Best Book
This book is the best book about Baby Face Nelson, I enjoyed reading this book greatly. Everything you wanted to know about Lester Gillis is in this book. Every part of his life was explained in great detail; the authors did not leave anything out. I highly recommend this book to people who are into the depression era gangsters.

awesome
this is the only book you need if you want to know about Baby Face Nelson. I can't say enough good things about this book. I only hope the authors will pen another book about Dillinger.

What A Way to Live
The era of the depression desperado was a very short lived one, but the authors do a great job researching the life of Lester Gillis, aka Baby Face Nelson. Partners in crime such as John Dillinger, Homer Van Meter, Pretty Boy Floyd, and others are included in this book close to 400 pages long. Don't let the length keep you from reading it, because I believe you will find it hard to put down. I especially enjoyed the lengthy section devoted to the fiasco at the Little Bohemia lodge near Rhinelander, Wisconsin, in which federal agents staged a shootout with gangsters. Gillis (Nelson) was responsible for killing one of the agents while another agent killed an innocent person staying at the lodge he thought was a gangster. In any event, the bad guys escaped and lived to fight another day. The price these men paid for their violent lifestyle showed in the tension they constantly lived under as they covered their tracks to avoid detection from the law. At times they wistfully envied the simpler lifestyles of the common man who had an everyday job. I'm not that familiar with the suburbs north of Chicago, but I was confused when the author mentioned that Niles Center is now Wilmette in the picture section of the book, and then on page 361 Niles Center is referred to now as Skokie. Was Niles Center part of both suburbs? This is a well researched book and easy to read. Make sure you have a good amount of time when you sit down to read it, because you are not going to want to put it down. I highly recommend this book to you.

The Classic Mother Goose Edited by Armand Eisen
We received this book as a gift for our son's first birthday, and he has loved it to death! He loved to fill in the missing words as we read to him, and quickly learned all of his nursery ryhmes. Now at age 2, he is rediscovering this treasure...he has fallen in love with the illustrations all over again, and he understands the meaning and humor in these wonderful rhymes!

This book changed my life for the better.
I got this book when I was little and now I want this book for my little girl. My favorite nursery rhyme is the one about the Crooked man. I reccommend everyone buying this book for their children.

A perfect collection of nursery rhymes.
The Classic Mother Goose is the perfect book to introduce nursery rhymes to kids of all ages. The illustrations in this book captivate the smallest children and they will choose this book over and over again as a favorite for bedtime stories. My kids read our first copy to death. That is the true test of how good a book is.

Excellent reading for anyone searching for answers in the Bi
This book is excellent reading and research material for anyone searching for solid answers to questions about how everything fits together in the Bible. It covers the different people, trades, lifestyle, geography with maps, etc. It is tabbed for fast research. My daughter said that just reading the first 20 pages explained more to her than she had ever understood about Biblical times and customs. This book is great to just read from cover to cover and then refer to as you study the Bible, both old and new testament. It enlightens the study to a more understandable text for the common person.

The best Bible encyclopedia that I've read!
This book has everything you could want from a bible encyclopedia. It focuses mainly on religion and history. It has a book by book discription of each book in the Bible. It talks about ancient cultures and civilizations. There are color markers on the upper right hand corner to help you to find what you need to find on other pages in the book. It has large lifelike pictures and illustrations. The questions and answers in the book are interesting. It is just a good all around book. I defenately would recommend this book for anybody who want to understand the background of the Bible as much as possible.

A great overview of the Bible!
I love this book. For a general overview of the Bible, this is the best! Lots of 4-color pictures and super interesting commentary. I read it cover to cover. Another great book is THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. The comments are interesting and put things into a historical setting. Many Biblical characters are pointed out who illustrate King Solomon's witty observations on human nature. Many of the riddles and mysteries of Proverbs are explored with surprising new answers.

Beats Ettinger Hands Down
That pretty much sums it up. This book is a lot more user friendly. Ettinger's is good for those in acedemia. Nelson & Couto is for those in the "real world".

Vet Students Agree
I recently consulted with a group of advanced veterinary students on which of the small animal internal medicine texts would be the most useful to me. For the record, I am an allied health professional with more background in human medicine. I looked at this text and Ettinger's, which--again!--my sources kept referring to as the bible of small animal internal medicine. Ettinger was only about $30 more than this text, and as a big two-volume set, it looked like a better deal at first glance. However, this text is FAR more user-friendly, and there were sections that I read right away out of sheer interest. Unless you are a vet student planning to make a meaningful investment in heavy books, this book is likely to meet your needs and do so in a relatively painless way.

Small Animal Internal Medicine
As a veterinary student this book has been my "bible." It has current information and is a lot more user friendly than the Ettinger texts. There are simplified charts and tables of diagnostic and therapeutic plans and differential diagnoses. The author includes other current opinions on the subject matter as well as his own. I feel this is a great reference book for veterinary professionals.

A Real Look At the Assistant Principalship
The book is well organized and well written. It presents real life stories, issues, and feelings of first-year assistant principals. The book presents the stories and quotes within a research context and utilizes triangulation of data sources for a more solid "research" basis. It is an excellent book for a real look inside the administrative offices of assistant principals.

If You're an AP, Then You Need to B(reading this)!!
The neat thing about this book is that it has tons of quotes from 1st year assistant principals. It is very easy for school administrators to mock or make fun of authors who have never been where we are; however, this book is nothing like that. The authors give the landscape and REAL AP's fill in the paint. Excellent book.

Starting with Shakespeare: Successfully Introducing Shakespeare to Children
Published in Paperback by Libraries Unlimited (2000)
Authors: Pauline Nelson and Todd Daubert
Amazon base price: $27.00
Average review score:

A superb addition to a Shakespeare reference collection.
Starting With Shakespeare: Successfully Introducing Shakespeare To Children introduces students in grades K through 5 to "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; "Macbeth"; "Hamlet"; and "Romeo and Juliet". For each play, a complete historical background, introduction to the characters, and a simple retelling of the story is provided. A variety of integrated activities extend learning to history, geography, science, art, music, movement, math, and language arts. In addition, Starting With Shakespeare is enhanced with verses for memorization, a complete script for class performance, and a list of resources for further explorations and studies. Starting With Shakespeare is a superb addition to any school literary studies and theatrical studies reference library.

not just for little kids
I am a special education teacher in a middle school and I have used this book to bring the incredible stories of Shakespeare to my students. The activities were easily modified to meet the needs of older students, and I especially enjoyed the retellings of the plays since they contained debate and discussion questions. The students I teach were highly motivated to learn Shakespeare in this interactive way. This book makes Shakespeare accessible to everyone, not just the "highly gifted." My students will never forget the year we brought Romeo and Juliet to life. Now they are able follow the story line, understand the characters, and compare the play to West Side Story in the mainstream classroom. Amazing!

Wowsa
This is a highly readable discussion of the 33 and 34 act requirements of the SEC as they apply to accountants. I think it is essential reading for any Controller/ CFO or independent accountant about to perform work for and SEC registrant or private company about to file an s1.

I find it highly readable. The CD alone is worth the price.

Fresh Water Submarines: The Manitowoc Story
Published in Paperback by Wisconsin Maritme Museum (1997)
Author: William T. Nelson
Amazon base price: $9.95
Used price: $7.97
Average review score:

Captivating story of wartime shipbuilding.
A very interesting piece of Great Lakes history.
This is the story of how a small shipyard in Manitowoc Wisconsin came to produce 28 submarines from 1942-1945. It was written by an admiral who commanded two Manitowoc submarines. After a brief history of shipbuilding in Manitowoc the author describes how submarines which had a minimum draft of 12 feet could be transported through a channel 9 feet deep by carrying the submarines in a floating dry dock. There are details of construction, sea (lake) trials and the hazards of taking the dry-docked boat down narrow stretches of the Mississippi.
There are a number of photos including the cover which shows the sideways launching of a sub. Included is a table of ships sunk in combat which totaled about 500,000 tons.
The company has evolved into making cranes, refrigeration equipment as well as shipbuilding and dry dock operations.

I was fascinated by this story. It will appeal to those with an interest in Great Lakes shipbuilding, industrial history, and the US Navy.

Captivating reading
Anyone interested in the modern view of the Jewish faith and the Jewish people must start in the past, and this book is the canonical reference. In addition, anyone who is interested in Biblical history and apologetics will be interested in the reading of this book, as well as those involved in the study of the ancient Greek language. The translator includes passages in original Greek for these readers, and as one who was learning ancient Greek at the time I read it, it was helpful to have these included in the book. It would take an established expert however to judge whether the translation of Whiston, who lived in the time of Isaac Newton, is in any sense an adequate one.

One also learns briefly of the life of Josephus, and gains an insight as to why Josephus chose to write this lengthy history of the Jewish people. What is most interesting about the reading of Josephus is his reliance on Jewish scriptures for delineating the history of the Jewish people before his time. He departs from this however when discussing the events of his own time. In addition, the reader obtains a discussion of the famous passages in Josephus on the historical authenticity of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ, these being questioned by some scholars of Josephus.

Getting the "news" from 20 centuries ago!
This is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in Palestine as it was during the intertestimental period. Himself a Jew who was taken captive by his Roman conquerors, Flavius Josephus became an accomplished historian of his day and his writings demonstrate an intimate knowledge of the Romans and Jews of his time. His writings offer insights into Jewish history, religion and customs as well as the war which ended Jewish independence for nearly two thousand years.

As with any account of history, this one bears its own biases and preferences. Begin with a personal study of Josephus and his background and what we know of the production of his historical accounts. From this starting point, however, nothing will prove more satisfying than reading the words of Josephus (in translation) for yourself! This volume begins with the historian's own autobiography and it only gets better as one continues to read.

A fine comprehensive history of Biblical times
The value of this volume is threefold, and all are noteworthy.

First, Josephus' account of the historical events and people in Judea during the 1st century A.D. has no peer. Josephus' facts are the most reliable from any secular historian during that period.

Second, Josephus' histories corroborate the Biblical accounts. Josephus, a Jewish general captured by the Romans during Judea's struggle for independence which ended in 70 A.D., mentions John the Baptist, the Herodian rulers of Judea, Pontius Pilate, and Jesus Christ. Josephus "fills in the blanks" by supplying detail not mentioned by the New Testament authors and gives flesh, bone (and blood) to the characters the Gospels and the Book of Acts relates.

Third, the translator, William Whiston, adds insightful and invaluable footnotes throughout the text. Whiston corrects Josephus where necessary or gives the reader more detail in support of Josephus' assertions by reference to other primary sources, many of which are no longer extant. Where Josephus refers to Jewish customs, Whiston explains them for the Gentile reader.

Thus, this book is best used as a reference book, though reading through Josephus' complete works is fruitful. The book is fairly compact for one containing 1000 pages. The pages are thin, which allows for its compact size, but which causes any highlighting or margin notes to "bleed" through to the reverse side of the page. The font size is 10 point, which makes for comfortable reading on the eyes. The appendices contain very helpful charts, including one which lists those excerpts from the Bible which run parallel to Josephus' chapters.

This is a great source book for any historian or Biblical scholar.
