A Blast From The Past
I read Willie's collection of poems, and as usual found him to be very deep, inspiring, and intuitive. When I use words like, "blast from the past", and "as usual", it is based on a familiarity of the author. Willie Perdomo and I went to the same college, and we were good friends. He used to read poetry to his circle of friends at college, and everyone had nothing but the upmost respect for him. He has, a way with words that captures your attention and forces you to think. Bravo, Willie on your successful book. May you continue to dominate and implode the literary world with your thoughts on latino/latina struggles.

Sharp Collection
A couple of years back, a friend of mine gave me a grocery bag full of books. I found an exquisite piece of work beneath the pile - Where a Nickel Costs a Dime. I live down south - way south and life here can be homogenous. With this book, I saw el barrio without leaving mine. I walked up 125th street without moving my feet. I cried, lived and died in Harlem. The collection of images is sharp. I won't compare Willie Perdomo to anyone else. No se puede. (He can't be.)

Where a Nickel Costs a Dime - a must.

OUTSTANDING!!
Willie Perdomo uses the language and flow of the people living and experiencing life in el barrio & the hood and introduces them to the masses. His style speaks to all who read him. It's as if wants to paint you a picture and include you in his recollections. I'm definitely feelin' him!

Excellent story line
I recently read "The Courting of Marcus Dupree" and found it to be exciting and spell binding. My entire family was caught up in it. The book is an excellent tale of the birth of a young Black male in a troubling time for the South. The way Willie Morris related Marcus' birth and powerful strength to the struggle of his town and state was awesome, he should be the Mayor of Philadelphia or the Governor of Mississippi. I expected the book to be totally about football but it proved to be much more. It made you laugh and cry at times because of the tremendous pressure on Marcus Dupree, the 17 year old athlete that was blessed with such miraculous skills. The book made you feel like you were at the games when he made some of the beautiful plays. It was so intense that you wanted to get to the next page, but never wanted the book to end. I wish it was reprinted.

An Interesting Tale of Football and the South
I read this book again recently and it was better than I remembered. It was so interesting to see how one 17 year old boy could dominate one small town's conversations. I expected this book to be a tale of a high school football star and his recruitment, but I got more, much more. Willie Morris examines the importance of football in Mississippi and how Marcus brought blacks and whites together with his play. He had insight in to Marcus that nobody outside of his family and high school coach could have had. Overall, a great read.

A great read even if you are not a football fan
As an OU fan and a person who remember Marcus Dupree light up Norman during his brief time, I was very excited to have a little bit more background on this fascinating person.

The book hits several different topics. Obviously his recruitment of many football schools at times take center stage. But much of the book also discusses the effect of a black athlete becoming a state hero in Mississippi and gaining fans of all races. The foil of Dupree's time to that of two decades earlier when three cival rights activists were brutally murdered by the Klan. And the author, Willie Morris, contrasting and comparing his life with what he sees around him while following Dupree.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great personal account that takes you back to 1981 Mississippi, civil rights, and the power of football.

irreverent, over-the-top but essentially correct
It's great to read a book about wine that is not afraid to express a different opinion; namely that big over-oaked wines have little to do with food. unfortunately, those are the wines that get the big scores. if more wine writers tasted wine with food as opposed to wine with other wines, we would get more sensible and friendly reviews of food-friendly wines. only caveat, don't be put off by gluckstern's over-the-top style.

Really informative and fun to read!
After reading this book, my friends were amazed at how well I was able to choose a wine at dinner. The Wine Avenger taught me everything I needed to know, and it's hysterical to read!

Buy This Wine Book First
Among the jungle of wine books available, Gluckstern's stands alone. In a clear, trusting and friendly tone, he demystifies wine, debunks many myths about it, and provides the confidence and know-how to go out and explore wine on your own.

After reading this, you'll rarely get taken again by paid-off, know-nothing wine shop sales clerks, and you'll be able to navigate smoothly around restaurant wine lists. This book is long overdue and Gluckstern deserves some sort of public service award.

A winner! Where's Disney with the movie!
My 7-yr-old boy and 5-yr-old girl both were equally fascinated by the story and pictures. It moved to the top of the list overnight, beating out "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and "Bear Hunt." Hey, Disney -- does anyone there read great children books like this? My kids want a movie!

A Jewel of a Picture Book about the WWW
As a parent of two and a founder of a Silicon Valley-based startup Internet business, this unique book caught my eye. It's the only picture book for elementary children I've seen that features a Web theme.

The story captured the imagination of my children. And I was surpised to find myself reading a picture book on the Internet that was entertaining for young kids, yet did not condescend to them (or me). This book cleverly provides a window into current and future information age themes -- the very issues we in Silicon Valley confront each day and that are profoundly changing our society.

I highly recommend this book, particularly to people interested in prompting their children to think about the pros and cons of technology, the choices technology requires us to make, and how we can best use it in our lives.

A Vivid and Memorable Children's Book
This book is a big hit at my daughter's elementary school school, where the teachers, library staff, parents and the community have worked together to incorporate the Internet into the curriculum as a resource for teachers and children.

The author contrasts the themes of reality and virtual reality against a backdrop of the digital frontier of the Internet, and uses the techniques of traditional fables along the way. My only criticism is I think the publisher would have produced better art by using an artist who specializes in digital imaging techniques to produce illustrations that were less static. This is a story that could use more complex images, which better convey movement and better accompany the vivid imagery the writer uses.

I highly recommend the book, though. Particularly after seeing the teachers' and kids' reaction to it. The Web is a new frontier. And the space metaphors and the character of Evelyn, the astronaut who advances the plot (and seems to be based on Amelia Earhart), fit perfectly with the book's theme of moderation and the need for a healthy balance between things in the digital world and the "real" world. I think this is an important issue for parents raising kids today. Overall, this is an imaginative and memorable book for elementary kids of all ages.

Corduroy
Published in Paperback by Live Oak Media (1993)
Authors: Don Freeman and Willie Colon
Amazon base price: $37.95
Average review score:

Five paws. . .uh, stars, for this one. . .
Those elegant downtown department stores that close at 6pm are getting fewer and far between, but this book takes you back to a time when a visit to one could fulfill a child's most fervent wish or dream. Corduroy is sitting on the shelf in the toy department when Lisa spots him and, of course, wants her mom to buy him. Her mother says no, because he's missing a button from his suspenders. Well, Corduroy goes looking for the missing button that night, thinking that's why he hasn't been picked to go home with someone yet.

This story is almost a primitive variation on "Toy Story," where the toys come to a life of their own when humans aren't around. . .and of course, like Woody, Buzz, and even the Misfit Toys from "Rudolph," Corduroy knows that his purpose in life is to love and be loved by a child. If your child watches the "Corduroy" shorts on PBS, get this book and let him or her see how he first found a home. I hate to say it, but I nearly always cry when I get to the last two pages. I just love happy endings:)

Loved it then....and love it now!
I first read(well, had it read to)this book when I was in pre-school(1984-ish) and I loved it! My favorite illistration was of Corduroy pulling the "button" off the matress and flying in the air!

Anyway, I saw this book in a child's consigment shop nearly two years ago(May 27th, to be exact). I didn't have any money to buy it, but my friend was willing to buy it for me(it was only a dollar)and I read it and enjoyed it all over again.

Since I was older, I understood the story more(and I paid closer attention to the drawings, even noticing that in the night after the store was closed, all the dolls had their eyes closed as opposed to their eyes being open during the day).

This teaches the lesson that every toy you buy for your kids doesn't have to be perfect. Kids and adults will appreciate this story(the adults moreso).

Everyone should know this lovely book!
Cordoroy is the perfect children's book. It is a gentle, sweet tale of a little bear in cordoroy overalls waiting to be purchased in a department store. A real little girl sees him and falls in love with him, but her mother says she doesn't have money to buy him and he's missing a button. After the store closes, all the toys with faces close their eyes except Cordoroy. Instead, he travels the department store searching for a button because he didn't know he was not perfect. He does not solve his problem. Cordoroy is back on the toy shelf the next morning. The little girl, Lisa returns to buy him. She takes him home, sews on a button, and provides him with his own little bed right beside hers. "I've always wanted a friend!" he says. This beautifully illustrated book has a simple text and huge appeal to anyone with a heart.

The World Would Be a Better Place With More Dogs Like Skip
"My Dog Skip" takes the reader back to a time (the 1940's) and a place (the Mississippi Delta) when things were much more simple than they are now: No computers, no video games, no 115 channels on cable TV. Just simple life as a kid, including adventures with your best friend, your dog. Morris describes his youth with his dog Skip as a simple, funny, and touching memory which we can all embrace. If you've ever owned a dog, you'll love reading Skip's adventures. If you have never had the privilege, you'll be strongly tempted to go out and buy or adopt your own Skip.

If you saw the film version of the book, understand that much of the movie was "Hollywood-ized." Even so, I think most readers will enjoy the book even more than the film.

Words cannot do this book justice
Willie Morris was one of America's finest 20th century writers, in the same category as William Faulkner. So it is no surprise that, since he wrote a dog book, it is the ultimate dog book ever.

Simply stated, MY DOG SKIP is his memoir of his love affair with his dog. Like so many little boys, especially only children, his relationship with his dog was one of the purest, strongest loves that any person can know.

In describing their great love, Morris inescapably also must describe his childhood in a small town of the American south, circa 1930. As a direct result of the lyricism of Morris' prose, this book then becomes a perfect snapshot of the slow, honest, rhythms of life in towns like his.

The book ends as all these stories do. A tribute, once again, to Willie's skill is that the inevitable does not become maudlin.

The movie which was made from this story was extremely well-received. I had read that Mr. Morris had visited the set very shortly before his unexpected death, and that he had proclaimed himself pleased with the film. I am so glad that this gave him pleasure, because he has given so much pleasure to so many readers over the decades.

A Boy and His Dog...
What a wonderful book! Willie Morris is a wonderful storyteller and his re-telling of his childhood with his dog skip is just wonderful. He weaves a story that every pet lover and childhood pet owner can relate to. Willie is 9 years old when he gets Skip and they become inseperable. Skip is like a little brother to Willie who is an only child. Together they have many adventures in the Delta and spend so much time together. Skip is well known throughout the whole town and is pretty much treated like a little person.
The reader is transported back into the 40's with Willie and his dog. The imagery is so vivid that you really feel as if you are there. I love books set in this time period when things were so much simpler. Morris' story took me back to that time.
I very rarely cry at books, but I bawled at this one. It brought out so many of my childhood memories and I could hardly put it down. The adventures were wonderful, the scenery was vivid, and the characters are some that I will not forget for along time to come. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a little break from our fast paced world and visit Skip's!

Beatitudes are just platitudes, depending on the attitudes
This is the first book I've read by Willie Jolley and it will be the last. If "A Setback is a Setup for a Comeback" didn't repeat passages and themes from his previous book, it would be 40% smaller. If you take away the stories from other motivational & self-help authors that Jolley repeats in this book, take away another 30%. And if you take away every time he mentions the title in the book (repeated almost as a mantra), take away another 5%.

Cliches abound. Like my title for this review tries to convey, you just start shaking your head after reading a certain amountt and wonder if Jolley can write a page without a cliche or "snappy" saying.

To be fair, I did take some good things away from the book. And if he happens to highlight an approach to a life turnaround for you, then it's worth every penny.

So it gets 3 stars. Some good advice for me, but almost to the point of putting the book down for the reasons above.

Ten Stars if I could put them on here!
Willie Jolley blows my mind! What charisma and insight he shares in this and his other book! I found myself smiling, crying, feeling encouraged. Reading his writing is like having a long, friendly supportive letter, sprinkled with some excellent advice. I'm a HUGE Willie Jolley fan now, and I own both his books. They're terrific - and so clear and inspiring they will help anyone who reads them.

This book hits the mark! It exudes positivity!
In his follow up to his bestselling book "It Only Takes A Minute To Change Your Life", author and inspirational speaker Willie Jolley hits the mark! With sound suggestions for personal growth, his book exudes positivity. He reveals not only his own painful personal setbacks but presents examples of the trials experienced by the likes of Tina Turner, John Tavolta and Lee Iacocca on their paths to success. Drawing inspirtional quotes from such diverse sources as Tennyson, Les Brown, Plutarch and the Bible, he cements his appeal to a wide range of readers!"

Another Gary Soto hit!!!
Any controversy surrounding this book is misplaced. It is a well-written story that entices children to want to to read it and other books. Rarely is there such a fine blending between the words of the author and the pictures of the illustrator. My students love this book and read it again and again.

Two Thumbs Up
Chato's Kitchen is a magnificent book that can really attract the attention of young readers. The language that is being used and the way it is expressed truly makes it a great book. As one reads the book, there is never any part that becomes boring, infact it is fun to read all the way through. The amusing plot and story helps us understand it well. Gary Soto knows exactly what great literature is all about. I would really recommend this book to any person young or old, both will enjoy it!

A wonderful book that relates to the Hispanic culture.
I really think this book is great because there were so many things in the book that remind me of my life as I was growing up as a child. I really like the language that is used in the story because it entangles a little of the Bilingual language with English. I read this book to my students and it was a big hit with them. They read it over and over again every day. I asked some of them why they liked it so much and many of them responsded that they could relate to the story line in one way or another. The school that I teach at it predominantly Hispanic and so this book has really touched base with all of my students in one way or another. I hope that Gary Soto never quits writing these kinds of wonderful books!

A must-read for inspiration
Unlike most "religious" category books, this book lacks the preachy quality that causes most readers to not absorb the text. This book insightfully breaks down barriers between different religious beliefs and simply brings forth the universal belief in a higher power. The people that Larry King and Rabbi Katsof chose to interview are made more personable and are made more tangible through their everyday prayers, which are similar to ours, and their quest to be closer to God. This book would make a fabulous holiday gift that is sure to please a recipient of any religious background.

Simply Powerful
Mr. King delved into the foundation of Spirituality and Religion and made simple an otherwise complex and controversial issue. The book focuses on the individual and his or her communication with God, while setting aside religious beliefs. I would like to recommend to friends who are too formal about prayers and to those who maybe agnostic such as Larry King in his book.

Powerful Prayer a Must Read
Powerful Prayers is a Must Read Reading Powerful Prayers provides you amazingly simple examples of commuincating with God through personal everyday prayer. It opens the door to an otherwise complex arena of thought. The discussion between Larry King and Rabbi Katsof is sensitive and thought provoking. The interviews add incredible depth to the discussion. They also legitimize informal prayer, and the many different ways people have found to communicate with their respective spiritual beings. I recommend this book to everyone who is open to exlporing their individual communication with God. It is a must read. It has changed my entire understanding or paradigm in regards to my relationship with God outside of a house of worship.
