Last year when my daughter was in kindergarten, she would check out an old, worn out copy of this book over and over again from the library at her school. I was surprised that with all the new, fancy, colorful books availabe, she kept going back to this one. Now she is in first grade and lo and behold, she's bringing it home again. On a whim I thought I'd check Amazon and see if it's available to buy, not thinking it would still be in print. I am so excited that it's for sale! I bought it and can't wait to present my little girl with her very own NEW Marshmallow book!

Although my children are now grown, "Marshmallow" was their favorite book. We almost wore the library copy out and we later named our sweet white bunny, Marshmallow. The artwork is beautiful and engaging as well as the story line. So glad it will be re-published soon!! A "must buy" for my grandchildren.

My mother read this story to me when I was little, in the late fifties. She gave the book away to a young mother in need, but I never forgot it. When I became pregnant, I was so happy to find Marshmallow in the local library that I actually (talk about hormones!)took it out to read to my baby in utero. Many borrowings later, I bought the edition offered by Scholastic books, but was unhappy with the tinting of the illustrations. That copy went to the second-hand store when my daughter's father helped her clean her room last year. Now I am determined to find a hard-cover copy FOR MYSELF. I will share it with the kids in Sunday school, though. I think the message is truly appropriate for our times.

Due to having a "one cat" apartment, after BABETTE had been completed, my mother took Babette to live with her own parents in Flint, MI. As Clare told the story, "At first, my rather taciturn father regarded Babette with skepticism and said','She looks like a weasel! Of course, my mother loved Babette. However, Babette had made up her mind to win Dad and followed him around,looking up at him as if to say 'You great big wonderful man!'

In a few days, I noticed Daddy edging over on his chair to make room for Babette. Before I'd left he'd get up in the middle of the night to make sure she was covered in her basket. I've just had a letter saying that he now takes her walking on a leash, and doesn't care a whoop what the neighbors think of that!"

Both Babette and Mittens spent their retirement years living with my grandparents in their cozy little house. I am glad BABETTE is newly printed--even if it is listed as "out of print," it is brand-new.

I first read this over 30 years ago when I was six. It made me want a siamese cat. I have lived with a succession of them from age 16 onwards. The illustrations are still with me now. hurry up and reprint it, I'm sure Im not the only onewaiting to buy it.

I first became familiar with Clare Newberry's books a couple of years ago when a lady came into the Barnes & Noble store where I work looking for 'Babette,' which was read to her as a little girl (at least some 40 years prior). At that time, the book was still out of print, but for some reason, this lady's request stuck in my mind.

I was very excited when I saw that 'Babette' and other Newberry titles had been reissued and were on display in our store. I love cats, and the charcoal illustrations in these books are simply precious (I have made my coworkers sick, gushing over them as I do!). I figure any book that someone will actively seek out after 40 or more years is a bona fide gem. I have since collected all of Newberry's cat books (Smudge, Mittens, April's Kittens...). Young cat & kitten lovers will especially prize these beautiful books!

I recently discovered the author Clare Turlay Newberry and am thrilled and excited about her work. Herbert the Lion is a delightful story about a little girl and her lion and all of the obstacles that they go through. At first I was worried that the illustrations would not grasp my kindergarten students' attention because of it's lightness. Was I WRONG! They absolutely loved the illustrations and story line and I lost count of how many times we reread this book, as well as other books by Newberry. You must read this book and other books by Newberry.

As a child, my Mother really longed for a pet lion and when she grew up she wrote this children's story about a little girl whose wish for a lion comes true. The original book and illustrations have been faithfully copied by Smithmark Publishers as part of their series, CLARE NEWBERRY CLASSICS..

My Mother's most famous classic, MITTENS, has been re-issued keeping all the original illustrations and hand-set type. Even fellow artists were amazed that all the illustrations were done Japanese style on wet paper in a matter of moments, without any corrections. This technique gives the "furry" quality and also allowed my Mom to finish the watercolor before the kitties jumped on her lap. Mittens was a real family kitten and my brother, Steven, and our Grandmother Daisy all appear in the book, as well as all the different kinds of cats that add to the plot.

The book is simple and straightforward. A cute little story about a cat with fantastic illustrations. Great great book for a baby present. All the parents love it! The cat lovers in particular can use this book to spread the word about kitties. Buy more than one to keep on hand.

This children's book about a little girl and her kittens living in a small apartment in a big city was a 1940 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., the runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustration in a book for children. Children love to have the story read to them of how this young child has to decide which of three kittens to keep.

This is very first book that I checked out of the school library. The fact that I could remember it so vividly testifies to the fact that I really loved it. I recently purchased for my own daughter. It is a wonderful story.

This book is a very cute book for cat lovers. This book is a about this girl who lives in a small apartment with her mom, dad and her cat. One day her cat has kittens and she wants to keep them but her dad says no. Can the girl keep her cat and kittens?

I learned to read at age three (in 1958!) from this very book, and I've never forgotten it. Widget is a curious kitten who disregards his mama's admonition to "stay in the box" and climbs over the cardboard walls to have a series of increasingly frightening (though not too frightening for young children) adventures, until finally his mama finds him and takes him back home. It's a story of growing up for those who still know that going back to Mama's arms is the best ending of all.

Widget is a story about your average kitten: very curious. Widget is goes on several small "adventures" in the story, such as trying to find out if teddy bears are really fierce creatures. The pictures in the story are mostly black and white, but are very soft and aesthetically pleasing. Widget is a great book for any person that loves cats and the way kittens love to be mischievous. Every child that I have read the story to has fallen in love with Widget. The text is funny, but not too complex for a child to understand. The pictures bring out the best parts of the text. The ending is heartwarming, where, after a long day of exploring and leaving mom's side, Widget climbs in next to her and purrs, because he is happy to be home.

this book i would like to suggest to you7nger kids around 38 because it does not use too big of words, and it will capture a kids heart.

This book is indeed aimed at younger children...but it is a true classic and the sweet illustrations are still appealing to children of all ages. Recommended.
