Rivetting story, beautiful pictures!
Marissa Moss has done it again! In HANNAH'S JOURNAL, as in her other historical diaries, Moss expertly braids fascinating, factual detail with a child's personal story. Hannah's perceptive, poignant voice gives the account of her travels from Lithuania to New York City total freshness and immediacy. I can think of no more enjoyable way to teach history -- the conditions on board a ship in "steerage," the ordeal of Ellis Island, the terrifying, exhilerating experience of starting life in a new country and world. Hannah's (aka Moss') beautifully executed watercolors and drawings also bring Hannah's journey and journal to life. This book is a gem.

A young girl's diary of her journey to America in 1901.
Ten-year-old Hannah is a young Jewish girl living with her mother, father, and six brothers in a small Russian shetl in 1901. For her birthday, Hannah is given a journal. She writes witty observations of the world around her and draws clever pictures in the margins. After a violent attack on the Jews in the village, Hannah's parents decide that she should use her dead cousin's never used ticket to America. So with her other cousin, fourteen-year-old Esther, Hannah boards a train for the port and Hamburg, and then a boat for the voyage across the sea. In the face of difficult conditions, Hannah holds on to her dreams of building a better life in America and getting a real education. Highly reccomended if you enjoyed the previous two books in this series, Young American Voices, which is like a younger version of the Dear America series.

Must have for classroom teachers
This book addresses issues of self esteem, spontaneous creativity and individuality. If you have students afraid to make a mistake, this is a great 'go with the flow' example. Regina worries about messing up her artwork, and in the end realizes that sometimes 'mistakes' lead to discoveries.

Regina is a character any child or adult could relate to.
As an elementary art teacher, this book is a wonderful addition to my classroom. On the first day of school, I read this story to all my students. The book deals with children's worries about making mistakes, coming up with ideas, and drawing as well as their classmates, as well as what on earth they will do when an idea does not work out. It teaches a valuable lesson: we all make mistakes... instead of getting upset, we can use our creativity to come up with new ideas and solutions just like Regina did

I was born about 15 years too late.
I needed these books when I was a young girl! But the fact that I'm an adult can't keep me from reading these books. I've never seen an Amelia book that I wouldn't give five stars.

I recently bought this book as a Christmas present for a girl. I also purchased a blank b/w composition notebook and a packet of pens to put with it. Moss's illustrations are hilarious and thoughtful as usual. One set of pages I especially liked was a list of sounds that Amelia tries to explain to the deaf friend she has made (ie. a cat purring is like a sweater right out of the dryer). Very cute.

THE BEST AMELIA BOOK EVER!
In this book, Amelia really reminds me of myself when I ever find something I want to buy but then later think why I ever bought it! This book is great for people who want to earn money and then decide which is actually something you want to spend it on. All the Amelia's Notebooks were great, but this is the best ever!

Loved this Book!
Just like Marissa Moss' "Amelia" books, this was a hand-written, journal-style book, with lots of pictures. It is the journal of ten-year-old Rachel, who travels with her family of pioneers from Illinois to California in search of a better place to live. In her journal, she records the trip and there are many details! It has humor thrown in, great pictures, and a nice journal format. I've enjoyed reading this book, and I can't wait to read all of Marissa Moss' other historical journals.

An Adventure...
This book was quite interesting. It is a story of a young girl, Rachel who is traveling by covered wagon from Illinois to California with her family in the 1850's. She keeps a journal/scrapbook of their adventures/disasters. Her illustrations or "doodles" in this journal were very well done. They clearly defined a great deal of what life was like for any family back then and the courage that they had in order to seek what they thought was going to "better" their way of living.

It's like an old, handwritten journal!
Moss brings to this book a thoroughly delightful 'hand written' format along with marginal and textual illustrations to dramatize the effect that it is the actual journal of Rachel, a young girl who records her thoughts and observations along the trail. This book should be on the shelves of any family whose proud heritage goes back to those who ventured West to take up roots in the Great American frontier of the nineteenth century. Moss draws her readers into an excitement filled, seven month journey along the famed Oregon trail. The subject has enormous appeal to a wide range of young readers, especially when we approach the years 2004 - 2006, the 200th anniversary of the famed corps of discovery, which started the Westward movement.
Such a book would be a keepsake to pass on to succeeding generations, who often times fail to completely grasp the hardships ancestors had to endure so that they could have a more comfortable life. Part of the author's extensive research included examinations of the unpublished journals collection, covering the years 1846 through 1868, forming part of the collection of Bancroft Library at the University of California at Berkeley.
She succeeded admirably in accomplishing her goal to weave in documented episodes of travel and its dangers along the famed Oregon trail. And others will surely get the flavor of the pioneer spirit within the pages of this truly wonderful keepsake.

Absolutely Fantatic
Of all the Amelia book I read, and loved,I thought that this book was the best of th seiries yet. It is about when Nadia's dad is in a car crash, and Amelia is searching for her own dad. Thy cummunicate through letters. I loved the real letters that you can open and read. I also like how the plot could follow, even through letters. I have already read this book 4 times (and I know I will read it more), and I got it only one day ago. You should definately read this book.

Marissa Moss and Amelia are the coolest!!!
Who thought Marissa Moss and her alter ego Amelia could get any better?!!?

By the end of the book you are hoping that Amelia's dad is as cool as she is, after all he did name her after Amelia Earhart!

Moss is definitely in touch with her inner child, I hope this series goes on for years, I can't wait to see Amelia's teen years!

Great Series of Books
My 10 year old granddaughter LOVES these books! I always encourage her to read and to be interested in books, so I bought her this one and a couple of others, and when I told her there were even more in the "Amelia" series, her eyes lit up and we went to the store and bought them all. This is a great one because it's "interactive" in that it contains actual letters the kids can remove from the envelope and read.
