Learning Organization books
I've too have had to read many learning organizational books for my graduate studie -- I just finished Emotionally Charged Learning by Eric Schiffer which was one of my favorites. I also like this one very much because it equally is fun to read! If I also had to train a group of people or point an organization towards achieving its goals as a learning organization, I would rely on both Emotionally Charged Learning and this book as my bible. Great writing style, great examples! Simple to read and easy to use, this up to date book is perfect for individuals and groups of people who face radical challenges through change and growth. Complement Peter Senge's insights with Peter F. Drucker's, "Management of the 21st Century" and Eric Schiffer's, "Emotionally Charged Learning" and you got an up-to-date toolkit for change and quintessential learning organizations. Why are the best books on change and learning always written by Americans? Simple, Americans get it.

Emotionally Charged Read...
Excellent book for those that are looking for something that brings into question the role emotions play in making learning really stick. I found it fascinating.

Emotionally Charged Learning
I truly loved this book. If you have studied emotional inteligence or enjoyed Senge's work on Learning then this is the next generation. Rift with detail on how to make your organization and people driven to learn faster and with more excitement and desire. I loved it.

Excellent & moving
One poem here is titled "Our Daily Losses," which might well serve as a summary of this excellent collection's theme and tone. Although the poems often display a comic edge, and are never ponderously solemn, Nelson's always got his eye on the attritions of daily life. He is especially moving as a poet of family and love, accordingly, since his gaze is both clear and honest in mixing joy with grief, melancholy with pleasure, dream with reality, fear with contentment, and so forth. Solidly crafted with vivid, precise language, his poems are accessible and thoughtful.

The complete idiot's guide to the Roman Empire

Good summary of a very extensive topic!
This is a great book to read to get an overview of Roman history, from the founding of the City, all the way up to the remnants that can still be found in modern civilizations.

I bought the book being primarily interested in the history of the early emporers; while I guess I would have liked a little more detail about them, other areas would have had to be sacrificed in order to make room.

Because of the necessary lack of detail, at times I got a little lost, especially during the discussions of the late Western Empire and early Byzantine Empire. This book at points requires a little more attention than some of the "Idiot's Guides."

All in all, I recommend it. I was a little peeved at the author's "politically correct" use of the terms "B.C.E" and "C.E." instead of "B.C." and "A.D.," but that wasn't anything I couldn't correct as I went along. ;-)

Good book, except for the typos
I just finished this book, and found it a very good read, though the effect is somewhat undone by many typos, such as unneeded or misplaced commas, misspelled or misused words ("straights" when "straits" is meant), and the occasional outright error (a couple of references to the non-existent "Year 0"). Once the reader deciphers these mistakes, though, he or she finds a generally well thought out and organized book, that covers both political and social aspects of Roman history from the founding of the city to the fall, followed by a brief section on Byzantium and the West in the middle ages. The author translates Roman writings in sidebars using colloquial English or even slang. I liked this informal approach, though others might not. He has a penchant for puns, such as Commodus wanting to rename Rome after himself, i.e. "Commodeville". I also was brought up with a start when he said at points in Roman history women had more freedoms than at any time until the last century--by which I realized he meant the 20th! The book contains several maps and photographs. Without the typos, I would have rated the book five stars.

An informative, highly entertaining overview of Ancient Rome
One can find any number of books on ancient Rome. Many of them deal only with one particular period, or with very specific aspects of ancient Rome. But Rome endured, in one form or another, for a quite staggering length of time. So much happened during that period that I've always found it hard to get a handle on Roman history--to place the isolated events and the strange-sounding names in some sort of context. Nelson's book provides a broad overview of the entire pageant of Roman history and culture from 800 B.C.E. through the fall of Constantinople in 1453 C.E. This book is *precisely* what I'd been seeking for the last couple of years. Besides being informative, it's quite a fun read. One gets a sense of the Romans not as mere historical archetypes, but as people, facing problems similar to those we face today--sometimes with exasperation, often with humor. I especially liked Juvenal's description of the joys of a traffic jam, circa 234 C.E.!

The history and culture of Rome are long and complex. This delightful book is a great roadmap for the interested reader.

Pop Culture Cliches and Age Old Truisms
This was an attempt at being clever. It provided many colorful examples of the things most urban dwellers come to realize by age 10. Packed full of common sense observations that could enlighten only the typical unaware suburban consumer.

I believe this book was an effort by the author (likely a typical suburban consumer) to share a recent personal discovery, US Econimic Policy = Careless Consumerism.

Though I am certain that the author was entertained, as clever as this book was written; with its lack meaningful insight, it makes better fiction that anything.

An engaging cultural guide to the Mall of America
This book is more than a description of the Mall of America, more than an analysis of economics or a sociological treatise. It's all of these, with excursions into history, philosophy, and theology; interviews with people both "normal" and quirky; and amusing nuggets of observation about things as diverse as superheroes and buying clothing for your wife.

For example, one chapter, "The Whirlwind," begins with quotes from Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Book of Job. It moves through our attempts to control the weather (knots tied by Shetland Island fishermen, the Weather Modification Advisory Board), and touches on both George Washington and the Donner Party, arriving finally at Minnesota weather and the reason for Malls. The chapter ends with the story of the eccentric entrepreneur behind the Rainforest Cafe: "For the time being, Steve Schussler, who studied Darwin in the school of hard knocks, has found a niche in its neon jungle."

On a trip to the Mall with Eric Nelson be prepared for unexpected encounters and surprising insights. You'll return home entertained and satisfied.

An entertaining, analytical look at the Mega-mall
It's not often that a piece of nonfiction sets me to pondering at the same time it entertains and instructs, but that's the nature of this wondrous book on Minnesota's mall of malls. Eric Nelson is a magician here, conjuring up surprises -- sparkling background tidbits connected tightly or loosely to this giant shopping community -- before our very eyes. Carefully researched, thoughtfully linked to issues important to our consumerist culture, sprinkled with astute sketches of people who spend or make their money at the mall, this book helps make sense of why this overwhelming midwestern biosphere became an overwhelming success.
