One of a kind must-read! Fills major gap in the literature!
This book deals with an all-to-often forgotten component of investment science: "the science of trading".

The authors brilliantly fill a major gap in the literature and its real-world applications. This book provides both an accessible introduction to the science of trading, and a rigorous quantitative treatment.

So far, most of the investment science literature assumes trades to be instantaneous, cost-free and divorced from returns. But to the active trader, portfolio manager, plan sponsor or student of finance, these assumptions can mean the difference between a winning and a losing investment.

The authors present a methodology that will allow the uninitiated to qualitatively distinguish between trading strategies and gauge their brokers' quality of trade execution.

The more technical reader will be provided with techniques necessary for the construction of customized trading strategies, tailored to his particular investment objectives, be they portfolio rebalancing, statistical arbitrage, swing trading, etc...

If you're directly or indirectly involved in the trading of securities, this book is not only an invaluable reference, it's a one of a kind must-read!

Must-have Reference!
This book brilliantly fills a very significant gap in the investment science literature and its real-world applications.

It deals with a fundamental, but all-to-often forgotten, component of the investment process : the science of trading.

The authors not only give an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the science of trading, but they also offer a rigorous quantitative treatment of the subject.

The book provides the non-quantitative and un-initiated with the necessary methodology to gauge the quality of trade execution provided by their brokers.

It also allows the more technically inclined to implement optimal trading strategies, to suit their particular needs, whether they be stat-arb, portfolio rebalancing, etc...

So far, most of the literature in quantitative finance focuses strictly on the creation of optimal portfolios, ignores liquidity issues and assumes the trading of securities to be instantaneous, and without impact on returns.

But wether you're an active trader, portfolio manager, plan sponsor, risk analyst or student of quantitative finance, you cannot afford to ignore liquidity issues and trading costs.

This book is a must-have reference, that will be of valuable use!

Teaches how to use a correct word combination
This Dictionary of English is very useful for non-native or even native people. You are able to write letters or speak in an appropriate way using the exact combination with prepositions, or adjectives for a specific word. I highly recommend this book for those who are non-native and have problems in using a correct combination of words. You should buy it as your second dictionary.

A maestro!
If you love wildlife art that shows every hair, whisker or feather of a wild creature and every blade of grass, leaf or branch in the "background", Carl Brenders is your man. His work is technically brilliant and acutely observed, resulting in paintings that are more real than reality.

This man can draw! There are a few pencil sketches included in the book. They are a little looser than his impeccable paintings and they appeal to me more than the paintings.

So much art is a matter of taste - I am awe struck by the patience Brenders must possess in order to produce these images, but I personally prefer a more spontaneous approach. I subscribe to James McNeill Whistler's view: "To say of a picture, as is often said in its praise, that it shows great and earnest labour, is to say that it is incomplete and unfit for view." Brenders manages to achieve a fusion of "great and earnest labour" (he must take months to do each painting!) and creative excellence. That's the only reason why I give a four- and not five-star rating! It's just a little TOO slick for my taste.

The layout of this book is clean and fresh, allowing his detailed paintings lots of white space. Accompanying the paintings is a brief commentary from the artist. This text reinforces the artist's absolute love of his subject.

Fantastic Example !
If you are not a collector of wildlife paintings or limited edition fine art work yet, you definitely will be after you see these images. Many people belive these are only photos. Carl Brenders captures so much detail in his paintings, most are fooled who do not know of his works. From the finest feathers of a golden eagle's head to the glass-like eyes of a Canadian Lynx to lichen and moss on rocks and trees.
I have been an art dealer for many years and still am in awe at his paintings and prints. It is truly amazing that someone has the ability to represent wildlife in such a way.

My favorite artist
Carl Brenders is a fantastic artist. I had his calendar hanging in my office and people thought his drawings were photographs. This is an excellent book of his works.

a must-have book for all English learners
When I first knew of the existence of this book, I wondered: why, there should be such a dictionary in every language! And, yet, how come I didn't even once think of searching for that kind of dictionary in English?? I should have known of it much earlier!

English is my second language, and even though I belong to the cateogry of "advanced" learner, I still have difficulty, for instance, in locating the right preposition or adverb that go with certain verbs or adjectives. For example, the very subtle difference in meaning between "be familiar to vs. be familar with" is a very difficult one for a non-native English speaker like me to grasp. The BBI dictionary of English Word Combinations aims to address problems unique to ESL learners, including the one I just mentioned. Keep it handy, and it will let you command more accurate & "real" English.

When you forget your prepositions...
The BBI Dictionary of English Word Combinations is useful for the ESL student, but also for professional translators. Translators are often "in the zone," between both the source and target language and forget the simplest phrasal verbs. I've found this book helpful in sweeping up those messy pronouns that betrayed the original source language of my translation. Praise to the authors. They would have gotten 5 stars if there was more emphasis on modern use of the word combinations. The ESL reader still won't know what it means "to come out" (as in announcing a sexual preference or a hidden attribute) by consulting this book. But, I know, writing a dictionary is like sweeping the beach!

An excellent tool for translators
This is an extraordinary tool for translators into English. It is a dictionary of collocations, and provides information that is hard to find in other dictionaries. It helps you find that elusive word that goes with another, and answers many questions about which preposition to use.

Are You Hungry, Dear: Life, Laughs, and Lasagna (Thorndike Press Large Print Biography Series)

Hungry for Something Else
I am a huge "Everybody Loves Raymond" fan and was excited to read star Doris Roberts's autobiography, "Are You Hungry, Dear?" However, the book did not live up to my expectations and left me hungry for something else.

Instead of taking the reader on a chronological journey through her life, Roberts shares various bits and pieces that are linked by a common thread -- loss of people close to her, lessons learned in life, etc. While this approach is novel and somewhat interesting, it does make things immensely confusing. The book seems to be put together in no real apparent order and jumps around so much that it is difficult to follow.

Another irritating factor of the book was its preachiness. While Doris Roberts is definitely a very talented and respected actress, I felt like I was being lectured instead of being introduced into her life's journey. Instead of talking about lessons that she's learned throughout her struggle to become an actress, Roberts shares advice, more advice, and still more advice. There is so much advice in this book that it should be categorized under self-help, not biography.

"Are You Hungry, Dear?" is not a complete loss, however. There are several funny passages and stories throughout, and Roberts offers insights into her dealings with famous actors like Ray Romano, Pierce Brosnan, Cary Grant, Laurence Olivier, and many others. There is great information on the workings of both New York theater and the Hollywood film scene. Unfortunately, the jumpiness and onslaught of advice ruines what could have been a very interesting story to hear. Sorry, Doris. I'm hungry for something else.

Entertaining, even if Marie Barone rubs you the wrong way
Why do we read celebrity bios, anyway, if not to search for connections between the actor and his/her character? That's easy enough to do with Doris Roberts' life story, where shades of Marie Barone surface from time to time. By the end of the book, the reader has learned about Roberts' unusual Bronx childhood, her two marriages, her relationship with her son, her career move from New York to California, and some of the offscreen antics of the cast and crew of _Everybody Loves Raymond_ . There are enough facts to chew on without getting into too many intrusive personal details. Her extensive stage background is reflected in the structure of the book itself, for each chapter feels as though we're viewing a scene from her life. The presentation makes perfect sense even though the overall progression isn't chronological. The curtain call of each chapter is a recipe from Roberts' own files, a technique which has the effect of not only sharing a part of herself but also tying her even closer to her onscreen character. And who knows? Maybe she'll start a fad of throwing holiday Greed Parties! A natural sequel to Patricia Heaton's _Motherhood and Hollywood_. _Raymond_ fans will not be disappointed.

A feisty dame tells funny tales of her long road to stardom
I don't watch "Raymond" regularly. I'm not fond of celebrity bios. But this book caught my eye and then I couldn't put it down.

Doris Roberts's journey from sad "Little Doris" to a full-blown diva in her 70s made me laugh: she had a varied career, and learned a lot about life as she learned about acting. Roberts even has her very own actress climbing-out-the-boardinghouse-window story! There's some pathos - handled graciously -- but most of the book reflects a courage and humor I admire. Even some of the recipes are funny!

Difficult to use
This book is comprehensive with alot of good information; however, the medications are listed by generic name only. I have found it very frusterating in the clinical setting. I would suggest the authors at least include an index of both generic and trade names to make it more user-friendly.

Drug Information Handbook
Excellent nutshell book. organized by generic name, with common brands listed, and cross indexed to generic name in the text if you look up brand name. many comparative tables in appendix simplify comparisons. not complete drug info, but very good rapidly retrivable basic info. quite current.

A pharmacist's opinion
One of the best references available--recommended by pharmacy schools. Dense information per unit space. Drugs are listed alphabetically by generic name. To those who criticize this organization because of their lack of familiarity with generic names: It is a necessary compromise for manageable volume. Other inexpensive references can provide cross referencing between brand and generic names. The Drug Information Handbook gives some of the best summaries of indications, adverse reactions, drug interactions, available dosage forms, and dosing information for health care professsionals--far superior to the information in the more commonly used PDR. Medical professionals should consider using the former in place of the latter. The only criticism I have is the relatively sparse information on combination products--again, however, an understandable compromise for manageable volume.

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews Robert Owen
Most of the great Utopian socialists were French, i.e. St. Simon, Fourier etc. One exception was Robert Owen who was born in England in 1771. He developed a reformist philosophy which sought to persuade all people to rearrange society so that the means of production were owned in common by all members of the society. He tried to establish these ideas in practice by experimentation in his home town of New Lanarck, England and in the United States.

In 1825 he purchased 30.000 acres in Indiana near the present town of New Harmony, Indiana. He established a self-contained community on that location which lasted just three years. He then returned to England and tried other experiments their and did extensive writing on his ideas.

This book contains a short survey of Robert Owen's life and a sample of his ideas taken for his writings. It is a worthy addition to any history library.
