs and scribble down authors and titles. This sharing is an integral part of our friendships. When I open and browse in 100 One-Nightight Reads, I feel as if I have been talking to a good friend - and want to scribble down notes to myself.

This collection of essays recommending books that one can happily read in one night - is so much more than an annotated bibliography! David and John Major are sharing their own personal recommendations with us all. They are offering an intimate tour of the books that have mattered to them. Each essay has an individual approach and when you read it, you feel as if you have had a conversation with the author.

Sometimes I am reminded of old friends - books such as Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart that had a profound influence on my thinking when I read it twenty years ago; sometimes I am delighted to find a new book that I didn't know about - such as Louis Begley's Wartime Lies that must go on The List. Then it's nice to remember old favorites such as Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep. One of the things I like about this book is that this is not a list of classic books that 'ought' to be read - its much more personal than that - broader in range - and much more fun. As I was reading, I found myself saying "Oh yes, I remember reading that,"- or "I must reread that!" - or "I must remember that one!"

Each essay elicits a specific response and this review would be too long if I wrote down all my comments. But the collection gives pleasure - a persuasive collection, that makes readers want to read more and might encourage those who don't read as much to pick up a book.

I think that teachers and librarians who offer guidance to young people would enjoy this book and find it useful.

The Students Perspective
100 One Night Reads is a fantastic piece of reference work. Virtually all the books I've read and written on for school over the past two years has been recommended by the Majors.
100 One Nights lets me find books that I know I will like, and that are universally excepted by teachers everywhere as being sophisticated literature. I haven't gone wrong once. Every book I've chosen from 100 One Nights has been well worth my time, and great material for the ensuing report. I've even started reading some of their suggested books just for the hell of it.

GREAT FOR BOOK CLUBS AND LITERATURE LOVERS ALIKE
How many times have you stood examining a book in a store or library, and wished for more information about the story or the author? Or how often have you presented a book to your reading group to persuade them to select your pick, but couldn't say much about it beyond "I heard this was great?" Now with John and David Major as your passionate and intelligent guides to 100 wonderful books, you can make that informed choice. For each selection, you get their succinct and witty descriptions, which are enjoyable before and after you read the book. If you love to read, I highly recommend that you buy this book. You will use it a lot, and never regret it.

Four sides of a circle.
David E. Scheim's fascinating research into the assassination of JFK makes for one of the most compelling publications ever. Far & away one of the best books about that day in Dallas;
Scheim dissects mafia involvement in Dealy Plaza,Texas,22.11.63. Not as much suggestive as masterfully investigated, there is stuff here that will blow you away; such as Lee Harvey Oswald's vastly covered-up significant ties to the Mafia~(Oswald's mob connected uncle "Charles Murret"). There's also a fantastic chapter dealing with Mafia associations to R.Nixon's Administration & to R.Reagan's Administration. And check out the "Appendix#2 Sources-on-the-Mafia" section; Seems that the Cosa Nostra has been networking an evil business empire ranging from Wall Street connections to an interest in child pornography.

An intriguing, powerful paperback. Check it out.

My Dad said this is the closest to the truth he saw
He's passed on now but when he handed me the book almost 20 years ago he said "This is almost dead on." And for reasons I won't elaborate on he knew some of those who knew those who carried this out. That coupled with the thorough research of the author gave me chills then and chills now. Who lost the most from Bay of Pigs? The crime bosses. Havana was well on its way to becoming the drug/sex/gambling playhouse of the New World, and only 90 miles from our shores! What a deal, with [people] like Batista in their pocket, they had a perfect plan. My Dad went to Havana twice pre-Castro to meet with his "friends". Keep in mind that part of the deal was the compliant Cubans at the top of the food chain, most of whom came here after Castro, which is why they get no sympathy from me. No matter how bad Castro has ever been, he's better than Batista who was a criminal and a traitor to his people, but they never mention that. If you're ever in a conversation with a Cuban without a gun, ask him to tell you what life was like for most Cubans before Fidel. It usually stops the conversation.

Excellent investigation.
This book covers one of the essential aspects of the murder of President Kennedy: the Mafia and his executioner Jack Ruby.
It is a thorough investigation: David E. Scheim went as far as analyzing all telephone calls by Ruby before the assassination.

The author gives us a most credible explanation of how the Mafia could benefit and did after the murder. More, he draws a disturbing portrait of how the Mafia penetrated the highest power ranks in the U.S. and how it could influence the life of every U.S. citizen.
He castigates the Warren Report as a shameful misjudgment.

This book is a must read. It describes how a secret organization could wield enormous power and influence to its own adavantage a whole democratic nation and its citizens.

The Death Of Grass
This is one of the few books that having read at school I have returned to read numerous times. It is a fiction about a world surving, or not, against a virus which attacks all grasses. The determination by the party of people we follow while reading the book is ruthless, yet understandable. The book really draws you in and is difficult to put down. There have been times when I have been able to liken this novel to real life, for example when the United Kingdom faced Foot and Mouth recently, and when we had the Petrol Crisis. At times like this I think back to the book and wonder, could it turn out like that? Anyone who has read the book will agree, lets hope not.

Death of Grass, a good read :)
Well, This book is one of a few books that you can't put down, it moves well, never stalls and should be put on to a reading list for schools.

Biodomination - HARVESTED EVIL
Vast modernisation is already underway, aided by mans increasing desire for new technology. A biotechnology company is about to proceed with something of unspeakable horror.

Cross-contaimination and the swift death of ALL forms of vegetation on an international scale lead to global starvation.

Love for nature and love alone hold no place in society now. These ruthless biotech companies exploit the general public and fade away when the smoke hits the fan.

The scorched skies are a grim reminder of the naplam dropped before them in a bid to save mankind from the death of grass.

Not a puppet making manual
This book is entertaining and well written, both for adults and children. Contains some great tips on how to make eyes, noses, hair etc. for puppets and how to animate the finished products. However, if you are looking for a book on how to make muppet-style puppets or stuffed animal style puppets, this is not the one. Most of the puppets described in the book are 'wooden spoon' or sock puppets - cute, nice for kid's projects but not professional looking. To its credit, this book does contain lots of ideas and insights which could make it a good accompanying book to some other more definitive puppet making book.

fabulous ideas
This book has so many great ideas using many easy to find objects. It even includes a little packet with 2 pairs of eyes, some faux fur, a few feathers and other sundries. The day this book arrived, my daughter and I made 3 puppets. In the next several days we made many more out of socks, oven mitts and other things that were just laying around the house. If you hate to throw things away, you'll love this. After reading the book, you'll start looking at your trash with new eyes. Old paper towel rolls, band-aid tins, fabric scraps, plastic spoons, small plastic bottles you might throw out, sponges, pot scrubbers, erasers--all these things can be transformed into puppets.

My only quibble is that the suggested reading level is ages 4-8. My nearly five-year-old can't do these projects alone, (I also use a hot glue gun, so it's too hot for her) so I've ended up letting her direct what goes where on the puppets. I think a six year-old working with less dangerous adhesives could do many of the projects himself, and I think kids even older than the age range would find the projects fun, especially if they have little siblings or an opportunity to teach younger kids. (Like helping out at Sunday school).

The book is full of projects that are easy to do right away, don't cost much money or require special trips to the craft store and let your child develop her imagination/creativity/emotional skills.

Make whimsical puppets with this magical book
This book could be the catalyst for your puppet-making creativity. A combination of great ideas, whimsical details, colorful photos, and real Muppet stories is as inspirational as it is fun to read. Adults and children alike will enjoy the projects in this book, including my personal favorite: the fuzzy garbage-can puppet (you step on its foot and its mouth opens).

If you've ever marvelled at the great puppets used by the Muppeteers, this book is for you. It will get you started on the road to finding your inner Muppet and creating some fun friends on the way.

The reality of recovery ministry
The story of how David Wilkerson came to found Teen Challenge should be a must read for anyone who follows Jesus Christ. The Cross and the Switchblade describes how Wilkerson put feet on his faith that took him from rural Pennsylvania to the streets of New York City. It's the story of how a pastor followed the leading of the Holy Spirit and reached out to minister to people with whom the churches would not associate.

Wilkerson describes in his book how essential it is to meet the unloved where they are, rather than waiting for them to show up in church all dressed up and ready to worship within the ranks of the clean and respectable. He also rightly emphasizes the importance of follow up, how one can't just expect to go out and distribute tracts or preach from street corners without also developing real, loving relationships with people and ministering to their needs, both spiritually and physically.

Now that Teen Challenge International has grown to over 200 centers around the world, it is interesting to note that the struggle in recovery ministry continues to be much the same: It's extremely difficult to get people to reach out in love to those who have never been loved, and it's nearly impossible to get church members to venture outside their doors to love their neighbors as they love themselves.

I praise God for Rev. Wilkerson and the way that he listened to God and ventured out in faith. I thank him for sharing the story of his work.

Blew me away
A powerful book that will send God-bumps down your spine! Even if you are not a fan of David Wilkerson's later writings, this book is truly a God send. Read this book if you want to learn of the power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of others.

Six stars at least
What a tremendous message this book has to give. Miracles happen right in the worst parts of New York, away from the glamourous bits, right in the middle of the hard, the tough, the smelly and the nasty - and it actually keeps on happening.

These days, so much has changed. A local pentecostal preacher once told me that he went to Leeds one Saturday; that he was so disgusted by the beggars, and used to see the same ones all the time, how awful that they should always be there; and once he got real close up to one, who was (from what he told me) probably very weak, maybe even dying, lying on the ground, got about six inches away from their ear, and shouted at the top of his voice, "GET A JOB!!!"

Stand this in contrast with the Wilkerson man. This guy, realizing that the zonkos and beggars know that they're sinners, possibly scarcely realizing anything else at all, goes and gives them a bed for the night - feeds them - gives them a bath and warm clothes. The tells them that God knows them and has already fixed up a plan for them - that to the God who made the sun and the outer planets, THEY matter - "whosoever will" can come and drink from the waters of life, that they can repent, and be made blameless before the king of kings.

[Life isn't cheap to this man.]

Then the guy fixes up this organisation called "teen challenge", held together by almost no money at all, but lots of prayer, who pulls loads of dropouts and folks who are very nearly dead from all over the place and stands them on the the higher ground...

Man, this book is so good. I know that these days, many of the big churches... (I used to be in Perth, Western Australia) and there was this huge church near to the Casino. The car park was full of BMWs, and all the evidence was that the church was really inwards looking, far too concerned with "signs and wonders" to remember about the plan of Salvation at all. So much for the lost, no place for them. When I went to Yorkshire, I was amazed how the church had similarly split along these lines - those who preached the gospel, the same one as David Wilkerson preached - to the lost sheep - (go and READ this, will you) and those who prayed for (and maybe got) bigger houses, fatter share options, sports cars, foreign holidays, etc. The contrast is huge.

Read this book and find out what the cost of discipleship to Christ really means - how many days and nights of prayer it really takes to move those mountains - and what faith is REALLY about. And the failures, when Sonny does not come back, and all the disappointments when it doesn't seem to go to plan and they're just about to get kicked out of the building...

I was brought up with this book, and as far as I can remember, I have worn out probably six copies. Time I got myself a new one....

EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about this thrilling epic
I remember ordering this book, about a year ago, through the mail and just couldn't wait until it arrived. I've proudly made "Gladiator" a part of my DVD collection and have seen it many times since. Once I got this book I was not in the least disappointed with it. In it was absolutely everything and more I ever wanted to know about this spectacular movie. This book has it all! MANY photos, some history, costume design, about the cast, some drawings by Sylvain Despretz(storyboard artist), the making of "Gladiator", and more. I just couldn't get enough of this book. If you're crazy about the movie as I am then buying this book is highly recommended! "Gladiator" has a great book, great soundtrack, and SPECTACULAR film! ~Did You Know all the armor was made out of foam covered with leather?

Gladiator, The Making of the Ridley Scott Epic
A visually stunning book, which portrays the movie 'Gladiator' in detail. Lots of photo's from the movie that were not part of the media blitz that promoted the movie in magazines and other publications. The book is well written using interviews from the filmmakers as well as actors. The best aspect of this book are the full page color photographs, production drawings as well as costume sketches and architectural drawings of the sets used. Overall a great book for the 'Gladiator' fan.

An epic book from an epic film
Presuming that prospective buyers of this book probably saw the movie, this book will not disappoint you. The movie was epic in scope, and although some historical inaccuracies existed, they did not detract at all from the movie, nor the performances of Russell Crowe, Connie Nielsen, Joachim Phoenix, and Richard Harris.

If you like to know the 'nuts and bolts' behind the making of a movie such as this, this is your book. If you are curious how they managed to 'reconstruct' the Coliseum complete with gladiator 'fans', this is your book.

A great gift for Gladiator and Russell Crowe fans alike.

Commodus was in fact Marcus Aurelius' son and the downfall of Rome, while already in progress, hastened when Commodus was made Caesar.

Enjoy! And watch the movie again.
