Delicious, child-friendly recipes
We checked this book out from the library again and again. We loved it. There are seven very 'American' children in our family, and we ate or drank every recipe we tried from this cookbook.
The illustrations and descriptions were delightful. The recipes were tasty and appealing to all literary-minded children who have been permitted or encouraged from babyhood to have adventurous palates.
Several recipes have been oft requested birthday favorites.

Yummy. Wish it were still in print.

Delicious Food, Wonderful Fantasy
I LOVE the Chronicles of Narnia, even as a "grown-up".So I jumped at the chance to learn how to make foods described in the books.

The book is supposedly aimed at kids. I will say though, that the taste of the foods is really more adult (or English). They taste great, don't get me wrong, but kids (unless they are really excited about the recipies being Narnian) will likely think them wierd. I made the Tea Cakes with Lemon Curd Filling for a friend's kid's Communion Party, and all the adults raved--but the kids wouldn't even go near them. (Incidentally, the Tea Cakes are DELICIOUS. A wonderful treat).

A note of advice, you will need stuff like double boilers and parchment paper for some of the recipies. Plus you will have to make some trips to specialty food stores. However, most of the stuff is middling easy to make.

Overall, this is a wonderful book. I am so glad I have it. The recipies are very tasty, and the book itself provides a wonderful cornicopia of foods and ideas that Americans are not very familiar with.

Transport your family to Narnia
Having a 7-year old boy who loves The Chronicles of Narnia, this book really caught my eye. He has pored over it, and we have already made two of the recipes: Lucy's Roast Apples and Marmalade Roll. They both turned out very well, and were quite popular with the whole family.

This book has approximately 68 recipes divided into categories such as Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner, Dessert, and Drinks.

In my opinion, the mark of a good cookbook is the percentage of recipes that one would actually make. In this cookbook, there is a high percentage of the recipes that I would try.

Each recipe has a bit of commentary from Douglas Gresham, Lewis' stepson, and a quote from one of the books that lists the dish the recipe is for. The commentary is interesting and informative. There is also a foreward written by Gresham. At the end of the book are some menu ideas so that you can have a Narnian dinner party with your friends.

"Once more, O Lord!"
The preface by David Mains from "Chapel of the Air" should serve as a cavaet to the lukewarm believer; "Before you read Glory Filled the Land, it's only fair for someone to post a warning sign: Let the casual reader beware!

This small quotation perfectly sums up this account of the Welsh Revival of 1904-05. Mains is assuming that if you have picked up this book you have done so because of your dissatisfaction with your spiritual life. I know that this is the reason I bought the book.

Writing to the Corinthian Church about Israel, Paul said that "these things were given to us for examples;" this is why Christians should read this book. Because it shows what the Spirit of G-d longs to do in His people.

Through each page I can feel the Holy Spirit searching my hear for all that does not please Him; at times I feel like the moth, which is both attracted to and repelled by the flame. Holiness has this effect on me.

This is a book that has to be experienced to be understood. Mains adjures the reader to "Proceed at your own risk," and rightfully so because how could any spiritually-minded person read what the Lord did during this revival and then go back to the stale walk you had with Him prior to reading this book. I can honestly say that this little book has put me mightily under conviction and, like King David said in the Psalms, "I shall be satisfied when I awake with Thy likeness."

Foundation for Study of the Iroquois League
I read this book for my Classic Ethnographies seminar at school. It is by far one of the most interesting ethnographies I have had the pleasure of reading. It combines ethnography with history and gives the reader a good overall view of the Iroquois. I can't recommend this book enough. If you only read one book on the Iroquois, this should be that book!

Scientific analysis
Anthro major? You might be surprised how much and how many tools come from Engels, as in Marx and Engels of Capital fame. The same analytical tools they applied to economics (That are used every day) here are applied to anthropological study of the basis of our present day social institutions.
Relevant today, as much as for info as for seeing where the ideas discussed lead to the arguments and theories of today.

landmark work
Victor Turner is one of the great names in anthropology and this is a classic work of analysis of social rituals. He takes van Gennep's theories on rites of passage to a new level, examining how different elements of festivals and rites function.

Where was the editor?
As a voracious reader of everything, but especially social history and even more of olde new york, I was so excited to discover this book. But, it is hard to plow through the verbiage, repetition, and confusion of this book. Each of these woman could have been the subject of her own book and Lewis has done little in the first three quarters to give us anything so we may understand connections that merit their lives being twined together in this fashion. Also, Lewis has tried hard to develop mystery and suspense where there doesn't need to be any - these ladies are great just the way they are, the endless foreshadowing, broad hinting and leaving a story just when it gets interesting is rather silly. The author has obviously done detailed research, but I found it confusing enough to have to jump back and forth between the narratives about the four subjects, but threw up my hands as chapter after chapter began with three pages on someone new who turned out to be the sister or next door neighbor of one of the subjects. Whew, I finally deconstructed the thing by reading each woman's story through by picking it out of the morass. What a shame, because these are interesting women.

Four Outstanding Women of the Gilded Age
Each of these women could easily have had their own biography, but the author does a pretty good job of covering all four, their relationships with their world and each other. This book is a bit disorganized, but once you sort out the characters, this is a wonderful view of four outstanding women and their world.

Behind every great man there are great women!
Thank you Alfred Allan Lewis for creating a book of these spirited women who were the backbone of New York City, American society and worldwide. They are invisible in our history books, but thanks to you and your accuracy for facts their spirit remains alive!

These women influenced their power, money, political and social status to unite and heal mankind. I should know, I was there........to carry on, and say every "Queen" to there own home..

It is small book nicely written.
It is a small book nicely written. But with the price, it scares everybody away. One of the sections in this book is particularly useful for illustrating the technique of implementing non-linear calculation of heat transfer. I learned a great deal from there.

The Beginning
Lewis' book is a history and theory of the law of sexual harassment in education. The area has grown since the publication of this seminal work.

...

Since the Lewis book was published Title VII (and state human right acts) remains the cause of action for employees and Title IX has become the cause of action for students.

The book deserves an update.
