The truth about Guliani
It's a relief that a book like this has been released. Newfield paints the truth about Guliani and is quite fair. Everything discussed in the book is based on fact and shows that Guliani, in reality, was nothing but a sub-par mayor who screwed New York City in numerous ways. Newfield admits that there is no denying that Guliani did a great job after the attacks on Sept. 11 - but that does not necessarily mean that all should be forgotten for his poor work as a mayor from the years before. Want to know the real Guliani? Read this book. You'll be amazed by the truth, whether Guliani wants you to hear it or not.

The Truth about Rudy
For everyone who thinks Rudolph Giuliani is a hero and the savior of New York City, they should read Newfield's book. It objectively tells the ugly truth about this deeply flawed man.

A terrific brief journey through recent history
Jack Newfield, who wrote for the Village Voice for many many years, is one of the last of the great muckraking journaLists. They have been replaces by tabloid tv journalism, which is another story. This book takes on one of the recent myths of the new century, that of "americas mayor" Rudolph Guliani. Newfield straight away calls him a"c+ mayor",which is actually rather objective.Chapter by chapter,he brings up the screwy foibles of the Guliani years{his refusal to meet with any minority politicains,to gather votes for a compromise, outside of herman Badillo cost him control of the Board of Ed and led to cuts in education and no contract for the teachers for over 2 years}His bullying of anyone who didnt agree with him is well documented.Newfield acknowledges the great job that Guliani did for theose terribel two weeks in september of 2001,but states, convincingly that the work of his adminstartion must be judged from "september 10 and before" also. Mr Guliani has presedential aspirations, but his hubris and temper will be his undoing. this book shows how.And why. First rate!

a little bit boring
this biography begins in 1964,and it's the most boing part of his life. He only speeks of the elections and not about the man.
It sometimes very boring, but there is a lot of information about bob.

A first class perspective to RFK's last campaign.
A good, well written book; however, it is written like a journalist and not as a historians perspective, meaning it short and at times not cumbersome enough. However, for one who just wants to casually read about the events immediatly preceding Kennedy's death than this book would be a first choice.

THE EVOLUTION OF ROBERT KENNEDY
Jack Newfield held a unique position in that he had ready access to the late Senator and was privy to the latter's personal insights.

Newfield does an excellent job of analyzing the character, work and insights of Robert Kennedy. To his credit, he treats the late Senator with respect and presents an objective, yet sympathetic portrayal of the man who would be President [in 1968].

Newfield takes a middle ground approach in describing the late Senator; he does not whitewash the Senator's shortcomings nor does he put him on a pedastal. Through Newfield's eyes and voice it is easy to feel as though a full image of Robert Kennedy has been captured as opposed to fleeting ones. His professional/political career is closely followed; his extreme determination have led many to describe him as ruthless. Indeed, there appears to be some truth to that statement. In viewing the then future Attorney General's dogged pursuit, interrogation and prosecution of Teamsters and Mafiosi, it is all too easy to draw that conclusion. By 1964 and a Senator, the same qualities that had gotten him branded as "ruthless" were viewed by many in a more tolerant light; many supporters viewed him as driven, dogged, determined and very committed to his visions. Civil Rights and supporting the disenfranchised endeared him to many. Sadly, this man has been compared to and eclipsed by his brother, the late President Kennedy in many works. As Attorney General during the [John] Kennedy Adminnistration, Robert Kennedy worked behind the scenes, often promoting his brother.

By 1964 Robert Kennedy had literally come into his own and in finding his voice, became the voice of many. He was a changing, growing, developing person. He appeared to keep an open mind and be receptive to knowledge. The former hawk of the 1950s would become a dove within a decade. The man who admitted that he never stayed awake nights worrying about minorities became a very strong advocate for minorities. He was a very complex and interesting person and it is a grave disservice to him to portray him entirely in one type of light. Newfield is one author who does an excellent job of discussing his subject objectively. In reading this work as with so many on Robert Kennedy, one can never help wondering what he would have accomplished had he lived to be elected president in 1968.

Read, met key subjects of book and it's near accurate.
I read the book, it was lent to me by one of the key players in the book "Stan F." and I was able to met two of the subjects in the book . I found it to be a very accurate accounting of the events that took place. Well worth reading. Depending upon the price I'd purchase it to have in my library.

great movie from the book
don't miss the movie made from the book, "Don King, Only in America", beatifully directed and edited, great dialogues, hard to believe they found an actor that can mimic Don King, an actor himself. Good to see this fictionalized movie, alog with the documentary "When We Were Kings" to compare how the scenes of really happened scenarios were recreated

Don is Something else
Don King is a Cat that knows how to Spit out Game both in&out of the Ring.no matter who comes along nobody is gonna outlast Don King.this Book tackles all the things that the HBO movie went over.you see a Guy who would not be denied. His Famous Words Only in America fit Him to a Letter T.He is Witty,Sharp,Hustler&Always on His Game no matter what He is getting down with.

Great Man Adequate Book
You just can't ruin a book written about a man as inspiring as Don King. White America likes a succsessful blackman only if he succeeded its way. By this I mean the classic way through a college education and a white liberal view on greed. The conclusion one must draw from the life story of Don King (this version or any other) is that Don King is a thinker not a follower an euntreprenuer not a wage-earner and a succsessful man despite overwhelming odds.

Hackneyed and Boring
Newfield has to be one of the most humorless journalists who ever wrote about the 60's. He calls this an upbeat memoir but I found it a downer. It's a lot of self congratulation with same old cliches and no real thoughtfulness. The world has changed and passed Newfield by. It's all been done before and far better too. Spare yourself.

Wonderful and moving!
This is a very evocative and entertaining autobiography that vividly recreats newfield's childhood and coming of age as a working class radical journalist and student activist in the 60s. Newfield seemed to know everyone who was anyone in the 60s and was was closely involved in the creation of SDS. Newfield also provides us great stories about the four things he loves most and writes about best: baseball, boxing, jazz and -- of course -- New York CIty. A lovely book, full of Runyonesque character.
