Bill Myers "Forbidden Doors" books have been just what the Physician ordered. I've enjoyed Myers' adult novels, but I think his books for the younger set are even more entertaining. And, above all, they shed light on the biblical definitions of good and evil.
"The Deceived" is the second book we've read together. We liked the first book, but this one was even more riveting. This time, Myers lets one of his main characters, Rebecca, face the deception that's all around. She begins to succumb to the "logic" of reincarnation and hypnotism, mesmerized by the beguiling Maxwell Hunter. Her struggle is believable. Scary stuff. And, with the end of each chapter, my daughter was begging for more. In fact, she let her library book of R.L. Stine's sit abandoned on the table as we cruised through the pages of "The Deceived" to discover Rebecca's final outcome.
We've already obtained a copy of the third book, "The Spell." We can't wait to get started! Hello, Bill Myers. Goodbye, R.L. Stine!
Reincarnation is definetly not my specialty( I never understood it before) but Bill Myers explained it and showed us how dangerous it is.

I found the writing to be enchanting, as well as fluid. I can honestly say that I found little to judge in this book even though I do have to say that I am quite the analytical reader (another prejudice.) I am so inspired by the touches that Myers added to the father. His yearnings for loving communion with his daughter brought relationships on this earth into view. I commend him for opening his heart to all of us, in such a wonderful piece of artistic pleasure. I may be analytical, but my emotional tendencies somewhat had the reins in this book.
I truly believe that if you pick up this book and open your heart to what the Lord has in store for you, the fallacies that the author might have made would be menial to the message that his Inspiration yearns to whisper lovingly into your ear. I am not implying in any way that there were any fallacies, but I am saying that this book has truly ministered to my heart and if you give it the chance it will be a revolutionary element in how you view your father and how to strive for the Father.
The story was based on the book The Last Leaf; When The Last Leaf Falls is a story of a teenage girl and her family. Ally is a typical teenager, she loved hanging out with her friends, listening to music and going to movies. When she was diagnosed with cancer that all changed for her and her family. Her father, Paul was a pastor and her grandfather was a retired pastor also. Her grandfather had a very close relationship with Ally and spent most of his time in their shed painting, trying to create God's love on canvas.
The book begins with her father waiting by the glowing neon light of the time on the microwave. He was waiting to receive a call from some close family friends on when they would arrive to look after Ally's younger sister and brother, Ally was in the hospital and he was waiting to join her and her mother there. While he is waiting he remembers times of her growing up and struggles she had to face while being treated with chemotherapy. As she lost her hair and grew even more ill she slowly stopped having faith in God. There had always been only one leaf on their tree in the backyard. The book is titled When The Last Leaf Falls because Ally always said when the last leaf off their maple tree fell she would be gone. Her granddad died before he could show his masterpiece of God's love one in which he had slaved over for months. Now, I don't want to give the ending away but he did complete his painting, an outstanding one "but while he may never paint his great work of art, he definitely helping to shape another masterpiece... his granddaughter" but to find out how you will have to read the book.
Having cancer is terrible and a tragedy to a family. For Ally and her family it was a test, a test of their love for God and their responsibilities to each other. I enjoyed reading this book every day, it showed me how God really works in mysterious ways.

Daniel begins a quest to learn the truth behind the mysterious stone that was given them by a market trader at the last minute. It's old, it's strange . . . and it's potentially the reason why Jill was killed. He is joined by his estranged son Tyler, and interested archaeologist Helen Zimmerman. A native Muslim girl named Nayra joins them as well, offering her knowledge of the region in their search. God blesses their mission, and they are successful many times. But Daniel is also haunted by dreams, the same type of dreams that his wife mentioned the night before she died - and the same dreams that seem to be caused by the stones.
At the same time Daniel's quest is progressing, another man is on a hunt for the stones. Ibrahim El-Magd is a devout Muslim, and he believes that Allah's time has come. He has positioned many members of his radical group around the world to engage in "Allah's Day" of judgment and cleansing. He too has learned of the stones, and has experienced dreams. He, too searches for more of the mysterious stones, in hopes that his dreams will be fulfilled, and that he will also see . . . The Face of God.
BAD POINTS: This book is a violent book, no question there. In fact, author Bill Myers requests that any reader under 17 delay reading it until he or she is a little older. That's an NC-17 rating, folks. If it were made into a movie, with today's lax rating standards, it would probably only warrant an R rating, but it's still rather intense. Violence includes the cutting off of a Muslim boy's hand as punishment for stealing, a few deaths by gunshots (including Jill Lawson's), and a nighttime raid on a Christian group in a Muslim country. One soldier proceeds to disrobe a young girl, and uses his sword to cut off her . . . well, her feminine aspects, okay? There's also a few [love] references: Helen uses her womanhood to gain favors from government agents, and various small-time indications.
GOOD POINTS: The book is written from a Christian perspective, in case you haven't noticed yet. Daniel believes in God, and tries his best to follow Him. Each Stone he uncovers, however, teaches him something that he has somehow lost sight off, and helps him see his wrongdoing. There is a lot of material about the Muslim world versus the Christian world. In fact, for most of the book, it appears as if Myers "goes soft" on Muslims by indicating that they are men of devout faith, not entirely unlike believers in Christ. Perhaps, it appears, they are even more devout, as they strive to be holy more than Christians. The words "politically correct" come to mind. But all this is wrapped up very nicely in the end, really. It's just something to watch out for.
THOUGHTS:
Myers states in his introduction that he finished this book on September 11th, so you can tell as you go through it that it took some re-editing on his part to graft references to such events. Things like "ever since the victory of 9/11, the enemy had been bombing more frequently" and things like that.
The book is a good read for Christian fiction enthusiasts, but do watch out for the violent content.
What do we have in this Christian fiction thriller? A pastor who outwardly seems like the perfect servant of God, but who, through tragedy and visions, sees that he's lost his first love, not just the literal one--his wife, but the Biblical idea of what this means. This, and the possession of an unusual green gemstone with Hebraic inscription, sets off a chain of breathless events, some exhilirating and some tragic, that all lead our main character to experience transformation, find illumination (in more ways than one), and see the God whose face is...well, read the book. :)
The pace is unrelenting. You will not be bored. The characters include all three major monotheistic religions--Judaism, Islamic and Christian. The setting moves from the middle east to Europe to Africa to the US. It's all over the map, but not haphazardly. The story is totally focused on the external journey (finding the 12 stones of the Levitical high priest's breastplate, plus the Urim and Thummin) which parallels the internal journey (from legalism to satisfying relationship). The ending is realistic, with some matters satisfyingly closed, and others interestingly open-ended. Muslim characters are treated with respect--not simply painted as all malicious, wild-eyed, bomb-carrying killers. In this current tense environment, that alone gets Mr. Myers a thumbs up.
The first novel of Mr. Myers that I read, BLOOD OF HEAVEN, was exciting, but it didn't have the heart, the really moving moments, that THE FACE OF GOD provides. I felt my own moments of real conviction about my own legalistic tendencies while reading this book. Im now on my own journey to recapture my first love and see the face of the Beloved more clearly, and reflect it better. Thank you, Mr. Myers.
I recommend this book to all believers--and not just Christian ones. :)

Of course, numerous other major catastrophes occur as well, during those 72 hours.
One thing kept occurring to me. No matter what his sex is, if one is thrown into ballet or any other activity he is unfamiliar with, he will face a much harder time than someone who has practiced it for a long time. So if a boy doing ballet and a girl playing football switched places, they would both find it a lot harder.
There was a story in the story, a story Wally was writing about a superhero. I liked how Wally's superhero sometimes took on a life of its own, talking back to Wally and not doing what Wally wanted. I hear that real writers have that experience all the time.
In reading the well-known, oft-repeated dialog "Is too." "Is not." et al., I was reminded of the March of the Peers in "Iolanthe" by Gilbert and Sullivan. One faction of the peers (the tenors) shouted "Tan-tan-ta-ra!" while the other faction (the basses) countered with "Tsing boom!"
