Morton: ahead of his time
Morton is readable and approachable...until you come upon his allegorical poetry. Dr. Jack Dempsey has unlocked the dense stanzas of Morton. I first encountered Morton years ago and dismissed him as did almost every major New England historian. Not Dempsey. Through his scholarship 'mine eyes have been opened'. Morton loved New England in a very modern sense. His relationship to the Indians and the environment are worth studying. Morton was trained in Latin and understood the mythological figures. Morton related those ancient figures to the circumstances of the 1620's and 1630's. Morton stands in stark contrast to his neighbors twenty five miles away: the Pilgrims at New Plimoth. Adventure, Compassion, Courage...it is all there. Bravo Jack Dempsey!

Provocative and informative
Thomas Morton's life and influence on early America is under appreciated. In a very entertaining section of the book Dempsey reveals how Morton has been received during the course of our history.Dempsey brings to life the ebullient, prickly, roguish character that Morton was.I learned a great deal about the politics of colonial religious life especially as it effected Native Americans. Of course this influence is still with us today and Dempsey's exegesis on this subject is powerful and persuasive. This book is scholarly but also lots of naughty fun.

The Music of Morton Feldman

Good compendium of things missed
Since his death in 1988, there has been no shortage of interest in Morton Feldman. While alive there was a small but devoted following. The Brits loved the utter beauty, and simplicity of his work, Composers Howard Skempton, Cornelius Cardew, even the improv ensemble AMM speak deeply of Feldman's influence. With this collection of analytical investigations the rigours of academia as well now are making, staking a claim. And that's illuminating because the Feldman aesthetic is the direct opposite of someone the demeanor of Elliot Carter. But herein all the creative periods in Feldman's life are exposed with ample analytical tools of graphic renderings. Here John Welsh discusses 'Projection 1' a modest cello solo notated on graph paper, considered at the time of writing 1950, an experimental piece and something gleaned from John Cage I suspect. Feldman to my mind never had that kind of aesthetic voice for innovation. His concern was always in the aesthetic object, its attenuation, shape, its design and process, as opposed to Cage where the aesthtic object was a by=product of a larger process, hence it fell or stood, depending on the gifts and vision of the performers. Venturing forward, an important contribution to piano literature is discussed by Paula Kopstick Ames, a work modestly titled 'Piano" from 1977, a 20 minute work where we begin to see Feldman's interest in large scale durational values . And if something is missing here it is an appraisal of these massivly long works like the String Quartet, that Kronos had premiered, or 'Triadic Memories',or 'Cryppled Symmetry', or 'For Christian Wolff' a four hour work for flute and piano. For John Cage(1982) is well rendered with structural definitions and charts which mark its divisions. When you see these divisions its odd how simple it is, you always think an analysis will preserve the complexity we hear, or didn't hear or discover a complexity to exhibit the visual side of analysis, for let's face, this kind of academia work is an end in itself. I know of no performers of this music who consult analyses prior to their performative work, Like wise Elliot Carter. The ultimate highlight here is the inclusion of three essays by Mr. Feldman himself. He was a gifted orator, and verbal communicator. He had a gift for interdiscipline- like approach, where he interjects concepts from Mondrian,Tolstoi, Henri Bergmann, something now we take for granted. 'The Anxiety of Art', is an essay and position statement, on that the American Revolution, in art that is, the Pollock, Abstract Expressionist Revolution which rendered New York the art world center was devoid of bloodshed, hence no banners, and the word of subversion is only now coming through. This book is one example of that revolution.

very nice book on Australasian fossils
For those interested in photographs of fossils found mainly in Australia from the Paleozoic through the Cenozoic (along with a few from Antarctica), then this is the book for you. Crisp high quality photographs of vertebrate fossils are provided, everything from the hindlimb of Dromornis stirtoni to the top view of the skull of Leaellynasaura to numerous fish fossils. The primary focus appears to be on dinosaurs, though extinct mammals are well covered as well.

Accompanying the photographs are short articles detailing various aspects of the region's history, such as extinction of Australia's Quarternary megafauna, the floodplain faunas of the Great Southern Rift Valley of the Early Cretaceous, the role the increasing aridity of post-Miocene Australia played in evolution, and the fauna of the Gogo Reef. Longer articles deal with the basic geologic and paleontological history of Gondwana, the history of research there, and the role of Gondwana in the global context of worldwide evolution of animals. Numerous photographs of wildlife today accompany discussions of the unique biogeography of Australia and the role isolation has played in the development of the organisms there.

A beautiful coffee-table book, I hold from giving five stars for two reasons. One, the price is fairly high; though a really nice book to own, it may be out of the price range for many, or at least more than they really want to pay. Two, though the numerous photographs of fossils in the book are really high quality, I think the book could have benefitted from more artists' illustrations of the animals and their environment in life. Though a few nice ones are included, several more could have really added to the value and popular appeal of this book. Many of the extinct fauna of Gondwana are bizarre and fascinating, particularly some of the extinct marsupial megafauna, and it would have been nice to see more illustrations of how they looked in life. All in all though a really well done book.

another time-trip to the past
I compared the book Walking with Dinosaurs to a time machine. Well, here's another one. Wildlife of Gondwana is composed with love and devotion to the field of Paleontology. It is a momentous feeling to relive the evolution of our planet's surface leading to Gondwana and Laurasia and stunning to watch how vertebrate species diverged to fill all the ecological niches of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. A must for the dino lovers but also gives a fresh insight to other vertebrates that were contemporaries of the giant lizards. I hope there will once be a Wildlife of Laurasia, too.

Great book
This book centers on the prehistoric animals of Australia. It starts at the Ordovician period and even includes a chapter on living animals of Australia. Also it talks about the history of paleontology on Australia. This book has a simple vocabulary and thus can be enjoyed anyone who have an interest in prehistoric life. It has many colored pictures that show fossils and recreations of animals. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in paleontology. Also I recommend the book "The flowering of Gondwana", that talks about the paleobotany of Australia.

BEST OF CLASS
As a senior analyst at a prominent Wall Street firm, I found this book extremely helpful in advising my Fortune 500 clients on their valuation strategies. The interactive CD demonstrates that the author does not only have the powerful tools of knowledge and insight, but offers cutting edge technology that helps the reader put insightful words into immediate action. This highly acclaimed book provides extremely useful techniques for senior managers whose ultimate goal is to maximize shareholder value.

Real Options Made Practical
Mort Glantz has written a very practical and helpful book tohelp managers apply modern techniques of finance to real lifesituations. The book is excellent value for money because of itsdemystifying discussions and step by step application of all those socalled sophisticated analytical techniques we hear about but areafraid to use. For example, we hear a lot said about using optionpricing theory to project analysis and capital budgeting."Scientific Financial Management" takes this theory andapplies it to project assessment using real option theory in a valueenhancing way. The book not only takes you step by step through thetheory but also includes software to help apply it from the verybeginning. Now the manager who was just absorbing the implications ofdiscounted cash flow analysis can find easy ways to use real optionstechniques in assessing investment decisions plus other sophisticatedtechniques such as monte carlo simulation. The combination ofpractical handbook and application software is a unique opportunityfor any financial manager wanting to close knowledge gaps but alsoimprove the decision making process in assessing capital budget andproject risk.

Utter Brilliance!
This text provides the tools necessary to make an informed decision as a member of the financial senior management team. The most valuable element of the book is its current and future approach to valuation. The modeling techniques allow the reader to properly access and implement innovative methods for proper and precise valuation. Thank you Mr. Glantz for making me look smarter to my boss and other senior members of my large capitalization company.

The Fabulous Jorney of Life
The Fabulous Journey of Life

" Whoever pulleth out this sword from stone and anvil is the right-wise king of all England" and so, this begins the great legend of King Arthur. In this page turning book, The Knights of the Round Table by: Enid Blyton, readers find various stages of excitement. Many of these exciting points are found in the story, "Sir Galahad and the Quest of the Holy Grail." One of the exciting parts readers will read is, when the war is going on in the castle of the three evil brothers. This is exciting because you can't guess what is going to happen. Another exciting part is found in the " Quest of Excaliber." In this story Merlin, Arthur's trusty friend, helps him find a sword because Arthur's broke in his last battle.
Various signs of uniqueness are shown throughout his book. I think that the most unique part of the story was how it was narrated. The author writes the book so it has certain suspense to it. The book is written in third person and the author occasionally uses dialog. Throughout the book the author uses past tense and future test.
I recommend this book for eleven year olds because, it is a fairly easy read. Also, for people who are interested in the King Arthur story because, it gives the basics of King Arthur out.

Interesting but too wordy
This is a very interesting book but the writer is much too wordy asking too many questions before trying to answer them. I like the concept of the book but don't like the way it's written.
