A BOOK TO BE TREASURED BY ADULTS AND CHILDREN.
This is a wonderful anthology. Top-notch mystery writers and their children (and, in some cases, grandchildren) collaborated on a variety of entertaining stories.

Pay particular attention to "Releve", the story contributed by Patricia Wallace and her daughter. This story introduces us to Sydney Bryant, the private eye that Pat Wallace has featured in a terrific series for adults. The titles in the series include "Deadly Devotion" and "Blood Lies".

Other outstanding stories include those by Wendy Hornsby, Scott Turow, Stuart Kaminsky, and Sharyn McCrumb (and their collaborators). This is a book that parents can read and enjoy with their children. It might inspire them to collaborate on some mystery stories of their own!

I look forward to reading the companion volume, "Great Writers and Kids Write Spooky Stories". I

mini-lesson on mystery writing

"When you think of a mystery, what comes to mind? A dark secret? An unsolved crime? A curious detective hunting for clues?"

The only mystery, the only secret, the only crime is how this anthology could be so easily overlooked. "Great Writers and Kids Write Mystery Stories" (1996) is a collection of stories written by some of today's greatest mystery authors in collaboration with their children and grandchildren. Jonathan Kellerman, Sharyn McCrumb, and Scott Turow are three of the thirteen award-winning writers that create wonderous whodunits with their offspring, ages 6 to adult.

While written at about the junior high/ middle school level, this complilation is enjoyable to all. The stories are five to several pages. Some are written with the child as the amateur detective, some are written as a type of psychological thriller.

The introduction serves as a "mini-lesson" on mystery writing. And, each story features a short personal introduction by the adult and child writing team on what it was like to collaborate on their included story. Other contributors include Barbara D'Amato, Ed Gorman, Stuart Kaminsky, Elizabeth Engstrom, and many others.

This book has the unique ability to be educational as well as entertaining. Those that enjoy this book may also enjoy the first volume as well: "Great Writers and Kids Write Spooky Stories" (1995).

Introducing The Most Beautiful Ballpark In Creation
Every fan of the the Giants should get this book and wallow in the beauty of Pacific Bell Park, if you can't get there yourself. The park really is probably the most beautiful ballpark in baseball, a tiny little gem that nevertheless plays like a huge pitcher's stadium thanks to the bizarre asymmetry of its outfield (and a San Francisco wind that the park's engineering turned into an ally, instead of the vicious Hawk it was at Candlestick Park.)

But it's also a great collection of essays from baseball writers including George Will and Peter Gammons, and local writers sharing memories of the team and the long years of waiting in the cold and fog for a world championship that still hasn't come. Those essays are some of the best parts of the book, moving and nostalgic in the best sense.

The body text, that tracks the long road from New York through Candlestick to the drama of building a new ballpark without the safety net of public money, then chronicles the great 2000 season, is little more than acceptable, but in a coffee table book what you want is gorgeous photographs and insightful vignettes, and "Splash Hit" has that in aces.

Awesome
Great pictures of what has to be one of the nicest sports facilities in the world. I've been to one game here - and as a resident of Seattle, I honestly think that Safeco is a better place to watch a game. However, no stadium can match the asthetic views and its situation in one of the most beautiful cities in the world makes Pac Bell #1.

A Great Book For A Great Ball Park
Pac Bell Park is one of the newest and one of the best ball parks in America. This book is a great tribute to that new park and the Giants' first year playing in it. The book goes into the history and politics behind the park and has a lot of good pictures of the 2000 Giants players in action. Peter Magowan and local and national writers also added illuminating essays to the text. There are a lot of spectacular pictures of the park from all different angles and some interesting construction shots.

A little disappointing was that the book did not have much on the Polo Grounds, Seals Stadium, and Candlestick Park. Even though the Giants no longer play at the old parks, their history is indelibly intertwined with the newer ball park and they deserved more space.

This belongs on any Giants fan's coffee table, especially if they have visited the park.

The Book of Apples
A well researched book on the history of apples in England. It also includes a very large apple directory which would be especially useful to anyone interested in English apple varieties.

Best single reference on apples available
Wow! I'm an apple industry executive, and this book just became one of my bibles. I believe it is THE single best reference available on apples today. It includes comprehensive information on the history of apple growing and the apple industry, from the ancient Greeks and Romans through renaissance Europe and to the "new country" (America). It is chock full of references to apples in history, mythology/lore and religion. All this, and the most comprehensive, up-to-date directory of apple varieties anywhere. Read this book and be amazed, even if you think you know apples! This is a great reference on the industry, and should appeal equally to history buffs.

Essential for admirers of apples.
Do you have an apple orchard? Do you love eating fresh apples or cooking with apples? Would you like to understand the place of apples in our culture/history? What's the origin of "as American as apple pie?" What is Wassail and what does it have to do with Christmas? What's the big deal with apples anyway? Did you know there are thousands of varieties? This book has an index of the thousands which are kept in an English aboretum. It also has some of the most beautiful color botanical plates I have ever seen. With the artwork, the history, the scientific tables, the recipies, ...The Book of Apples would be a bargain at twice the price.

speak sister
Ms Morgan was on point. She tells it like it is. She has managed to say everything that I and many others have known and maybe did not have the courage to say. Think twice before proclaiming that I am STRONG BLACK WOMAN. Joan has open our eyes and mind to the state of affairs of what it entails when we embark on that journey of self relization. I highlighted and have memorized her mission statement, "I honestly believe that the only way sistas can begin to experience empowerment on all levels-spiritual, emotional, financial, and political- is to understand who we are- and then tell the truth about it". BROTHERS YOU ARE A PART OF OUR EMPOWERMENT so it is necessary for you to gain insight so please read this and sit down with that sister and have that meaningful discussion. For those who are therapist phobic read this book and embark on your journey of SOUL CLEANSING. Ms Morgan thanks for your candor.

The new and misunderstood young, black woman.
Morgan eloquently voices the thoughts and desires of the independent, feminist, African American woman. She acknowledges the black feminists of the past but explains that today's feminists of the hip hop generation are different and they express different needs and desires from themselves and the people surrounding them whether they be male or female.

In her last essay "Chickenhead Envy" she acknowledges that "strongblackwomen" and "chickenheads" may have the same wants and desires but the roads they take to achieve them are different, creativing a dividing line coated with animosity.

Morgan calls herself a STRONGBLACKWOMAN in remission, saying she doesn't not want to be lauded for her success through struggle. Eliminating struggle from a black woman's life does not make her any less of a woman.

I recommend this book to women and men, black and white, young and old. If you have a desire to understand today's young African American woman, Morgan's blunt, in-your-face writing will give you an look instead the mind of one who is such.

The Survival Guide for young black women!! A MUST READ.
Mad Love to the Author!!!! Joan Morgan is a phenomenalwriter. "When Chickenheads...." is a a must read for allyoung black women. She embraces and addresses so many themes and issues that are essential to the survival of young black women in the age of the chickenhead. From the perspective of the reader, this book, made me feel as if I was engaged in an empowering conversation with one of my homegirls,my big sister, and my best friend. I could relate on a personal level to her stance on most issues and experiences. This Sistah drops "mad knowledge" combined with lots of food for thought. She brings to light many important issues faced not only by the African-American community, but by people in general. She forces us to take a reflective look within at the Chickenhead in us all, allowing us to put that undesirable sistah or brotha in check. I Love this book. Brothas need to read this book also,to gain much needed insight on the perspectives of sistahs.

This Voice must be heard
Morgan's book wasn't what I expected, but it brought up a number of points that can't be ignored in the Black Community. She writes about how many independent women negotiate their dating relationships as well as how she deals with sexism in Hip Hop culture.

one of the best books i've ever read......
this book is LITERALLY one of the best books I have EVER read... Morgan tackles issues such as "the strong black woman" and "the endangered black male" in ways that allow younger feminists or just younger black women in general to access her ideas. A GREAT READ.

A necessary book for understanding black womanism
I have bought this book three times now, because my students and friends keep borrowing it and "forgetting" to return it. They love it, and so do all of the black women I know who read it.

This book is truly an insightful and elegant attempt to explain the complexity of black womanism (most black women reject feminism, which places gender at the center of an experience, and place race/gender/class at the center, and understand these things mix). She discusses the disgust "strongblackwomen" have for "chickenheads", whose conservative philosophy of using their bodies as a shortcut to monetary and sexual achievement hurts other black women, as we are accused of the same manipulative behavior. She also articulates what most educated black women have thought, over and over again, as we confront black women and men who want our (middle class black women's and black men's)help, but who then criticize us down for being responsible, disciplined, educated, and successful. She also deals with white racism, and how irresponsible people use it to tear down responsible black women.

Redtwister's review denigrates her solutions as simplistic and symptomatic of her status as a middle class black women. He calls them "bootstrap" and "Nation of Islam." This reveals his lack of experience with the non-academic black community, and especially with the black inner city. He recommends a class analysis that leads to governmental solutions that just are not going to happen, and does not understand that this work is conscious at all times of "reality" and feasiblity. He does not understand that middle class black men and women are the key to fighting problems in the black community, for they understand the reality, and are the only ones who can fashion realistic solutions from experience. For too long the old jibe about middle class self help and education being oppressive has been used to silence the black middle class from effective discussion and influence. Her discussion of solutions is strong, feasible, and most importantly realistic and proven. Middle class black America has been hard at work at the business of saving poor black America for decades. Morgan's list of solutions not only has a history of common sense and success behind it, but also comes from the one group who has successfully escaped the ghetto.

I recommend this book, and hope that the people who it is aimed at (non-academic black women finding their way in the world) read it. Every teenage girl who worships at the House of Lil' Kim and Destiny's Child needs to read this. The true problems with "chickenheads" (the materialism, the refusal to do things the right way, the view of their bodies and sex as cheap ways to manipulate men and gain material goods) hurts other black women as some black men (commercial gangsta rappers) attempt to pin these behaviors on all black women. The chickenheads don't understand that eventually, age and gravity means you need a brain. Too many are left hard and poor at 30, and alone. But these women will not read this book. Too bad.
