An Elric novel written by Authors who grew up reading Elric
I have read every Elric novel. I own 500 kilos of fantasy paperbacks. This book brought me as much joy, inspiration and satisfaction as any book I have ever read. Elric was the first "evil" hero. Every fantasy writer has taken a peice of elric to produce their characters. Drizt Do'urden is a shadow of Elric. Raistlen is almost an exact copy of Elric. Darth vader's sinister life, dependence on technology/sorcery and eventual noble self sacrifice are in mimicry of Elric. In this book so many authors who wanted to write Elric stories, some who had made great fame and fortune copying Moorcock, were given licence to write as they pleased. Every short story in the book is its authors best work because as they write about their own dark heros in their own novels they are thinking about Elric. My highest praise: I want a sequel.. or two... or ten... a series published monthly untill I am old and grey.

Skin tingling ,edge of your seat, can`t put it down, tragedy
Elric, last Prince of Melnibone. Elric makes you feel that your right there with him and drawing the from the dreaded runsword Stormbringer, all his pain, sorrow, grief you feel it all. This pale, weak being could be any of us, and yet it`s his weakness that gives him the strainth to weld such enormus power and to control the uncontrolable. Elric will make you cry, make you feel that you could defeat the Lords of Chaos your self and forever will you bare some of his burden. Your life will never be the same, the way you look at things such as the ocean will change and you`ll catch yourself try to summon the water element himself. For such a being to exist in your mind alone is enough.

Elric: A creation of a new genre
Elric of Melnibone' represents a departure from the era of Tarzan and Conan, giving people a dark prince for a protagonist. This book helps put together a group of stories written for the first time by other authors and show how dynamic Michael Moorcock's Elric really is.

Great Book
This novel is written very well. I didn't want to put the book down at all. If your familar with Hurricane Camille (that actually happened), then you would appreciate the well written story that goes with it. Very entertaining! Can't wait for the next one.

Storm Surge by William Neil Martin
I live in Gulfport,MS. The author has captured the realization of Hurricane Camille into depth. The book brought back memories of that night and the devastation for days afterwards. I personally was impressed on how the author mentioned local sites and locations in 1969, most of which no longer exist. Storm Surge is an exciting, fast-moving murder mystery. Outstanding book.

human nature and nature
I read a lot of books and am always looking for a new author. However, I have some trepidation when I buy a new author. This time the money was well spent. Storm Surge is an exciting, gritty book of human nature gone wild and nature gone wild. It is suspensful and riveting. The author knows police procedure and well describes the result of a hurry-cane. I highly recomend this book and am looking forward to more.

Nice introduction
This is a great book for a well-rounded general knowledge of dinosaurs. The only down part is that we still do not know much about dinosaurs and are improving our knowledge every day; since this book is relatively old, some things have changed in our view of dinosaurs today. I have documented the few inaccuracies, and hope that the publishers will issue a 2nd revised edition of this awesome book. At the time it was published, it was the most up-to-date compact book of its kind, a real break-through. If you want to have a good idea of what the dinosaurs were all about, then this is the book for you. It is so complete that it covers the facts that you would learn in an undergraduate 100-level course on dinosaurs. For those of you who are interested, the following are some of the things that have changed in the 2001 view of dinosaurs:

1) The Tyrannosaurs are now viewed as more closely related to the Raptors (Dromaeosaurids) instead of the Allosaurs (or Carnosaurs).

2) Its is now known that many therapods had feathers (other than the Aves), including Tyrannosaurs, a fact that was omitted from the book.

3) Oviraptors are no longer believed to be 'egg stealers' as the embryos found inside the eggs were determined to be of the same species.

4) In the extinction explanations section, they mentioned that the Dinosaurs died out gradually. However there is a phenomenon known as the Signor-Lipps effect that states that a sudden extinction can resemble a gradual one due to the fact that evidence and fossils are so scarce (because rarer species have lower sampling rates). This means that we still do not know if their death was gradual or quick. They also mentioned that a volcano was a possible cause. Volcanic activity would have been one of the side-effects of an impact, others being acid rain, tsunamis, and tornadoes. However the two leading theories are now the Alvarez theory (Asteroid impact which leads to a quick wiping out of a species) and the more gradual extinction via ecological change (retreating seas and climate change due to tectonic plate movement), which they failed to mention. It should be noted that the Alvarez theory is more widely accepted than the other.

5) The Classification chart is, as they correctly stated, continually changing and is now different from the one printed in their book.Updated versions can be found on the web.

Apart from these errors (due to continually changing views in dinosaur study), this is a great book that I would recommend to everyone.

A Most Excellent Dino Book For Children and Adults!
DK has done it again! This book is a wonderful resource for the family and the individual that is interested in dinosaurs. Why?

First, the book is compact. This means it can fit in small areas in your school bag, hip pack or even a pocket. This means you can have the book as source material on-hand without a great deal of personal imposition. If I personally was to use a pocket, I would prefer a trouser's cargo pocket. Why? Because I care about how my books age and how much damage they sustain.

Second, it is a typical DK book - in other words, beautifully illustrated. There are plenty of pictures both of actual fossils and modern science reproductions of dinosaurs.

Third, I love the silhouette comparisons between a 6ft (1.8m) tall human and the dinosaur being spoken of. I only wish that they would have more of them in this book. Between this volume and three of DK's other books (The DK Great Dinosaur Atlas also by William Lindsay and the Ultimate Dinosaur Book and the DK Guide to Dinosaurs both by David Lambert) you will get a wide variety of these silhouettes. Unfortunately, Mr. Lindsay and Mr. Lambert, despite both being from the British Museum, disagree on some of the silhouettes. Oh well, take the one you like best as gospel, eh? I do!

Fourth, it is well organized. It is divided into five sections:

Section 1 introduces the reader to dinosaurs. It speaks of what is a dinosaur, the world of the dinosaurs, the lifestyles of the dinosaurs, anatomy of the dinosaurs, the first dinosaurs, and of course, the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Sections II & III are the typical FUN parts of a dinosaur book that everyone is looking for - the parts that directly deal with the many types of dinosaurs. They are split into the traditional two categories of dinosaurs: the lizard-hipped or Saurischian dinosaurs and the bird-hipped or Ornithischian dinosaurs.

Section IV deals with the sea and air animals that many consider dinosaurs, but are not. Despite not being the stars of the book, the section does provide some good information on these.

Section V is the reference section. This can be priceless for the person who wants to know more about dinosaurs. The main value is two pages of dinosaur museums and sites in the USA and Canada with their addresses. An improvement here would have been the inclusion of WEB site addresses and phone numbers as well. The next valuable part of this section is the cannot-do-without pronunciation guide that most parents find to be a lifesaver. I know my wife depends on it! The section also talks of dino-discovery history, dino records and myths, how dinosaurs are taken out of the ground after being discovered and contains a glossary.

What is bad about the book? Not much! Only two things come to mind, one wishful and one serious. The wishful matter is that I just wish there was even more cool information about dinosaurs in the book. But if that was the case, it probably would not be the small convenient book to carry around. On the other hand the serious matter is that it was published in 1995. That means it is approaching six years old. That means dinosaurs like the Giganotosaurus from S. America and the Carchardontosaurus from Africa are not present. Simply, it is not going to show the latest discoveries. Is this a problem? No! This book is designed to be a handy reference, not an end-all-be-all reference. As long as DK updates this book every ten years or so, this book will be an eternal handy dino guide. If you are looking for something like an end-all-be-all dinosaur reference I would refer you to three books: The Complete Dinosaur by Farlow & Bret-Surman, The Dinosauria by Weishampel, Dodson & Osmolska and Dinosaurs: The Encyclopedia and its Supplement I by Glut & Bret-Surman. These are the ultimate books in the field. They are also not written for the common man. The level of writing/reading is fairly intense for the average reader. If you are looking for what would be a good introductory textbook on dinosaurs for the dino-fan with a good interest in the subject and decent reading comprehension, I would recommend Fastovsky and Weishampel's The Evolution and Extinction of the Dinosaurs. See my review of that book.

The Fourth Turning

Regarding the New York Times
Fortune cookies? Michael Lind, who wrote the New York Times review, could not have read the same book I did. In fact, Strauss and Howe explain their method at length and devote at least 70 pages to what is surely the most specific and breathtakingly concrete narrative of the next thirty years available anywhere. If anything, The Fourth Turning errs in not having enough fortune cookies in it. (When unveiling the future, after all, a little vagueness is prudent.) Lind, on the other hand, recently wrote a book subtitled "The Fourth American Revolution" but somehow forgot to mention whether this revolution would happen two years from now or two thousand years from now. I suggest readers judge these two books by noticing which one puts its bets, if not its fortune cookies, on the table

Uncanny, Cogent, and Potent
Since Strauss and Howe first got together to write GENERATIONS, they have demonstrated uncanny insight into American culture, the rhythms of history, and what the future will likely bring. Where their particular perspective deviates from your own, you can easily interpret their insights from multiple vantage points. If your experience with Strauss and Howe's work is similar to my own, it will transform your view of the world and your life. Do yourself and others you care about a favor and read it.

Perhaps the BEST book for Houston and Gulf Coast Gardeners
You will enjoy the many discoveries this book has to offer and it is beautifully illustrated with a color photograph and planting recommendations for every plant. I cannot recommend a better book for a Houston or Gulf Coast gardener, either expert or new comer, and I have read them all! It focuses on plants that truly do well HERE. It skips azaleas, hybrid roses, tulips and all the other fussy plants pushed by the local nurseries do great anywhere but here. Instead it offers beautiful and underused (and for the most part - EASY) alternatives.

Excellent
One of the best book's on Texas gardening.

Excellent Introduction and Overview on Psychology
I am a student in business administration and I wanted to have an introduction on and an overall view of the subject of psychology.

The book by Carlson and Buskist gave me an excellent overall view of psychology. I had the impression that it covers most of the aspects of psychology.

In my view, the book went sometimes too much into biology. As I am not interested in this subject I could easily skip those parts.

This book motivated me to read more about several disciplines and aspects of the science.

I truly can recommend this book! I now have a better understanding of human behaviour, the functioning of our brain, our interaction with the environment and mental disorders.

The best book on aerobatics, on a par with Stick and Rudder
Neil Williams was a British test pilot and aerobatic pilot with a rare gift of skill in both flying and writing. He was a World Champion of aerobatic competition. This book is the standard text on aerobatics, to be considered on a par with Langewiesche's Stick and Rudder and Robert Buck's Weather Flying. He writes with the authority and conciseness which can only come from absolute mastery of the subject, but also accomplishes conveying the finer points as well as the fundamentals of aerobatic flying to an inexperienced reader. It is also true that few accomplished aerobatic pilots can read this book without improving their knowledge in some way.

As well as the technical aspects of the technique of aerobatic flight, Williams also includes the human aspects, what it feels like, why pilots are drawn to it, giving an insight that non-pilots will enjoy.

The writing style is witty and interesting, with many anecdotes. It is not the kind of book that simply tells you push this and that will happen. If you understand this book, you will understand your airplane, regardless of its attitude.

A Wonderous Fable for Young and Young-at-Heart...
The Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh...in his 100 Acre Wood Eden...are celebrations of friendship and loyalty. Maurice Sendak's WHERE the WILD THINGS Are, startlingly glimpses into fun; adventure and beckoning unknown dangers inhabiting the seemingly guileless imagination of children. THE VELVETEEN RABBIT might be thought to complement these major modern works of CHILDREN MYTHOLOGY. "How Toys become Real..." is subtitle and theme of this superbly crafted fable about LOVE: its promise; pain and overwhemling power to miraculously transform. Like all great fairy-tales, cuentoes and parables, the story is Once-upon-a-Time simple. It can be read to any child over three, and read by any child eight or older(3.5 g/e). It is told from point of view of a "really splendid, fat and bunchy Velveteen Rabbit...with coat spotted brown and white...real thread whiskers...and ears lined with pink sateen." The toy rabbit "quests" the love of his playmate master(BOY)that can...according to Mentor and friend THE SKIN HORSE...grant REALITY.
"When a child loves you for a long, long time...not just to play with...but REALLY loves you, then you become REAL."

Adorning this story is the wonderous art of illustrator Donna Green. In this 1995/98 edition, the "picture book" is illuminated with beautiful oil, acrylic, and lush pastel paintings that glow, and shimmer Life-like and LOVE-like. It is beautiful art work intrinsically conveying Margery Williams' mythical message to the young and young-at heart. (10 Stars)

My daughter's favorite book!
Daughter Anna (now 19 years old) loved this book. It was her favorite above all others. As we sorted through some old kid things for give-away purposes, we stumbled upon this old, well worn copy of "The Velveteen Rabbit." She insisted we keep the book for HER children.

This was her book that Mama (me!) had to read to her again and again and again. As soon as the last word was read on the last page, it was "Mama, please read it again!"

(how I miss those days, by the way!)

The book also has a powerful message about Love that children understand and cherish.

This is a wonderful book. No child should be without their own copy of "The Velveteen Rabbit."

The most inspirational story that I've ever read.
This is a heartwarming story about a toy rabbit filled with sawdust that wants to be real. He realizes what the meaning of "real" is when his owner, a young boy, gives him the answer for which he searches. My wife bought this book for me last month. I missed it as a child. I've learned the lesson in this book in traditional ways, by trial and error. I would have loved to have this treasure as a child and thank my beautiful wife, Lori, for giving it to me, now. Only real love has any meaning or longevity, at all. I ask you readers to not pass up this gem of a book. It is a must for children and adults alike.
