Simply terrific!...
This book not only covers Dragon NaturallySpeaking software but also offers several tips and examples on efficient speech recognition. The material is presented in such interesting fashion that makes this book fun to read. If you own Dragon NaturallySpeaking software, this book is a must to have.

Great help for both new and old Dragon NS Users
This is a really helpful book. I would prefer to read and Dan Newman's book than all the technical stuff in the Dragon manual, because it is so much more user-friendly. I have been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking since it came out in 1995. There is so much to know, and so much you can forget!! By reading this book, I am remembering some very useful tips, and learning some new ones. I would recommend this book to anyone using NaturallySpeaking.

For Authors not Typists
I used Dragon to first-draft Writing Nonfiction: Turning Thoughts Into Books. I was so impressed with the system, I included a chapter on using speech recognition to dictate a how-to book. Then I found Dan Newman's book. I recognized a number of things I had learned and found a whole lot more. Newman made the Dragon even more fun.

If you write a lot and are not an accurate, rapid typist, get speech recognition software. If you are fast and correct, keep on keyboarding. Dragon is good but you will have to make corrections. If you already make mistakes, it does not matter if you talk or type.

Dan Newman takes you step-by-step through using Dragon Naturally Speaking. (For coverage, click on Table of Contents in the left-hand column of this page.) He even includes trouble-shooting tips and resources.

Dan Newman is a great writer, gifted computer expert and a dedicated teacher.

As the author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has to write a lot. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

Excellent, comprhensive, birth to grave guidebook for women
As a physician who takes care of many female patients, I have been delighted with the practical and accurate information provided in this book. I am routinely recommending it to all of my patients and have purchased copies of it for my own family members. This is a must read for any woman who is concerned about her health and well being. I give this one 5 stars without hesitation.

Top review from the Library Journal.
From Library Journal: Obstetricians/gynecologists in private practice, Newman and Stevens have collaborated with five other physician specialists to produce this book on women's health. Written in a clear and conversational style, it explains how women can maintain good physical and mental health through life. The first part, which focuses on gynecological health from adolescence to menopause, treats topics like dating, marriage, motherhood, weight control, sexually transmitted diseases (STD), cancer prevention, menopause, and incontinence, with a balanced emphasis on clinical and psychological issues. Part 2, on obstetrics, guides women from the pre-pregnancy test through the three trimesters to labor and delivery. Additional resources are listed after each chapter, with recommended books, organizations, and Internet sites all included. Aiming to better educate women and give them the confidence to manage changes and stresses, this guide is a useful supplement to such women's health classics as Our Bodies, Ourselves. For larger public libraries and hospital patient education collections.Lily Liu, Arkansas Children's Hosp. Lib., Little Rock

A really helpful resource!
This book provides a wealth of helpful information in a format that's really reader-friendly. Its topics are relevant to women in every stage of life. With so much mis-information out there, it's great to have a resource you can trust!

Still timely, complete, and helpful
I completely agree with the other review - this book covers an amazing scope of material related to voice dictation software and hardware. The author draws on a vast amount of real-world experience implementing voice recognition software. And the book provides accurate and insightful guidance on what path to take if you try to set up voice recognition software yourself. The range of advice runs from informed, candid and critical evaluation of the major software programs, to what kind of wear-and-tear to expect on your vocal chords as you begin to replace typing with voice dictation! Nobody should evaluate a move to voice recognition technology, or purchase software or hardware without this book. While the book has been in print a couple years, I found it quite timely - with still valid characterizations of the various software options available. A "must" for the bookshelf of every office and organization. And certainly a critical resource for those responsible for implementing voice recognition software.

Essential reading for any potential user
I'm technologically experienced yet I have hesitated to try to set up voice recognition, even though a complimentary copy of VR software sits in my drawer. That's over. So far, this book has answered every question I have and has given me confidence that this technology can do what I want. I have three favorite "aspects" of the book --- 1) it is a stunningly clear presentation of the material. The language is jargon-free and brief, and best of all the book is laid out in in question-and-answer format, which works perfectly for this kind of material. 2) The book is populated with quotes from and descriptions of the experiences of real users, which make the advice come to life. 3) The breadth of the book is surprisingly broad, ranging from "should you / how to" topics (of course) to things I didn't expect, such as how to change the order of various tasks to take advantage of the technology, and how to continually improve the performance of the package (your system plus your own speech) over time. There's not much fluff.

So, I'm very impressed. This kind of book, executed this well, should be available for far more products than just VR.

Long-awaited and compelling
Large-format and sturdy, lavishly illustrated and with illuminating prose, this book covers the 2001-2 Dia Arts Center show which was utterly mesmerizing. If you are unaware of Jensen, google him while waiting for this book to arrive...one of the most fascinating, and certainly most original artists ever.

You Cannot Go Wrong With This Anthology!!!
With stories like "Ferryman" (Eric Brown), "The White Stuff" (Peter F. Hamilton & Graham Joyce), and "A Night on Bare Mountain" (Graham Charnock), anthologies don't get any better than this. My only quibble is with the experimental narrative "Thirteen Views of a Cardboard City"(William Gibson) which rounds out the volume with a whimper, not a bang. Otherwise, this is Hugo & Nebula territory.

Believe it or not, an ENJOYABLE textbook!
Simply excellent. Although it's a college textbook, it's easy to read and enjoyable. I found myself nearly finished with the book before the semester was half over! As Newman intended, the book has a relaxed tone and all of the chapters are tied together with a consistent theme. I now understand sociological theories and ideas--phenomena that I never thought were relevant to everyday life.

The Fifties
Published in Audio Cassette by Random House (Audio) (1993)
Authors: David Halberstam and Edwin Newman
Amazon base price: $22.50
Used price: $12.95
Average review score:

Engrossing story about a misunderstood decade
Halberstam is at his best in this volume, which is chocked full of famous and "not so famous" stories and anecdotes of the 50's. Beginning with the development of the H-bomb and our cold war fears, Halberstam guides the reader through a fascinating voyage that covers political, social, and economic history. With topics ranging from the development of McDonalds, television, Korea, Eisenhower, the beginnings of feminism, the beats, and so much more, this book opens eyes as to what the 50's were truly like. I highly recommend this book to all who want to look beyond the nostalgia and get to what really happened in what some have called the most interesting decade of the 20th century.

This is a stunning book - comprehensive and thoughtful yet extremely readable
The scope of this book could turn readers away -- Beaver Cleaver to Elvis, John Foster Dulles to Betty Friedan, Rosa Parks to Ray Kroc, Jack Kerouac to Gary Powers. What keeps it from being daunting -- and it is daunting not just in scope, but in size (700+ pages)-- is its eminently readable style. Halberstam writes with a journalist's eye for what is critical and important, and his writing is precise and focused. This is, believe it or not, great beach reading. The chapters are never more than 15 pages long, he sprinkles the themes throughout -- a chapter here and another chapter there. And his scope is fascinating: music, politics, civil rights, war, McDonalds/GM/other industry, feminism, beat poets, advertising and the rise of things to spend your disposable income on. The last 400 pages zip by like reading Elmore Leonard. As one born after the decade (in 1961), I learned a fantastic amount that explains a lot of what I grew up with. My advice: go out, go out NOW, and buy a copy. I finished this and bought 4, to give to friends and to my dad who actually lived through the 50s and was piqued by the book. READ THIS BOOK

Stunningly comprehensive portrait of America in the 1950s
This is a delightful and encyclopedic survey of the major events and personalities in the United States in the 1950s. The title is, therefore, a bit of a misnomer. The book is not about the decade on a global scale, but merely the fifties in America. Halberstam writes of the decade in a clear, fast-moving prose, and despite the books enormous bulk, is actually a remarkably fast read.

Halberstam offers no explicit themes or theses, but if there is an overarching implicit theme, it is the Fifties not as a time of innocence as frequently assumed, but a time of viciousness, meanness, and loss of whatever remaining innocence American might possess. Indeed, the book ends with Eisenhower looking at Nixon and Kennedy, and exclaiming that he didn't like either of them.

What THE FIFTIES primarily does is hold up a mirror to the fifties, and reflects the major events and especially the major figures of the decade. In fact, while specific events do receive attention, the book is essentially a succession of character sketches, and even the major events themselves are discussed through focusing on particular individuals. What is amazing is what a satisfactory job Halberstam does of writing about both unfamiliar and famous individuals.

By and large, Halberstam deals with just about every major figure one would expect. If I had any complaints--and these would be minor--I would argue that some major art forms received almost no attention in the book. For instance, while he has a full chapter on the bestseller PEYTON PLACE and writes about pulp master Micky Spillane, there is no discussion of any major writers. Nor does he write about cinema in general (though James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Marilyn Monroe receive attention), or changes in art. Elvis Presley and Sam Phillips receive a chapter, but surprisingly little about the development of rock and roll is mentioned apart from that. I think there are two reasons for this. First, even though the text runs to around 730 excluding notes and index, a book of this scale can't deal with everything. Second, despite the books enormous scope, Halberstam isn't determined to write about every aspect of the fifties, but only on every aspect that was distinctive of the decade and made it unique in comparison to what came before and that led to what would come after. Implicit throughout the book is the question, "What made this decade unique and different?"

By the end of the book, the reader will have read about Truman, Ike, Korea, Matt Ridgway, McCarthy, Elia Kazan, Orville Faubus, Holiday Inn, MacDonald's, Little Rock, Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott, the Kinsey report, the development of the Pill, Tennessee Williams, the Dulles brothers, Robert Taft, Adlai Stevenson, Jack Kerouac and the Beats, Oppenheimer and Teller and the Super, Hoover, MacArthur, Giap, Charles Van Doren and Herb Stempel, the CIA, Levittown, Francis Gary Powers, Werner von Braun, Kelly Johnson, Martin Luther King, Emmitt Till, John Chancellor, Harry Ashmore, Lucy, Milton Berle, and a vast host of other major and minor figures.

I recommend this book as strongly as possible both for those who either lived through the decade or through the wake of the decade, or those who no little or nothing about it. At the end of the book, I was convinced that the Fifties was perhaps one of the two or three key decades of the century, and perhaps the decade in which the world we know now, dominated by TV, mass communication, fast food, sexuality, celebrity, massive military expenditures, computers, advertising, and technology, was born.
