Extraordinary book
A wonderfully-written, powerful approach to self-realization. Two main resources have been helping me transform my consciousness and habits into a life of fullness and joy: this book and Pema Chodron's audiotape series, "Awakening Compassion." I recommend both unhesitatingly.

One of the Finest Self-Help Books Ever Written.
People have been writing manuals for transformation for millenia. One only needs to pick up a copy of the Dhammapada or the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali to find instructions for self-transformation that go back as far as civilized man. A trip to the bookstore can show you that this certainly hasn't changed- self-help books on the shelves today range from the practical ("Achieve Optimal Health in Eight Weeks!") to the unlikely ("Pick Winning Lotto Numbers Every Time!") to the downright wacky ("Awaken your Gerbil's Psychic Powers!"). Many of these books promise change and transformation in a short period of time... a few days or weeks. Instant enlightenment.

Michael Murphy and George Leonard have been watching and inspiring the human potential movement (the fountainhead for the "instant enlightenment" approach) for decades- in fact, they gave the movement it's name. And, in the four decades that have passed since Murphy founded his world-famous Esalen Institute, they've learned an important lesson: there is no quick fix. No instant moksha, no express nirvana, no overnight transformation. Real change takes years or decades of intensive work. To this end, they have founded a new kind of practice for a real new age: Integral Transformational Practice, or ITP- which is introduced in "The Life We Are Given".

ITP is not a seminar, it's not a weekend retreat. You have to be willing to give up, evolve, and let the chips fall where they may. Moreover, you have to be willing to engage in intensive practice over long periods of time- years, at least. Combining a set of physical exercises based upon akaido, tai chi, and yoga, an aerobic and weightlifting regimen, a simple vegetarian diet, meditation, affirmations, visualization, philosophical and spiritual study, and community work, ITP practitioners can make changes in their lives that they never thought possible. Physical changes, improvements in health and fitness, reversing diseases and age-related ailments, improving emotional health and learning ability, and attaining spiritual states of mind are all possible for a practitioner who is willing to work dilligently and intelligently at the practice. Whole new worlds of opportunity are availiable by living the balanced yet aggressively evolutionary lifestyle proposed in "The Life We Are Given".

Recommended as companion volumes to tLwaG are Ken Wilber's "Sex, Ecology, Spirituality" (an important text on evolutionary psychology and philosophy with a focus on transformation), George Leonard's "Mastery", and Michael Murphy's "The Future of the Body". They are all excellent guides to the integral paradigm.

Good luck, and good journeys!

proof is in the pudding
There are lots of books out there that offer hope for genuine transformation. This is one that actually works, because it doesn't pretend that transformation is instantaneous, easy, or without some physical and mental work. However, by applying some discipline, the changes that are possible by following the methods described in "The Life We Are Given" are truly astounding. One way to confirm this without reading anything is simply by being in Leonard's presence. He radiates an extraordinary, palpable vitality that just can't be faked.

Canterbury Marriage Tales : A Reader-Friendly Edition
Published in Paperback by Conal & Gavin Press (15 May, 2000)
Authors: Geoffrey Chaucer and Michael Murphy
Amazon base price: $11.95
Used price: $7.17

Aptly editeed and translated into modern spellings
With the original Chaucerian "Old English" aptly editeed and translated into modern spellings by Michael Murphy, Canterbury Marriage Tales: A Reader-Friendly Edition presents four of Geoffrey Chaucer's well-known, racy stories of love and marriage gone awry. In this edition, however, the sometimes confusing Old English of Chaucer's day has been made reader-friendly with modern spelling and numerous notes and references. Such meticulous annotation is especially helpful considering that the four stories in this volume - The Wife of Bath, The Clerk, The Merchant, and the Franklin - are all written in lyrical verse. Ribald, lusty, yet often thought-provoking, perhaps the true soul of Chaucer's work is best summed up in his own words: Love will not be constrained by mastery. When mastery comes, the god of love, anonm beateth his wings, and farewell, he is gone! Canterbury Marriage Tales is a strongly recommended addition to Chaucerian Studies reading lists and literary collections.

A "must" for all Chaucer students and enthusiasts
Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" has long been acclaimed one of the earliest classics of the English language. His original text has been converted to modern spellings and aptly edited by Michael Murphy. Readers are treated to informative articles on the language of this edition, a brief life of Chaucer, and a short note on how the text may be read. The Canterbury Marriage Tales presents The General Prologue (Beginning and End); the continues with the portrait, prologue and tale of "The Wife Of Bath"; "The Clerk"; "The Merchant"; and "The Franklin". Canterbury Marriage Tales is a "must" for all Chaucer students and enthusiasts!

A guide for those on the path
This book is amazing. If you find yourself on "the path," this is a must read.

Jacob Atabet by Micheal Murphy
This brief book combines Mysticism, Art, Genetic Manipulation, Quantum Theory and Life-Extension. Its set in the post-LSD San Francisco Bay-Area.

Our lead character is investigating an event which took place in a church he briefly rested in. This leads to denials on the part of the priest and attendees as to what really happened. The identity of the individual seems to be all over the map from a young healthy male to an aged man.

Based on a near identity supplied by the priest, a very intense, laid back but strange cast of characters emerges. These individuals are the clearing house or grades of entry to the introduction to Jacob.

Jacobs art is ethereal, primitive and psychedelic. The art is reminiscent of photo-microscopy of amebas and one celled animals. Jacobs art also has a transforming effect upon certain individuals, hence his odd assortment of acquaintances. They're not a cult following or his keepers, but are his protectors.

Michael Murphy also wrote "Golf in The Kingdom", a mystical journey through the sport of golf. His "7 Laws of Money" should be required reading in all high schools. Its a "Heroes' Journey" or guidebook on money and finance.

As opposed to your standard sci-fi or speculative fiction, Jacob Atabet crosses boundaries of science, literal self-renewal and re-invention from the parallel worlds of mysticism and the micro/macro-cosmos.

Physicist Neils Bohr had a Yin-Yang symbol in the center of his family crest, a Yantric lotus and a manta on the outer border. The family crest of a physicist? Micheal Murphy melds these 2 seemingly opposing worlds into one where birth, creation and accountability all merge within ourselves and is reflected in our waking world.

I would like to see this in print not only to replace what has recently gotten lost, but to make it available to persons I always reccommend this book to.

A beautiful gift for every parent
I found this book to be a wonderful read. It's not just humorous and wise, but I found that I could re-read it six months later and see new things as my own children grew older. The author has a warm way of communicating that makes this book one you'll want to keep for a long, long time.

Is a father's role essential?
In an interview with Bodywise, Dr. Murphy said "We are at the most powerful and critical point of human history as the traditional roles of men and women are changing. For the first time in human history, we have a choice... Fathers are no longer necessary to the biological creation of a child; the result is a change in the constitution of the family as never before." Dr. Murphy goes on to say that "Studies show that many children in the US will have lost their father by a child's eighteenth birthday. What does this mean to our society's future? And is a father's role essential to the healthy development of a child and if so how? Research shows that children perceive their fathers as a mixture of love and fear. That fear is translated into a sense of safety against risks in the world. So as the child grows into adulthood, he has a postive sense of himself via a role model and can feel safe. Studies have shown that this feeling of security is directly to violence in adulthood". This title is for all fathers who devote and give of themselves to their children. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life between career and modern life's demands, it's easy to lose focus or maintain a sense of humor on what raising a child is truly all about; reading Popsicle Fish will certainly change that even for but a few peaceful moments. Dr. Murphy, a father to 3 children: his own child, a step-child, and an adopted son - he takes us out of 'our reality' and shows us how to look at life and its many events through the eyes and heart of a child. Don't even think about reading this title in one sitting - indulge yourself and read the 3 page chapters whenever you need a "reality check" on how vital your contribution as a father really means to your child and how it the powerful impact that will last a lifetime.

Excellent Essays by Forward Thinking Women of our Time
This book made me glad to be a woman. In so many ways our society says women are defective. This book is a wonderful collection of essays by some of the brightest, most articulate women. It has wonderful language from so many authors affirming women and affirming how we can change the world. I particularly enjoyed Cheri Huber, Riane Eisler, Brooke Medicine Eagle, Barbara Marx Hubbard, and all the authors have something important to say. The listing of on-line resources is terrific. The book is very optimistic (and the on-line resources even more so) about the possibility of creating a good future.

The MST3K INCOMPLETE Episode Guide
Now, don't get me wrong. I love this book, the copy I have is all ragged, the pages are falling out, because it's like "It's a Small World" ride in Disney World -- there's so much in it to see you can't go through it once. But the downside is, it only half-heartedly covers the KTMA episodes (actually some of my favorites are from there Phase IV, and some of the first MSTings of the Gamera movies), and being written while season Seven was in the planning stages, it stops there, giving it the same half-hearted treatment as the KTMA's.Yes the book is in depth for season's one thru six giving all of the short and movie summaries, as well as the host segment rundown and reflections on each episode. IT IS A GREAT READ, but still incomplete. As enjoyable and highly rated as it is, I think the guys should do a revised version covering all eleven seasons (yes boys and girls, the boys at Best Brains don't consider the KTMA's as a season, or if they do break down and admit it, they call it Season Zero).Yes I enjoy "The MST3K Amazing Colossal Episode Guide", I'd give it two thumbs up (if my thumbs were working), and would reccomend it to anybody who even has a vague intrest in the series, but I'll also note the fact that something is missing.

Hilarious summaries of hilarious shows.
First off, I would like to say that MST3K was the most brilliant, hilarious and creative show ever produced. They were snubbed by TV Guide in their top 50 shows of all time article.
Now on to the book:
This book has summaries and memories of all the episodes form seasons 1 though 6, the hayday of the show. The summaries of the films themselves rival the actual show for laughter value. Whether the synopsis was written by Mike (who I think is one of the funniest writers on the planet), Trace, Mary Jo, Kevin or Paul, they will make you heave with gutteral belly laughs. The memories of each episode are also very funny, and beyond that, pretty informative.
The book also features a ton of other things, such as the story behind the creation of the series, answers to the top 50 questions asked, the making of the MST3K movie and much, much more.
The only complaint I have about this book is that it only goes up to season 6. Although I think the show never regained the edge and hilarity of the the Comdey Central era shows (specifically seasons 4-7), I would still love to have a companion volume that takes care of seasons 7-10 and the movie.

I highly recommend this book for all MSTies out there.

As Seen On TV!
Well at least it was back when Mystery Science Theater 3000 was in its sixth season.

This is THE book for any fan of MST3K whether you became a fan of the show during its early days at the local station in Minneapolis, or just found it on the Sci-Fi channel during the final reruns. The book offers a peek into all of the 120 episodes that can only be seen on a fan's tape. Each episode area has descriptions of the actual movie, all of the segments, and one of the writers reflects on the episode. In fact the style of how each episode is described in the book was so much loved by the fans that the cast continued to describe the 8th, 9th, and last season at Scifi.com. It also chronicles the conception and birth of a revolutionary comedy.

Running through the book are poems, reflection, and suggestions on how to discuss "Your Area" which will leave your sides in pain. In fact the introductions of the book are enough to rip out a few stitches so be careful.

Even if you do not really care about all of the old episodes that you may never seen, the reflection and other writing in this book are enough of a reason to buy this book. Trust me.

blueprints in psychiatry (blue prints series)
very short and concise book for psychiatry. covers all the high yield material for the boards.has got some good tables. the best thing about this book is it is just about 96 pages and makes it very easy to read.for step2 and step3 psychiatry this book will be of great help.

a great resource
I read this book the day before starting my 3rd year psychiatry clerkship. It was amazing and made my life so much easier. You can easily read this book in an afternoon and get a great view of psychiatry as a whole. Its strength is its brevity and readability, while not sacrificing much in the way of actual content. A great book for medical students.

Excellent review for wards and Step 2
This book helped me do quite well on Step 2. It is both concise and relevant. It covers the essentials with review-level depth; if you're looking for a core textbook, this ain't it. Its only drawback is the price per page ratio.
