Thoroughly enjoyed the story, beautifully produced tape.
We have just listened to the audio book of "Stickeen" produced by Mara Purl and thoroughly enjoyed the story! I have already told my daughter and she is anxiously waiting for my next "care package," because I told her I would be sure to enclose the tape of "Stickeen" so she can enjoy it also. The story was wonderful and it was so beautifully produced with music and sound effects. I will look for some of Muir's other stories to enjoy, especially if Haven Books Audio does some more.

Engaging, captivating and heart wrenching!
I found the audio tape to be a great source of entertainment. My imagination was captivated. It's a great source of family entertainment, personal journey and pure fun.

Great entertainment when you're driving.
Our family loves to travel by car. In a huge state like Alaska, there's plenty to see, but not much to listen to on the radio, as stations are few and far between. One of the best things we listened to on our trip was "Stickeen," the remarkable dog story by John Muir. We loved Lee Salisbury's voice, and the beautiful music on the tape. This was an hour that flew by, and a few dollars well-spent. We're sending copies to all our relatives.

A fuller understanding of the tremendous war effort
The Human Tradition In The World War II Era is an informative collection of brief biographical sketches presenting the American experience during the second world war by examining the conflict through the ordeals of a broad array of men and women. Here are the stories of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who served in the European and pacific theaters. The Human Tradition In The World War II Era is divided into three major sections: The Home Front; The Government; and The Sharp End. Readers will appreciate a fuller understanding of the tremendous war effort mounted by the Americas, and gain a deeper sense of the war's profound impact on American society at large, and the lives of individuals both in the field and at home. This is very highly recommended, compelling, instructive reading for students of 20th century American history, culture, and participation in World War II.

A good quick reference book
For the Battleship historian, this is a good book for quick reference to the four IOWA class Battleships. Actually, as an engineering type that was very closely involved with the 1980's reactivations of the ships, I found the appendices of more value than the historical text. But that is not meant to be demeaning. Mr. Muir's caption of a picture of the NEW JERSEY firing a broadside of her 16 inch guns is one of the only truthful statements ever made as to whether a full broadside would push a 57,000 ton ship sideways or not. They do NOT. Believe me. I have been aboard them during full broadside firings and those great grey ladies don't move an inch. Appendix B is also one of the few items published that note the fact that 18 inch guns were also considered for the class as well as a longer barreled, but heavier, version of the 16 inchers finally mounted. Appendix C are charts, diagrams and photos taken directly out of OP 769. Where do these civilian authors get their hands on these manuals? I had a hard enough time keeping one hidden under my desk during the reactivation era of the 1980's. I would not class this book as a "coffee table" book, but as one that meets a middle ground between a technical text and an historical log. In any case, it's a handy book for a Naval historian to have in his library. I would like to see a later revision of this book that includes the IOWAs up to their premature (my personal opinion) inactivation. And definetly in hard cover vs. soft cover.
