nice stories
when you're in the mood for some short whistful escapist romantic stories in a celtic setting, pick up this one. good for a rainy sunday afternoon.

Great short stories
Wonderful stories of magic, romance, and irish lore. If you like to curl up at night with a short story, this is a great book for you. I was delighted with this book and with Irish Magic II.

A mixture of romance, folklore, sorcery, and supernatural
This book will not appeal to everyone and is reviewed in the context of the intended audience. It is a collection of four novelettes by master storytellers. The first story, "Galway Bay" by Morgan Llywelan, is a change of pace for readers familiar with her full length historical novels. It is set in modern times, and concerns a part-Irish woman on vacation in Galway, Ireland, who encounters the underlying realities of Irish folklore and discovers romance in an unexpected place. The second story, "The Harpers's Daughter" by Barbara Samuel, is set in ancient Ireland and concerns Deirdre, destined to be the bride of a king, but she loves another. Expressed in Deirdre's thoughts (about other women in the king's court), "One of them, one day, would have the warrior who'd snared her heart, while she would lie with the fat, old king. It wasn't fair." Deirdre is cursed with extraordinary beauty that creates uncontrolled lust in the minds of any men who see her. Can she find a refuge with the man she loves, and will magic protect them? The third and fourth stories deal with connections to the spirit world in an ancient Irish setting. The third, "The Trysting Hour" by Susan Wiggs, is about a spirit that can assume a mortal man's shape, and who desires a woman meant to be a king's wife. Can he win her hand while he prevents the king from consumating the marriage? And is she really an ordinary mortal woman? The fourth, "Rarer than a White Crow" by Roberta Gellis, has a man placed under a spell by a shape-changing witch with her own agenda (which can only be guessed at). People are at an interface between the spirit world and the mortal world. Angus must win the hand of Caer and love her til the end of her days in order to be free from the spell, but that is easier said than done. Can they thwart the real agenda of the witch? The book contains explicit sex and violence. It is an excellent set of stories for those interested in this type of fantasy romance.

Magick afoot
I picked this book up on a whim at a book fair. I was enormously lucky to find four such gifted story tellers together in one book. This book is a must for those who love the Ireland of yore. This was one of those books I read cover to cover in one sitting. After each story, I was worried that the next would be a disappointment, but that never happened. These tales weave together to give you a sense of Irish Magick as its best.

'Tis a fine read!
Wonderful stories of magic, romance, and irish lore. If you like to curl up at night with a short story, this is a great book for you. I was delighted with this book and with Irish Magic.

Main event : the world of professional wrestling

A fun and nostalgic read.
Writing a review of this book about twenty years after it was published, I appreciate it even more now than I did then. At the time, no wrestlers or people involved in the wrestling business were allowed to break "kayfabe" - carny-speak meaning they couldn't "expose" the wrestling business as entertainment and not truly sport. Now, that's all changed. Therefore, the books we read now on wreslting are true, gritty behind-the-scenes recounts of the business side of things. Roberta Morgan's book paints a simple but nostalgic portrait of the major superstars of the 1970's, filled with color photos, some of which have since become wrestling classics. It has snippets of interviews, information on the wrestlers' backgrounds (now so obviously fictional) and is just an enjoyable read. For a longtime wrestling fan, it will bring a glorious and bygone era alive.

Best background
For anyone who loves pro wrestling, this is the only book that tells you how it started, and who owned titles up until the 1980' and how they did it. Also features long interview by Andre the Giant, Bruno Sammartino, and other greats. Knows more than MacMahon.

A Window On An Era
Chapter One discusses the history of Disco, beginning with the ancient roots of dance, through rock 'n roll and the birth of the actual discothèque in the mid-1960s. The dance called the Hustle, created by the youths of East Harlem, was instrumental in spreading the new dance culture and by the mid-1970s, discos started opening in great numbers all over New York City. Van McCoy's record The Hustle was one o the fist soon to be fold by Gloria Gaynor's Never Can Say goodbye and the songs of Barry White. Donna Summer and The Village People. Chapter 2 deals with disco fashion and has a nice pic of Christina Onassis dancing away, while Chapter 3 provides interesting histories of disco stars like grace Jones, John Travolta. Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, The Bee Gees, Chic, Sister Sledge, The Village People, Cher, Linda Clifford, Sylvester, Gino Soccio and Madleen Kane. Chapter 4 describes the dancing styles and demonstrates the Cross Step, the Bus Stop and three types of Hustles with illustrated footsteps, while Chapter 5 provides a list of discos in all the major cities of the US and Canada, from Atlanta to Winnipeg, as they existed in the late 1970s. The text is enlivened by stunning black and white photographs of places like Regines, Studio 54, The Electric Circus, The Copacabana, The Funhouse, and celebrities like Margaret Trudeau, Liza Minelli, Bianca Jagger plus artists like Grace Jones, Tony Orlando, Rod Stewart and all the others mentioned above. There are also 15 brilliant colour photographs that really capture all the glitter and excitement of the disco culture. Reading this book again gave me a feeling of extreme nostalgia for those more innocent times - as a teenybopper I was fortunate to enjoy the last years of disco. For those interested in the disco phenomenon, I would also like to recommend Albert Goldman's Disco, a more substantial and detailed work that also features lovely photographs.

No Quick-Access
If you are looking for a quick-access guide to the nutrients in foods, this is not it. However, if you like reading prose, and percentages, this may be the book for you. The nutrient listings are inconsistent and random including some nutrients with one food and others with another. Some nutrients are listed as grams but most are listed as percentages which means you would have to use this book with a calculator to make it useful. Why didn't they do this work for me? Even the serving sizes are vague such as, "Cookies, Chocolate Chip, one small."
