Father and Son in the Creation Story
This is an awe-inspiring retelling of the first story of the Bible - the creation story. The poetic text emphasizes the loving collaborative effort of Father and Son (God and Jesus) in bringing the universe into existence.

This is the only creation storybook that we have found that addresses the "us" in "Let US make man in OUR image." (Genesis 1:26), by acknowledging the presence of the Son at the time of creation.

The illustrations are beautifully artistic, thus taking children into the story. Our Christian Sunday school curriculum company for the Workshop Rotation Model likes this story so much that we have integrated it into one of our lessons.

The Dragon's Pearl
Published in Hardcover by Clarion Books (1993)
Authors: Julie Lawson and Paul Morin
Amazon base price: $15.95
Average review score:

One of the best illustrated fairy tales ever published
This is a meticulously researched, beautifully told, and exquisitely illustrated fairy tale. During a severe drought, a poverty-stricken boy discovers by accident a magic pearl that saves his, his mother's, and many of their fellow villagers' lives until some villains came with the intent to snatch the pearl away. In addition to the common theme of the struggle between good and evil, this tale expounds particularly well the Chinese concept of the benevolent dragon and filial piety.

The illustrations are worth noting. Paul Morin, an award-winning Canadian artist, spent months on location in China to research the scenery, architecture, costumes, and customs of the people. As in his previous book, The Orphan Boy, he incorporated real objects onto his canvas to enrich the texture of the paintings. If you are looking for a magnificent picture of the Chinese dragon, look no further.

A wonderful book for children 6 and up for reading, for adults interested in Chinese folklore, and for storytellers. Highly recommended.

The Mud Family
Ms. James's book entitled, "The Mud Family" is a very heartwarming and culturally sound book. I am an elementary school teacher. I read "The Mud Family" to my second graders every year in November when we study Native American traditions. I have several copies of this book so that my students can read it together in small groups or pairs. It's a wonderful read-aloud, too!

Excellent story on how Venus came to be
Orphan Boy combines the values of character and responsibility. The Orphan Boy must make several critical decisions throughout the story. The pictures are absolutely stunning. The ending is a complete surprise but still plausible. A great book for grades three and up.

Triangular Reflections
Paul E. Morin has written a book which, through its simplicity and the interactions of its three main charachters demonstrates the good in people and that there is hope for a better life. I enjoyed reading this interesting and uplifting book.

A Wonderfully Written Novel
Triangular Reflections is a beautiful and wonderfully written novel. Not only was it written out of love, but it is very inspirational. I rarely read novels of fiction. I found myself immersed in this book and read it in two days. The main characters that have been developed in this story are rich. Each of them has depth. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a dynamic plot.

A Wonderful Book!
This novel was a wonderful book to read! It was interesting and it grabbed my attention from the beginning. It made me laugh and it made me cry. This novel kept me on my toes and I couldn't put it down. Really--really good.

A response
In response to your review of REDRUM. I can tell you that my mother and I are doing fairly well. But the damage done by a botched Durham investigation has taken it's toll on me....I become increasingly frustrated day by day. It has been 15 years and the person who has killed my sister has not been found. This makes me fearfull as I too have a small child now, and I know the horrors that this person inflicted upon my sister.

And the scariest part is that person still lives among us.

Since you wondered in your review how my family was doing. I thought I would tell you.

Sincerely Ken Jessop

Every Canadian should read this one...
I was completely stunned by Makin's book. It is so thoroughly researched and so well written that I cannot drive through that region of Ontario without getting chills. Makin makes clear, that this case needs to be solved and the truely guilty brought to justice or it will forever haunt every one involved.

A superb examination of the Canadian Judicial System
This book is groundbreaking. I can't say enough about it, or say it well enough. I'll leave it at that. Thank you, Kirk Makin, for the soul and commitment which shows in your work.

Animal Dreaming: An Aboriginal Dreamtime Story

Well written and superbly illustrated - great for children!
It is nice to discover a book that both entertains children and informs its' adult readers. Perhaps if we let ourselves hear (and I dare say even believe) such stories more often, our daily lives could not only be enriched, but have a whole lot more meaning to them...

Panther: Shadow of the Swamp

High-quality endangered animal book
In the Everglades, a Florida panther searches for food to keep her strength up to nurse her kittens. The simple story of this picture book for primary students comes alive with Paul Morin's striking, vibrant illustrations of the lush vegetation and wildlife of the Florida Everglades. Jonathan London's concise free verse suggests the anticipation and secrecy of the scarce panther's mission. An educational postscript is above the reading level of the rest of the book, but teachers and parents will find it a helpful resource. This is an admirable addition to a collection on endangered animals for primary-age children.

Lasting Echoes: An Oral History of Native American People
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (2001)
Authors: Joseph Bruchac and Paul Morin
Amazon base price: $14.95

The cover gets your attention but the content does not.
Lasting Echos is a book of true stories with many facts. The way that the stories are formed is interesting but it drags on. If you are someone that is interested in Native culture this could be the book for you. The discription of what happen in different situations is well written. I think younger people might like it because they can create images of the stories. Teenagers probally would not relate to it and not keep their interest.

This book is informative and interesting.
Lasting Echoes is an very informative book which offers alot of quotes taken from the native americans on their feelings of the explorers that took over their land. It is a great book to let us know about the other side of history that many of us do not usually think about. This book made me better appreciate the people that owned this land before us.
