A great learning experience
The material is very moving and deep seated. I am not a deeply religious person, but this book has touched me. Elaine Stone presented facts about Mother Theresa of which the average person has no knowledge. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Virginia S. King, secretary NLAPW Inc, Cape Canaveral Branch

Elaine Murray Stone has a rare ability to bring Teresa alive
Elaine Murray Stone has the rare ability of bringing our saints and heroes to life. It is good to see her "Mother Teresa" living vividly in her pages, and so soon after that great saint's death. Perhaps we needed a princess and a saint, and how extra-ordinary that they died the same week. But Elaine Stone writes not about a dead saint, but a vibrantly living one, and in a style suited for both student and teacher. This is a beautifully crafted biography, and a needed one. It will be around for a long time. Madeliene L'Engle Newberry Award author

Dr. Stone's book does much to lead her readers to the saint
Dr. Stone's book does much to lead her readers to come and know the Mother Teresa of these qualities; a holiness that was rooted in joy, humility that was rooted in an openness to all God asks of her, and a humor that never allowed her to take herself too seriously. This book leads us through the journey of Mother Teresa's life when the dream of the young girl to be a missionary folds into "the pencil in God's hand" that comes to write God's loving signature on the minds and hearts of millions throughout much of the twentyth century. Father Michael Mannion, former chaplain of the Catholic University, Washington, D. C.

C.S.Lewis-Creator of Narnia
I have loved the narnia books all my life and found this new book very interesting because it told me about the authors childhood which made me feel that I knew him. The book is also a great romantic story about his friendship and then marriage to the author Joy Gresham.

Great Book
As an avid reader since childhood of the Chronicles of Narnia, I was thrilled to read this wonderful biography of C. S. Lewis. The author paints a detailed picture of his privileged childhood in Belfast, Ireland, followed by unhappy years at English boarding schools.
I enjoyed reading about his many years at Oxford Univeristy, first as a brilliant student and later as a professor. His touching romance with American author Joy Gresham and her tragic death touched my heart.
This is a wonderful book and I recommend it to adults and young people. Cathy Gustavson, retired professor

A New Age Dictionary!
This is a wonderful book for beginners and quite a referral guide for the old hand. So many "metaphysical" and "spiritual" words are now creeping into the main stream soceity, that I have even directed my teen son to it for content and information he needs in high school. Elaines book keeps it simple in her explanations as well. I always find simplicity essential. When I personally began my own spiritual path, I wish someone would have pointed me in the direction of this wonderful book. Now, I would love to see an issue for the year 2000!

Maximilian Kolbe: Saint of Auschwitz

A Good beginners guide to the saint's life and death
For those not familiar with the Story of maximilian Kolbe this book is an adequate if flawed start. Maximilian Kolbe was a Catholic priest/friar who voluntarly gave his life in Auschwitz, where he was imprisioned for speaking out against the Nazi regiem, so that a Jew may live. The man whom he died for ultimately did in fact survive Auchwitz and tell his Story. While the Story of Maximilian Kolbe is inspiring, tragic and ulitimatly uplifting I was a little disappointed at the way in which this book tells that Story. First of all this book is not a very in depth look at the life and times of Kolbe, it is written at about a sixth grade level, and often over states what should be painfully obvious to any adult reader with a basic knowledge in history of WWII. The other thing that I disliked about this book was the way in which it portrayed the faith of Max Kolbe. Maximilian Kolbe in this book is portrayed as being extremly Marian in his faith. Through out the book Mary and terms like "the Blessed mother" "our Blessed lady" "the mother of God" ect are used over and over again while Jesus is only mentioned by name a small number of times. While I have no doubt that Mary was an important part of his faith, (She was after all the one who offered him the crowns of purity and martyrdom ) I would like to belive that his faith was much more complete than portrayed in this book. Also as a Catholic I felt that this portrayal plays into the protestant sterotype of Mary worshoping Catholics. Mary by all means should be given her due both as a saint and as the mother of Jesus but should not be placed above Jesus himself. This book could due well in teaching Grade schoolers about Maximilian Kolbe, Auschwitz, the Nazi's as well as WWII but adults would due better with other more in depth books such as "Catholic Martys of the twetieth Century" by Robert Royal
