Sheds light on Human Behavior
As someone from a a profession where problem solving is a core ability, I was amazed from chapter to chapter how the members of the Garbage Project went about their endeavors to successful results. They truly show how something so ubiquitous(garbage) can contain so much information about our lives and our behaviors.

The men and women involved in this research project open the bag on the realities of this human behavior to shed light on how we act as consumers and as members of society in general. Our political tendencies are also exposed in investigating how groups endeavor to address the issue of solid waste disposal, often to unbelievable results, totally contrary to the desired end goal.

I wholeheartedly agree with some other reviewers in that this should be required reading for anyone interested in environmental issues, from the simplest aluminum can collector to the most active environmentalists.

This is billed as an archaeology book, but I would call it more accurately an environmental/psycological/science read, never very technical, often entertaining and always eye-opening.

Informative, Fascinating, Easy to Read
Rubbish should be required reading for anybody who things he/she cares about environmentalal issues. Until reading the book, I would have never guessed all the facts--yes, hard, cold facts--documented in its pages. Garbage disposal is the ultimate out-of-sight-out-of-mind issue in our hurried consumer culture. So much of our opinions on garbage comes from an uninformed media (i.e. the ridiculously high estimates of landfill space taken up by disposal diapers). People act, lobby and debate based on knowledge that, as the book shows, is usually false.

As wasteful as we are, the authors present interesting comparisons of American families and Mexican families. The results will surprise you, to say the least. Also well presented are rational comments on the always present issue of recycling.

In all, this is a fascinating book. Like all great book of this nature, it is scientific but an easy read. Highly recommended!

The Dao of garbage...
This is a remarkable book. Using a scientific approach to rubbish, a team of archaeologists from the University of Arizona dive into the layers of what we throw away and reveal more about us then we can even begin imagine.

Every page unfolds an interesting tidbit of trivia, an astouding insight into those things that divide human beings socioeconomically, and those quirky little things we do, quite often un- or sub-consciously.

Who would have imagined rubbish could be so interesting and, oddly enough, so wonderful? You'll never be able to look at your trash, or your neighbor's, the same way again.

Simultaneously exciting and disturbing...
There is plenty in this book that will rile people up. Some passages will have you shouting, "Yes!" and triumphantly pumping your fist. You will be so saddened by others that you are almost nauseated. You'll hate and despise other portions. Whichever you're in the midst of, you'll be thinking. And, that's what this book is...thought provoking. It opens up the field of feminist theology for the lay(wo)man. It is a thorough introductory work that leaves you eager to explore further. You'll be introduced to leaders in the field of feminist theology and their theories. You'll see Bible passages in a way you'd never quite read them before. Be prepared to scribble voluminous notes in the margins. An excellent bibliography will start you off on your bookcase additions and interlibrary loan requests.

This book takes a crowbar to your mind and rips it wide open. And that is a potent definition of a good book... You may love this book, or you might not like it at all -- But you'll be forced to respect it and it's place in religious reading. Highest recommendation...

Intelligent and Entertaining
Murphy's excellently researched book is not only a wealth of information, but an immensely enjoyable read. He writes in a language that entices one to it, keeping us interested at all times. He covers a multitude of issues concering women and the Bible and introduces us to many fasincating women and their life's work, eloquently illustrating their personalities, struggles and achievements. Murphy obviously did his homework and is obviously passionately interested in these issues. He covers it all, offering possibilities, theories, facts and hopes. As well as this he sets the newcomer on an enlightening path by giving many wonderful references and booktitles to search for. I strongly recommend this book to all readers. It is a consise, well written and very interesting read.

Must reading for anyone interested in the Bible!
Anyone interested in the Biblical message should read The Word According to Eve, which offers new, heartening perspectives for us all, women and men alike. A perfect companion to this book is Soul Satisfaction by Elizabeth Rankin Geitz, a meditation book for women who know that they too, are created in the image of God. We need more books like these!

Best ROI in 2000!
I purchased James Murphy's book in 2000, we just completed our financials and I am pleased to report that we doubled our revenues. We contribute this increase to a single statement we found in the book, Business is Combat. "All of our resources in the Air Force are alligned like a shaft of a spear, pushing the "pointy end forward". We did that in our business and the results were dramatic. We have become great planners, we execute efficently and we now debrief, all of this we learned from Mr. Murphy's book. I keep it on my desk and refer to it often because it makes us money.

A Book About Getting Things Done
Many business books are long on theory, but short on providing any insight about actually executing. And face it, theories come and go, but getting things done is never out of style.

James Murphy has written a book about getting things done. His style is informal and accessible ... he writes as if he's sitting across the table talking to you. And he remains focused on his message: the planning, execution and debriefing required to build a successful business or organization.

Getting into this book requires the reader to accept that the skills taught to fighter pilots apply to business. The amazing thing is that they actually do. I've not received this training, but I have been in business for a long time. And the information imparted in this book can help anyone run a business better. From handling 'task saturation' to staying focused, this book provides useful insights in an entertaining way.

If you're looking for a book on the latest theory on business, skip "Business is Combat." If you want to pick up some ideas you can start using immediately to get things done, I highly recommend it.

Tactics to put into action right away!
Jim Murphy's book is dead on. As an entrepreneur, one can tend to overlook planning on a day to day scale... this book brings the necessity of a plan back to the center of your business. The best thing you can do for your business or life... finally something that you can read and then put into action RIGHT AWAY. Just what I needed.
