Perverted Superheroes Save the Day!
This book rocks. I laughed so hard I peed my pants. Luckily there's a guide to stain and stink removals in here.
With helpful advice from a slew of experts in law, psychology, health and, yes, textiles, Moser and Hardy take on a parade of dilemmas. Mysterious itches, potential stalkers and faulty vibrators are reduced to manageable proportions. Practical guides to condoms, menstruation, genital shaving and other less urgent concerns round out this collection of handy hints. James Kochalka adds to the merriment with some mighty fine illustrations.
My advice is to read this book before you need it. The problems are listed randomly, and with no index you have to flip through to find your particular solution. Related topics are cross-referenced for your convenience. Hopefully, you'll never need this book. So, just pass it around at a party and take turns reading aloud, laughing at the poignant foibles of mankind.

Light book about some not-so-funny problems
This book takes numerous predicaments that any of us might find ourselves in with no real idea how to get out of them and offers no-nonsense advice. Whether it's the dog that gets a little "too territorial" toward you, dealing with the authorities in the event of a noise complaint when you and your partner are doing SM, having your kids walk in on you while you're having sex or walking in on him or her having sex, or dealing with an emotionally unstable person you've brought home to "play" with, it gives good advice and solutions on how to deal with the issue at hand.

I really liked the section on shaving your or your partners genitals, and most importantly (for we men), a section about menstruation. Damn I could have used this book 20 years ago! This book may not be the greatest alterntive lifestyle book in the history of mankind, but it still is very handy to have around, because one never knows when a "sex disaster" will strike.

A slow and safe approach for those frighten ...
of the health care system because of their sexuality. Now, I've never been one to not go to a doctor because of my sexuality -- I just don't like doctors period. But I always get an annual from my Gyn and I'm very upfront with my sexual choices -- I figure I'm paying, she can listen and give me the best information. Others however are not as comfortable and thus they miss those very necessary check ups. Now I don't think that the doctor should be someone's primary source of information about bdsm, but about general and specific health questions, that is their job. Doctor Moser gives two audiences reassurance that to be honest about your sexuality in relationship to doctors is a necessary thing: the lay public or consumers and the health care providers. I'm not sure that the two audiences in one book was the best approach -- I found the "providers" sections a bit dull to read but I think the "providers" can gain insight from the "consumers" section. The overall message of the books is simple: you are ultimately responsible for your well-being, this means getting your physical and emotional health tended to on a regular basis. Trust me, someone with experience in the scene, you are doing yourself a favor by seeing your doctor and you are performing a necessary task if you want to protect and care for your partners. Moser's book will help you overcome your concerns and reclaim your rights as a consumer and a human being.

Excellent source for providers and sexual minorities
This book is a really outstanding source for doctors, counselors, therapists, as well as patients/clients who have experienced difficulties communicating their sexual problems to their health care provider. Moser's unique education (Phd in sexology as well as a MD), vast research experience, and knowledge in sexual minorities make him the most qualified individual in the field to write this book. The text is short and sweet, to the point, informative, and draws upon Moser's experience as a physician specializing in sexual medicine. I felt the dual nature of the book (for providers and patients) was useful because it enables everyone to ponder both aspects of the interaction. His recommendations explain how to take control of your health care situation, including what is necessary and what is not. Providers will find this book useful and aid them in developing nonjudgmental techniques with their patients. The explanation of the nature of health care coverage is also informative. Overall, I highly recommend this book. As a human sexuality counselor/educator I can appreciate Moser's dedication to the field.

Wonderful Sex-Positive Health Resource
Several times I have struggled with seeing a doctor about a health-related problem because it might mean I'd have to disclose information about my sexuality. This book tells you how to do so in an informed and calm manner.

Charles IMHO is a hero for writing this book. Not only is there information for the patient on dealing with a doctor's concern about your "alternative lifestyle," (ie the section called "For Consumers") and any related health concerns but also a section for Health care workers near the end of the book (the section called "For Practioners").

Buy this book both for yourself AND for your doctor!

Good intro but a bit overwhelming for newbies
This book is a both a clinical investigation of BDSM and an insider's view of how BDSM functions and serves those who engage in the practices. There are not "how-to" sections nor fiction in this book but observations of reallife BDSM that are attempted to be turned into "rules" about the subculture. Be careful, you are as likely to agree as to disagree with some of the conclusions reached but it will get you thinking. It is not, however, the best book to use if you are trying to introduce your partner to the scene -- it best serves those interested in a more clinical study of BDSM.

Compassionate & Re-assuring
This book will affirm all your feelings and fantasies. Thoughtful and well spoken on the BDSM community covers a vast wealth of lifestyle related areas.

Review of "Bound to Be Free"
The book, "Bound to Be Free" by Moser and Madeson is, quite simply, the best book I've ever read about the world of S&M.
Coauthored by a sexologist and an SM practitioner, it is scientifically sound and authoritative. We learn what SMers do, how they do it, and most importantly, why they do it.
How a major sexual lifestyle that has flourished throughout human history has remained hidden and been so misunderstood is a real mystery.
This book goes a long way to demystify what, in responsible hands, is a loving and exciting sexual life-choice.
This book would be terrific for those interested in S&M for themselves, for students interested in learning about SM, for social scientists wanting to understand SM, and for parents and friends who need to understand why their loved one is doing SM.
