Story to Start Own Adventures
Great story by a wonderful author. Children of all ages will love this book and will find it a bedtime favorite. Buy one today and share it with a friend.

Awesome
My family thoughly enjoyed this book. Although it is listed as a childrens book, it is truly a book for all ages.

A beautiful book
Stitches, the baseball, was not perfect but he had his own dreams. His journey to the realization of his dreams is one which will hold a child's attention. The journey is filled with setbacks and difficulties; but in the end it is worth the trip.

Kevin does not reveal the journey's end along the way. He keeps that secret and thereby keeps us reading.

There is a lesson to learn from Stitches, one that all of us need to learn in order to make the most of our lives: Dreams come true in ways we least expect.

This 32 page book is beautifully illustrated in full color and enhances the story.

The younger child will enjoy listening as the story is read to him/her and the older child will find the language easy to comprehend without being too simple. This will make a great gift that will be read over and over.

Hard Work Pays Off
This is one of the best books ever written on the performing arts. By focusing in on Barrymore's Shakespearean acting only, Morrison manages to show how a second-rate light comedian turned himself into a great artist by sheer hard work -- and then, horrifyingly, how an artist transformed himself into a clown through laziness and dissipation. Through the use of the actor's playbooks and impressive research, Morrison does the impossible and brings Barrymore's stage performances as Richard III and Hamlet so vividly alive you'll swear you're in the theater watching them (I was holding my breath at the end of "Hamlet"). Along the way there are vivid portraits of the idealistic, progressive theater in the 1920's and, a decade later, the ancestry of today's poisonous and envious celebrity culture. Once you read this book you'll never look at Barrymore the same way again.

Inspiring & Heartbreaking
Michael Morrison's book fills a much needed gap in the large Barrymore biographical canon: it tells the story of Barrymore the artist. Many of the other great biographies of the man and family (Margot Peter's THE HOUSE OF BARRYMORE, anything by James Kotsilibas-Davis, to name only two of many excellent others) understandably short-shrift the details found here, in favor of the fabulous "bon mots" and the large tragic arc of his life. Morrison, if it's possible to believe, makes that tragedy all the more heartbreaking by detailing the hard work that Barrymore put himself through to transform himself from a light comedian into the greatest tragic actor of his generation - and arguably the last great tragic actor of the American theatre.

The detailed recreations of Barrymore's acting in RICHARD III and HAMLET are facinating. They provide all of us who have come after some small picture of what it must have been like to actually see him on stage. It helps, I suppose, to be familiar with his film work, to have heard at least some of his Shakespearean recordings, in order to fully visualize Barrymore's "flashing, rapier" genius at work - but it's probably not necessary. A must for all Barrymore fans, actors, and theatre lovers, this book is a treasure. But beware, its story could break your heart.

A stunning overview of an American legend.
Michael Morrison has provided us with a stirring portrait of one of America's greatest actors, John Barrymore. His book is a vivid account of Barrymore's innovative approach to Shakespearean acting and subsequent rise to fame. This book is required reading for Shakespearean scholars and Barrymore enthusiasts alike.

If you can only buy one field guide, buy this one.
Eastern Forests is a good field guide for both experts and beginners. Makes a great gift for young naturalists. This book not only provides identification means; it also answers odds and end questions about why plants and animals do different things. Everything from newt behavior to how weather affects bird migration is covered in this guide.

A Great Buy, Very Interesting
This is a great field guide that covers many aspects of forests East of the Great Plains. Although it covers many common species of both animal and plant, it is not overly helpful for positively identifying individual species; and if one wants that, you are better off with a more specific field guide (i.e., Eastern Birds). It does, however, detail the workings of a forest and accompanies this fascinating text with 53 color plates, 80 color photos and many black and white drawings. In the first few chapters, it demonstrates the different forest types through indicator species; and it details the process of Old Field succesion, and the animals and plants that come and go as the process progresses. In the last chapters adaptation, and seasonal patterns are covered. I would highly reccommend this field guide for any one who would like to know how a forest works.

The Ganymede Project

Tom Clancy Meets Robert A. Heinlein
This techno-thriller seems to create its own, unique genre. As the book's cover indicates, it is a spy-versus-spy science fiction story set in the near-past, and it puts a brand-new spin on Top Secret government operations.

The level of detail and fast-paced action is like early Tom Clancy at his best. The "micro events" of the spy saga, embryonic science and government cover-up unfold against the "macro events" of near-history. We get to know and understand the motives of the two principal characters--Katrina Fontanova, who won her spy spurs by taking risks during the Russian "putsch"; and Yuri Sverdlov, the failed U.S. Seal ... FBI counter-intelligence agent whose passion for justice overrides political conformity.

When the two strong-willed individuals collide in a scramble for the ultimate disruptive technology--a technology of alien origin--the book accelerates into hyperdrive, and you won't be able to put it down.

The author's web site indicates that "The Ganymede Project" is the first book in a trilogy.

I can't wait for the next installment!

Espionage, Intrigue, Aliens
This novel brings together a number of action/thriller concepts: international conflict, spy games, government conspiracies, and alien technology. Morrison introduces a large cast of characters who slowly become entangled in the same web. They seem to be unrelated, but become united through a certain knowledge (which is at the center of the novel). To the degree that sides can be pitted against one another, they are those protecting this knowledge and those who have become exposed to it. Morrison's main statement is about information. Information is the novel's main commodity, and every character is out to gather it or protect it. It puts characters in danger and protects them. Thorough reading aside, "The Ganymede Project" is engaging and suspensful, and definetly worth reading for anyone who enjoys the mystery/action genre.

Rate this 3D Pop-Up Book #1 on your list!!
Definitely one of the best 3D Pop-Up books I've run across in a long time! I just purchased an armful of them for gifts. Wow! Not only is John Garrity a fab writer for Sports Illustrated, but he certainly has a knack for this 3D thing... I wonder how I missed this when it first came out.

A collectors item from 2 perspectives: Golf & Paper Art.
Look out, FOUR! Aficionados of that game of games, Golf, and the ultimate in Paper Art, pop-up books, will be struck with this delightful collectors item from John Garrity. It details, with great text and illustrations, a large slice of golfing history and the reader is hooked into participating in the book from T off to final putt down. Enlightening pop-ups, and there are 6 major and 10 minor spreads, go a fairway towards depicting the games origin, development and future possibilities. It chips away at the notion that golf is only for the rich and drives one to the inescapable conclusion that it truly is a wonderful game. A must for collectors, the green fields approach and no rough edges, allows one to have a ball displaying ones newly acquired knowledge. Mark this one on your card!

Excellent Study of Plantation Architecture
John Vlach's book is a thorough study of the architecture of plantation slavery in the South. He primarily used resource materials from the 1930s Historic American Building Survey and WPA interviews with former slaves to develop a social history. The research is solid and comprehensive. Vlach demonstrates ways to interpret the buildings for information about the life of the people who worked and dwelled in them, and he backs up his conclusions with interview materials. It's a terrific way of studying architecture that merges folklife studies with architectural history. The conclusions expanded my understanding about history, and this book is an essential contribution to learning about black history.

Discovering Dinosaurs In The Old West: The Field Journals Of Arthur Lakes, deftly edited by Michael F. Kohl (Amateur paleontologist, Head of Special Collections at the Clemson university Library, and the discovered of Lake's missing journals) and John S. Educational Philosophy of Saint John Bosco
Published in Paperback by SRM Distribution Services (1997)
Author: John A. Morrison
Amazon base price: $6.95
Average review score:

A Moral Alternative to John Dewey
Morrison provides a very thorough and scholarly explanation of St. John Bosco's Preventive System. Very little information is available on Don Bosco and Morrison's book is a very welcome contribution and a refeshing and moral alternative to John Dewey's philosophy. Don Bosco's Preventive system is based on the Christian concept of Faith, Hope, and Love which Don Bosco terms Reason, Religion and Kindness. Basically, Bosco describes a learner-centered pedagogy in which the teacher's duty is to discipline through affection, be present among his students, keep the students interested, active and tailor the curriculum to the students' needs and interests. A big part of what students' need is religion and guidelines on how to behave and this is Don Bosco's significant difference from other philosophers like Dewey. The Preventive System offers a learner-centered method that prepares students not only for their professional life in adult society but also helps students acquire Christian ideals and virtues. In this day and age when there is an obvious need to teach traditional morality in schools again, Morrison's description of Don Bosco's methods is a timely reintroduction of a well-tried method. This book should appeal to those looking for an alternative to the atheistic philosophy of John Dewey, anyone interested in Catholic education, or educators looking for a moral and learner-centred approach to education.

Superb Ecological Review of Western Habitats
Once again, Peterson field guides has provided a user-friendly and comprehensive review of the habitats in the Southwest/Rocky Mountain region of North America. As a graduate of the conservation biology program at Arizona State University, I find this guide to be an invaluable field resource and a practical, detailed survey of the habaitat types most commonly encountered in the western region. The ecology concepts are presented in a clear and organized format and the illustrations effectively convey more challenging concepts. I find Peterson's ecology series to be the choice reference guide for students of ecology and conservation and an enriching counterpart to the range of Peterson's field guides.
