War in Another Dimension
One usually thinks of soldiers exclusively when considering warfare. Only as a second thought are civillians, surgeons and chaplins given any attention. A Shepherd in Combat Boots will rectify that laxity in thinking. Father Emil Kapaun's story is one of compelling compassion for fellow human beings in the peculiar circumstances of combat and captivity. He was a man of action when the simplest of gestures counted. By his example soldiers learned the true meanings of love, sacrifice, duty and honor. No one can read this book without being touched and without asking "why have I never heard of this man before?"

The story of a hero
"A Shepherd in Combat Boots" is the story of a remarkable soldier, priest and human being. In this day and age, where people loosely confer the title of "hero" on media stars and sports figures, it is inspiring to read the story of a true hero -- Father Emil Kapaun, a simple chaplain who gave unselfishly of himself and placed his own life in jeopardy to serve his fellow soldiers during the Korean War. As a member of the U.S. military reserve, I found the story a moving reminder of what it means to serve one's country and fellow man.

The extensive endnotes and bibliography indicate that the author has thoroughly researched his subject matter. Yet, while providing a great deal of information, the author has produced a story which is quite readable. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the Korean War (as I did in reading it) or to anyone who is simply looking for an inspirational, true story.

Father Kapaun provided a tremendous example of courage to the young soldiers in his care during the most frightening and difficult circumstances. His story would send a positive message to any reader and might be particularly appreciated by young readers (teens and above), who may be trying to formulate their own answers to the question of what it really means to live one's life as a hero.

Fr. Kapaun is an inspiration.
I am a teacher at a Catholic high school in Wichita, KS-- Kapaun Mt. Carmel. In 1955, Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School opened its doors to Catholic young men of the Wichita Diocese. In 1972, CKM joined with Mt. Carmel Academy (girls) to form Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School. Throughout the year, we celebrate the life and extraordinary contribution of Fr. Emil Kapaun. The book does an incredible job of recounting the Korean experience of Fr. Kapaun. He is truly an inspriation to our student body and faculty, just as he becomes to all who read the book.

Still standard, but no longer the last word.
Even recently published English-language grammars of Biblical Hebrew admit that Gesenius-Kautsch-Cowley (GKC) is still good for people like me who can't (yet) read German.

As you read the Hebrew Bible and find grammatical challanges, look first in Jouon-Muraoka, Williams and Waltke-O'Connor . If they don't answer your question, look in GKC. If GKC doesn't answer it, look in commentaries.

The binding of GKC is beautiful and durable.

By far the best in Hebrew Grammars
I have used many other grammars in my studies of Biblical Hebrew and none have been as helpful as this one. I would seriously consider selling the others if they were not required texts for my future studies. His handling of Hebrew and cognate languages will give a student a much deeper knowledge than many of the modern grammars targeted at a lazier student audience.

A "Must Have," and Worth All the Work Needed to Read It
Whether one is taking formal education classes or is seeking to read Biblical Hebrew on his/her own, this text will have to become part of the personal library. There are grammatical issues in Hebrew that are never explained in 1st-year grammars, but one will need to know them, and Gesenius provides this.

I recommend reading this book from cover to cover at least twice: once as a studious overview, secondly as a serious study, maybe putting notes into your Hebrew text. But the following explanation is needed: there are portions of information that do not have to be known to thoroughly understand what one is reading in the Hebrew Tanach. Much of the information is analytical more from a linguistics standpoint. In other words, don't think you need to know everything in the book. But embedded within the optional information is other information one will need; so all the book must be read.

The book can be broken down into 3 levels:
1. That which every serious student must know. This would mean that most of the book needs to be known, with probably placing details into your Hebrew text for reference. This text is especially needed for grammatical variations not found in basic grammars (e.g., a rare form of the infinitive used with intransitive verbs; the fem. objective affix seemingly having no antecedent, but actually having a previous phrase or clause for its antecedent, regardless of gender, Gen. 15:6); the ignoring of gender at times, etc. Like any other language, Hebrew has grammatical structures that have "broken the rules."

2. That which is interesting to know and which may or may not really help in translation. This would, for instance, include some of the heavier details concerning rules for vowel changes, etc.

3. That which surely does not need to be known to read and understand Hebrew. This information is for people who are grammar geeks, who need to know how things work even though not knowing this information will not hurt anyone's communication skills. Much of this has to do with comparing Hebrew with other Semitic and European languages. It's interesting, and in other fields, it is important; but for the Hebrew reader, this tends to be ineffectual in helping the student who is learning to read Hebrew. Don't be discouraged by this stuff as you read the book; read it and move on.

Just as with English, volumes can be written on how a language works, and Gesenius provides this. But no one needs to know the most intricate circuitry to communicate. For instance, speakers in English say, "If he were to go, I would stay." The rule for having a plural verb for the singular pronoun is: "3rd person singular subjunctive uses a plural verb." Most people don't know this, and yet they speak correctly. The same is true with Hebrew: You can get overloaded with the details, and yet without those details a student of Hebrew won't have a problem.

As one progresses in the book, the information becomes more practical in a sense, moving away from all the technical analysis of language and moving into what is really needed for anyone to do translation.

Again, read it twice; you won't be sorry. I could have rated this book as 4 stars because of it going beyond what is really necessary for a practical grammar. But I have to rate it 5 stars because it is such a comprehensive volume, serving both the researcher in practical grammar and the researcher in scholarly grammar and linguistics. Even the person learning Hebrew from a reader's standpoint will benefit from ALL the information.

Good introductory chemistry lab book
This book uses removable pages as prelabs which were very good in giving a conceptual idea of the experiments before they were done. Also, there are good flowcharts, equations for every step of the reactions, and formulas to help do the problems. All data that needs to be recorded is clearly mentioned in a form format.

Viktor E. Frankl: Life With Meaning
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (1993)
Author: William Blair Gould
Amazon base price: $38.95
Used price: $18.00
Average review score:

Overview of Philosophies
This book compares Frankl's teachings to many different psychologists and philosophers from Plato and Aristotle to BF Skinner, Carl Rogers, Freud, and many others who you may recognize. Each chapter compares and contrasts Frankl to different people.

'A good reminder of roots of Psychology in general, although I prefer, in studying Frankl, to read his own words more directly.

This is more of a textbook on psychology and a good review of philosophy and psychology from early times.

Not a quick and easy read unless you are already well versed in these areas.

First good broad approach to a symbol
William Blair Gould's (Univ. of Dubuque) book, in spite of its title, doesn't fall in the widespread trap of evaluating Viktor Frankl only as a "hero" of psychotherapy, in the name of his well-known journey to the undergrounds of world misery during World War II. His book is an animated picture of Frankl's influences, references and contacts with the world of Philosophy, trying to show how it affected his view of Science and Culture. A picture well put into paper, pleasurable to read and - what is a must to most readers - short, very (sometimes too) concise. In eight short chapters, Mr. Gould analyzes the connexions and influences between Frankl and other thinkers, such as: Freud (ch. I-II), Kant (III), James (IV), existentialism (V-VI), humanist psychology (VII). The book ends with a beautiful chapter, almost a "manifesto" (VIII), where Gould joins Frankl's voice for a renewed kind of psichology that bears attention to human beings, converting itself to a kind of supporting tool of human freedom. In short: well written book, good introductory reading about the thought of a very influential, insightful and constructive thinker of this century. Rated only tree stars, because it sometimes depends all too havily on second-hand sources, and because it's more suggestive than deep. But if you want to start thinking about "...Frankl's role as a philosopher and ... how his philosophy affects his theories and practice of meaning analysis" (page vii), go ahead. Absolutely.

Waste of money
It can be read in less than 5 minutes. If you enjoy proverbs, don't expect much from this book

This IS a nifty little book...
Hey folks...keep it in perspective. This is a miniature book and is MEANT to be read in about 5 or 10 minutes. That's it's charm! It's like buying a greeting card for someone---only better. The book is well-bound, has beautiful ancient Chinese paintings, a thoughtful and relevant foreward by the author, and--yes--it does have a few thought-provoking proverbs to give you a little nudge in your thinking when you need it. Purse or glove-compartment; it's handy and makes a nifty tiny gift. Recommended.

I Happened To Love It!
I happened to find this little tiny book on a shelf in a store in San Diego. I looked at it and went, hmmmm... this looks interesting. I looked at it a little bit and was instantly fascinated. Thought I could have read the whole book in the store, I decided to buy it and read the rest later. So I did and it has not left me since. Though what is in the book may be just stupid little Chinese proverbs to some people, there is a depth to them that cannot be denied. They are basic principles for everyday life that we sometimes forget to listen to. It is an excellent little pocket book to carry around to consent to in times of need when you can just pull it out, and remember how simple life really is.
