Modern prose poet of Bengal
His poetry captures the ennui of urban life and depicts the crisis of the intelligentsia of the city of Calcutta as it stood poised to descend calamitiously from its apogee. The city of poetry and much creative distinction was about to be swallowed up by the violence of religious exclusivism that ended in the partition of the province and the destruction of the leisured class that was responsible for much of its greatness. The endemic sensuality of his poetry is a counterpoint to a defeated city, but also a reiteration of universal themes of human disenchantment. It is informed by the poet's loss of his mother at a tender age and the experience of nursing his dying aunt as a boy. I knew the poet well and his withered frame (through the 70s and 80s) was a mirror to the loss suffered by the people of the city. Yet, when he spoke his voice was deep and sonorous and the recording in vinyl of him reciting his own words is to be cherished. The Pritish Nandy rendition of the collected works has some strange lapses in translation, but it has an absolutely marvellous introduction. I found the comments of the earlier reviewer, Melanie Wilke, very moving.

Familiar with the Poems, not with the Book
...but I can't wait to get it. It's so hard to find stuff by Samar Sen, and I think he's one of my favorite poets ever. His style is so clear, yet open to so many interpretations. Everything he writes iis beautiful... sometimes a random poems will bring tears to my eyes, not just because of the content, but the beautiful style as well. Definitely on my must-get-NOW books.

Very unique
I've never read a book written by a community before. It makes for very interesting reading. Of course, some stories are better than others, but the overall experience is excellent.

Excellent collection
An excellent collection by authors of south Asian origin. The authors are from a wide spectrum of background, each having his own way of looking at life. Similar to the background of authors the subject of the stories/articles too are varied, some makes you laugh like a wodehouse story (eg. once upon a flight) whereas the others will make you think about things in life which we normally ignore, like looking at life from someone else's point of view (eg Mirrors). Do read it, I am sure you would enjoy it.

Wonderful compilation!
This collection of precious nuggets from amateur writers of Indian origin is a delightful read. The authors' sheer love for writing is reflected in the many diverse pieces featured in this book. Sulekha has truly proven itself to be THE forum for people all over the world to celebrate their common Indian bond.

The editors have done a great job in providing for a wonderful variety in the content. This book is going to be a stocking stuffer in a lot of my friends' households this year for sure!
