Listening for the Heartbeat of God: A Celtic Spirituality

A wonderful little gem
A very informative book. Dr. Newell gives a lovely overview of Celtic Christianity. I especially loved the notion of Celtic concentration on St. John because he was believed to be listening to the heartbeat of God. The collection of prayers in the book gives a clear glimpse at what the Celtic Church was before Western Church domination. I read the book with a mixture of dismay at the loss of many Celtic traditions, and joy at having the opportunity to see some traditions that survived. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring a deeper relationship with God.

Hearing and Seeing God everywhere
This excellent little book makes a good first foray into the subject of Celtic spirituality. It does this taking a generally chronological approach, giving insights about Celtic spirituality through consideration of several individuals and literary works. It begins with Pelagius, who presented a different view of the world than his contemporary Augustine of Hippo, who first articulated the spirituality that so many are rediscovering today. Then comes John Scotus Eriugena, born in the early ninth century, whom the author characterizes as possibly the greatest teacher ever produced by the Celtic branch of the church, but who none the less influenced the entire church. Then he looks at the Carmina Gaedelica, the collection of Celtic prayers and songs from the highlands and islands of Scotland in the nineteenth century. The next two chapters look at the work of George MacDonald and George MacLeod. Finally, he looks at "Two Ways of Listening: John and Peter," in which he presents a way of reconciling the two sundered traditions of European spirituality. Celtic Spirituality is a vast and deep topic, but this is an excellent introduction anyone can understand and enjoy.

This a great book on the subject of Celtic Christianity.
This is simply a well written book on Celtic Christanity. I enjoyed reading it.

Handy daily morning and evening prayers, liturgical style
This is a beautiful prayer book of morning and evening personal liturgy based on Monday through Saturday. It includes a lectionary of psalms and readings for each day of the church year. A wonderful prayer book to use in your daily prayers. I'm giving one to each of the kids in my youth group who are going on pilgrimage to Iona. I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to structure their prayer life.

A beautiful book but for what need?
This is a beautiful book - the "coffee table" style of prayer book in which the art is as important as the prayers. This style works best as books to dip into in times of special need. This book, however, is structured as morning and evening prayer for a week. Morning and evening prayer share the same structure: a single verse of psalm, silent meditation on a sentence, an opening prayer in a Celtic style, two short Scriptural verses for meditation or lectio divina, a prayer of thanksgiving and intercession, a topical sentence of meditation and a closing prayer.

J. Philip Newell has done a splendid job of selecting and organizing his material. However, the material is too slight to constitute material for a retreat - and would quickly become too repetitive if used as a continuous prayer pattern. The result is a wonderful book for which I can think of no situation for which I would recommend it. What a pity.

Great devotional tool. Helps me focus on the goodness of God
I've been using Newell's little book as guide for my prayer time. It has been wonderful for keeping my mind and spirit focused upon the glory of God.

Wonderfully illustrated throughout with colored panels
Celtic Benediction is a lavishly illustrated book of daily prayers drawn from the great spiritual insights and wisdom of the Celtic Christian church. These are timeless prayers and Scripture readings for every morning and evening the week, any time of the year. Celtic Benediction invites Christians to mediate on a different aspect of the creation story from Genesis. This superb compendium compiled by J. Philip Newell, a parish priest and warden of spirituality in the Diocese of Portsmouth, is wonderfully illustrated throughout with colored panels from the Lindisfarne Gospels and will be a treasured and valued addition to any personal, church, or seminary library.

The Book of Creation: An Introduction to Celtic Spirituality (Rhythm of Life (New York, N.Y.).)

Seeing God in His creation
J. Philip Newell is a minister in the Church of Scotland, poet, scholar, and teacher. In this slim but rich volume Newell introduces the reader to Celtic by guiding her or him on a journey through the seven days of creation. The Celtic spiritual tradition looks not only to the Bible for inspiration, but to Creation itself. He begins with an introduction that places the Celtic church and tradition in the context of the wider church, both Catholic and Protestant. Each of the succeeding seven chapters takes its point of departure from each of the seven days of creation, through the themes of light, wildness, fecundity, harmony, creaturiness, image, and stillness. After a discussion of how the Celtic spiritual tradition treats each of these themes, the chapter ends with an exercise of meditation based on centering prayer. The sources for this spiritual gem come from the Bible and the works of Celtic Christians from Pelagius and Eriugena through George MacDonald, with a host of other works thrown in, including materials from the Carmina Gadelica. This wonderful little book is great for study and for prayer.

Ground Water Contamination: Transport and Remediation
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall PTR (14 March, 1994)
Authors: Philip B. Bedient, Hanadi S. Rifai, and Charles J. Newell

It works for me
I teach a graduate course in groundwater contaminant transport each year, and I have used several texts in the last 15 years. The latest edition of Bedient et al. is the best current overall reference for this course. Few texts mention characterization and remediation at the same level of detail, and this text has the most complete presentation of analytical transport solutions with problems that demonstrate their use. In my course I stress application of computer modeling tools (which I must provide separately), but this text provides a fine foundation to my students' physical and chemical understanding of the available models.

I switched from our own text to this more current version
I teach a course at the University of Oklahoma on the topic of this text. Actually, colleagues and I published a now outdated text on the same subject in the early 90s. I compared this text with other available texts and selected it to replace our own volume. While not perfect (what textbook is) I found this revised edition to be a valuable introduction to the subject. I liked the way it covers not only the fundamental processes governing fate and transport but also has sections discussing the applied aspects of the subject (remediation, characterization, etc.). The authors have taken great effort to make sure the updated version is very current -- I can especially speak to this in the specific areas of my research. Admittedly, I did supplement the text in certain areas, but I do this with every class I teach (and did it with our own text). And different professors supplement on different topics in keeping with their personal interests. Based on my experience with the text, and feedback from students, I definitely plan to use it again.

Use of Book for Litigation Support
My firm provides litigation support services to attorneys. We found Dr. Bedient's book to be very useful both as a reference and as a means of educating our clients who typically have limited technical capabilities in the area of groundwater hydrology. The book covers a variety of topics, all in sufficient detail, I believe. It is well written and organized, for easy reference. If the authors write a sequel, I suggest additional case studies that discuss some of the environmental "mysteries" out there!
