Fun book!
I'm the owner of one of the apartment houses that are listed in this book. It's a private residence, so out of respect for my tenants' privacy, I won't specify which one.

Even though I wasn't the owner at the time this book was published, I can confirm that one of the families living there is still experiencing occasional phenomena. Granted, it's nothing as extreme as the incidents detailed in the book by a few of the former tenants, but it's still enough to remind them that not every noise in the dark or slamming door has a neat and tidy explanation.

Overall, this is a fun book. If you're looking for a good book for late night reading, I'd recommend this one.

An excellent book and very fun to read!
This has got to be one of the most interesting books on ghostly phenomena out there to date! The format used by the author for each story in the book was creative and is something I have yet to see in other books on the subject of ghosts. Because the format was unique, it made the book very interesting and such a pleasure to read! For those looking for good ghost stories to read without getting bored, this book will not dissapoint you. An excellent read!

Not as scary as I expected however it was quite interesting.
Arthur Myers, if you read this our little town is full of ghosts. Historic New Castle, DE is where we're located and if your ever in the area it's definitely worth a stop!!! I am a huge "fan" of ghosts and even though I've never seen one I do believe they exist.

Throw another log on the fire, sit back, and enjoy.
For a book of ghost stories to be worth its weight in salt it has to start out with a good writer. One who weaves his stories so as to draw the reader into the ghostly realm. Arthur Myers is up to this task and his writing style is very pleasing.

In this book the reader will find well documented ghost sightings that come to us from all over the United States. One finds in the pages of this book weeping portraits, poltergeists, and a New York ghost who plays Mozart. In an interesting departure from the norm in this type of book Mr. Myers divides each chapter up into catagories. First, there is simply enough the location and description of the haunt. Next one finds a history of the the place in question including a worldly history and the history of the manifestations. Near the conclusion of the chapter Myers attempts to identify the spirit and its personality. I guess ghosts have personalities. Finally he tells us if the place is still haunted, the best time to experence the haunt, who the witnesses have been, who submitted the story to him, and if there has been a formal psychic investigation. The ghostly manifestations section will often send a distinct chill up the readers spine. At least in my case it did.

If you love this type of book or if you are just looking for something to read in front of the fire on a cool October night this book would be a good choice.

Only good for the stories...
Not very good if you actually plan to use this book to find haunted places. The book was published in 1985, so all the information concerning who owns the homes or businesses is out of date. Also, a number of the stories come from people who no longer live in the haunted houses or work in the haunted businesses, or from people choose to keep the locations anonymous. You have no idea if the places are still haunted or if you are even allowed to visit now. It would be nice if the author could go back and do some follow up research and update this book.

If you just want to read some good ghost stories, the book is a fun read. If you want a book to help you start your search for haunted places to visit, this is not it.

Ghostly Tourist Guide
The Registers covers haunted places in thirty of the fifty states. It's in essences a ghostly tourist guide. Each chapter includes the location, description of place, ghostly manifestations, history, identity of ghost, personality of ghost, witnesses, best time to witness, and info on any investigations done and who the data was submitted by. The stories of the manifestations really just wet the appetite and leave the reader wanting move. This book gives just a taste of the possible paranormal adventures awaiting visitors at these various and far-ranging sites. Pick up a copy before you plan your next vacation!

The Ghostly Register
The books by Arthur Myers are my VERY favorites on the subject of ghosts.
The layout is WONDERFUL, never set up like a story, but more like an interview. I really hate books about ghosts that make it sound more like a story than an actual account.
Mr Myers seems to have great sense about how to relate this information. It involves real people and real places. The accounts are always accompanied with pictures of the location, the actual witnesses, and a few pictures of ghostly manifestations (orbs, a couple apparitions and mists)
Information is also provided from his perception and from any psychic or paranormal investigator who've been to the site. Mr Meyers also approaches everything in a very courteous way. His writing is "light" never dry. His friendly manner always shines through. Which makes his books much more enjoyable to read.

This book contains 64 stories in 358 pages covering most of the states in the U.S.
Including an investigation of the Queen Mary, a retired luxery liner, docked in Long Beach California. British built and set sail on it's maiden voyage in 1936. It's experienced many deaths, natural and unnatural. Like when the ships chef was actually shoved into an oven, where he died.

The author goes aboard John Wayne's former yaht, now with new owners who've experienced some strange happenings, they attribute to the "Duke".

It includes a facinating story about one wierd Toys R Us in California. The store has had a history of scary happenings. And renown psychic Sylvia Brown investigates. Includes a spooky picture of the reputed ghost, taken during the investigation. Shown first in infra-red film and regular film, then blown up to a reveal a apparent apparition. The employees tell of someone standing behind them, touching their hair. And someone banging on a door at closing time, when no one was supposed to be there!

Also: Edith Wharton's former mansion, which has since been inhabitited by a girls school called "Foxhollow School" which used the building called "The Mount" as a dormitory. In 1978 an acting troupe moved in called "Shakespeare and Company". Witnesses include Shakespearean actors and former alumnas of the former girls school.

The book explores many old buildings in New England. And has a very interesting story about an old inn in Pennsylvania called "The General Wayne Inn" which is the longest operating Inn in the country. Built in 1704. And serving such famous people as : George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Edgar Allen Poe. Originally called Streeper's Tavern it's changed it's name in honor of General "Mad Anthony" Wayne who conquered lands from the Indians between Ohio and Mississippi in 1795, and had a three day bash at the tavern. It's reputed to have ghosts from three different centuries.

And a story about a restaurant in Florida called Ashley's Restaurant, built in the late 1920's it's changed owners many times and names too: The Loose Caboose, The Mad Duchess, The Sparrow Hawk, Gentlemen Jim's. Now it's experiencing things descibed as "ominous" by the then owner. This also includes a frightening picture.
Many, many more stories....And many places dicussed were public, and probably still are public. Though they may have changed hands, and names. But the adresses are given.

Let the spirit be with you!
This was a book that raised my curiosity in the introduction then pulled me further within it many fascinating chapters on the world of communicating with animals. It was well written and researched book full of detailed documented cases, with tips from all the experts laced throughout make it a must have volume I feel for any serious animal lover, veterinarian or scientist wishing to gain more insight into the spiritual nature of the other living creatures.

Lovely overall view of Animal Communications
I found this book to be a wonderful 'introduction' resource for those who are curious about animal communication. It is particularly valuable for the skeptic, as it was written by a skeptic (or at least he started out that way). It looks at the skill of communicating telepathically with animals from an 'outside' viewpoint, allowing the reader to step back and consider with a critical yet unprejudiced eye just what they are seeing. I think this book will open skeptical minds at least to the overall idea that what they are looking at is possible, even if it does not convert them totally to the cause. A definite recommendation to all with an interest in the subject, and a fine 'first look' for those who wish to know more.

Thumbs up.

[Another good book for the beginner and those who are looking at the subject from an outside perspective is Patty Summers' book, "Talking With the Animals".]

This is a MUST HAVE.
My curiosity with Animal Communication lead me to pick up Arthur Myer's book on communicating with animals. It is a must have for anyone interested, curious, and even skeptical on the whole subject. Myer has more or less written on his investigation with so-called communicators; their stories, their techniques, and has left it up to his reader's to believe or not to believe. This is the foundation for anyone opening their eyes to this world. Though it is not written to "teach" you animal communication, it certainly sheds light on the subject enough that will encourage you to desire to learn more.

Credible supporting references of authors findings in book!
The author submits some simple pictures of areas of the haunts. He, then also interviews others who have experienced the supernatural. Gives an analysis of the ghosts and when the best time to witness the spirits. Indicates if location is still visited by the dead. Gives you the history of the location and of the deceased. Will hold your interest. More of a reference book than a "scary" one

A Handy Traveller's Guide to Haunted Places
As with his two previous books (The Ghostly Gazeteer and The Ghostly Register), the intention of A Ghost Hunter's Guide is not meant to scare (though many of the tales are spooky) but to serve as a sort of Mobil Traveller's Guide to haunted places.

Unlike other books on the subject that are most often written by self proclaimed ghost hunters, psychics or parapsychologists, Arthur Myers is a seasoned reporter who admits to never having seen a ghost. He does, however, believe in the sincerity of the people he has interviewed and included in his book. He follows the leads, reports on what he finds and present the information in a manner that is useful to the reader.

The book is broken down alphabetically by state and each section provides such information as the haunt's location, how to get there, the history of the location, when to see the ghost and if the location is still haunted.

It's a fun and often interesting read. You may discover that the quiet, unassumi! ! ng building just down the street from your home may be haunted...

Review: Ghosts of the Rich and Famous
As with all Mr. Myers' books, this is a well written account of supposedly haunted dwellings -- in particular, those of famous folk. He draws no conclusions, which gives his tome an air of journalistic honesty. Very interesting, somewhat spooky in places, and quite entertaining.

Magic, Witchcraft, & Religion
I currently use this book as the text for a class I teach at California State University, Chico (Anthropology 40: Magic, Witchcraft, & Religion). I was fortunate enough to have taken this and other courses from the authors Arthur C. Lehmann and James E. Myers. This book serves as a good reader for comparative religions and focuses on non-western societies. Articles on western belief systems are used for comparison and contrasting with the non-western examples. Although targeted for the freshman level, the text assumes the reader have some understanding of anthropology.
