More Stories Julian Tells

From the author, March 4, 2,000
An excerpt from this book, about African-American characters, was used January 31, 2,000 in a state-wide Illinois third-grade reading standards test. 70,000 Illinois children got this test excerpt, in which the testers reillustrated the story without permission and changed the characters to Causcasians. I wrote the book with great care, and with the hope that many children will identify with my characters who are courageous and successful and well-liked. Over 200,000 copies of the book have been sold. I know from my fan mail that many children of all races do identify with the characters. It must have been painful for many of them to see their heroes turned white on a test--and for others who know the book, it must have been distracting at the least. One of the testers' three new illustrations shows the brothers in the story playing baseball. Eight books about the characters have been published to date (there will be a new one next year)--and in none of them do the characters play baseball. The testers developed their test questions based on a 3-page excerpt from the book; they had never even seen a copy of the entire book (thus the error in race), much less read it. It's quite possible that a child who had read the book would give different answers to the test questions based on his knowledge, and that the testers, in their ignorance, would mark it wrong. In many states, statewide tests are very serious these days--children are stigmatized for low scores, and teachers lose their jobs. But it appears that the tests are hastily and thoughtlessly constructed and penalize good readers. Parents and all of us concerned with education need to know what kind of tests children are being subjected to. --anncameron@guate.net

I like this book
I think it's a great book. So I want other people to read it. Because Julian tells lots of stories and it's lots of fun reading it.

This should become THE management book of 2002
Some talk about the emotional intelligence of leaders, others talk about level 5 leadership. This book focusses on what a leader should do in practice. It is written around a simple model I really like. It consists of 3 basic dimensions: Anticipate-Align-Act and 9 principles that come with these 3 dimensions of leadership. Anticipation requires that one can detect weak signals, has the agility to understand them and that the organization is flexible enough to respond. Align, the second dimension, is about assuring that the core purpose, values and beliefs of the organization are aligned with the actions of their leaders and their people. People's attitudes, values and the company culture need to be compatible with each other and this book lists attention areas and tools to increase this alignment. Finally, the third dimension has to do with acting fast enough, with attention for the 20% that makes the biggest difference and with the willingness to pursue goals with enough determination and patience. Simple as it seems, one wonders why so few leaders in companies apply this model today. I hope this book will be the stepping-stone some people need to become real "alpha leaders".

It's so well written that's irrelevant whether you have ever heard of NLP. When I wrote "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence", I wanted to make my book accessible, helping people to develop a practical EQ, using the findings of behavioral sciences such as NLP. The authors of this book have done the same for the field of management, and I think they've done wonderful job! The result is a practical book that fits amongst the top business books, and I hope that Wiley will be able to put the needed marketing efforts behind it to turn this masterwork into a bestseller.

It's fully applicable by anyone leading an organization, so that doesn't leave many excuses for not being a good leader...

I was able to retain much of the information because the words are presented in such an interesting and engaging fashion. I would recommend these tapes to anyone wanting to improve their vocabulary.

Useful Complement.
This is a book for the highly-motivated student who wants to know the most frequent words on the SAT and GRE exams and is willing to work his or her tail off to learn them. It has several other things going for it: the authors recognize the inseparability of language from thought; they caution against mistaking a large or esoteric vocabulary for knowledge; they provide some tips about etymology and the uses of Latin and Greek roots and affixes but they do not overrate this occasionally helpful tool (word meanings are dynamic and frequently arbitary, having little to do with the original word form).

The downside of the volume is that it doesn't provide a "programmed" approach capable of engaging the less-motivated reader in a progressive series of fun yet educational exercises. For this purpose, the Norman Lewis books are a better bet, even though the latter author tends to overemphasize esoteric words and overrate the importance of etymology.

An Amazing Text
I have read many books throughout my life, but this by far has been the greatest and most helpful book I have EVER read. Mere words in this review can not begin to explain how immensely this book has affected my academic career. In high school, when I took the pre-SAT for the first time, I got a 340 on the verbal. YES, that's right! a 340! Since English is not my first language, my vocabulary was EXTREMELY limited. My goal was improvement, but knowing that I had read very little English when I was young, I had to figure out a QUICK way to raise my score. That's when I discovered Word Smart. After memorizing the definition of the words in this book, and many others, my score shot up to 710 on the verbal! Keep in mind I learned English in the third grade, but I still managed to score very high. Words in this book WILL appear on EVERY SAT and GRE, not to mention all major newspapers and books of ALL kind. You can count on that. After learning the words in this book, in a very twisted way I have yet to completely understand, my writing ability also dramatically improved. In conclusion, you are a COMPLETE FOOL if you take the SAT or the GRE without first extensively studying this book. Your future is very important, don't risk it.

My life saver!!!

Good but a little annoying
It teaches you over 200 new words that you can listen and learn. The dialog in the tape can be very annoying. I wish that the tape contains more word and less useless dialog. If you take out all the annoying dialogs in the tape, it will make 5-stars tape :)

If you want to learn as much new words as you can in a short period of time, try Verbal Advantage (ISBN 1559276193).

Excellent series - The Best!
I have several vocabulary series tapes and Princeton Review is by far the best. I have retained 99% of all the words reviewed and each of the three different series.

Very well produced.
I have a limited vocabulary and wanted to improve it for the purpose of improving my chances of getting a job as a firefighter. I believe that if I listen and practice using the words that the tapes present, I will be a better candidate. In the lines of work I have previously been accustomed too, I have not heard many of the words used. I only can speculate that if I want to improve my communication skills get my desire accross to my interviewers, I will have to increase my vocabulary. I feel that Word Smart can help me with this..... Oh what's the word? Endever? Well, I still have some work to do.

Misleading, generalized, and distorted.
These authors take the reader through a journey in time as well as history to set a foundation for the use of permanent magnets. Included are case studies, testimonials, wild assumptions, and generalities. This reader felt like he was being conned by a very poor salesman. Some of the information may have been correct in it's original context. However, the authors chose to present only part of the information in a general format and discount other research which may have contrary information. This is a scary book, it has been a major seller and propaganda machine for companies and individuals to promote sales of magnetic products at the risk of the individual. This book has provided two sets of information for this reader. First is that medical degrees and bibliographical citations do not always make a credible book. Second, is this book provides a list of possible references with actual research information. I do not feel that all of the information contained in this book is wrong, just misleading, incomplete and distorted. A more complete analysis with both indications and contraindications for use can be found in "Magnetism and its effects on the living system". by Davis and Rawls.

The Pain Relief Breakthrough: The Power of Magnets
Believe what you want. If you choose to use chemincals rather than your own body to heal itself, that's your choice. I like to stay away from chemicals (i.e. medication). So, this book has helped me in my search for better health.

I used to think magnetic and far infrared stuff was black magic until I read this book. I read this book because medicine did not help.

The concepts in this book are very simple. God created a planet with what we need to live healthily, magnetic engergy being one element. Then we surround ourselves with concrete and metal that blocks the natural engergies, and with electrical appliances that confuses our naturally frequencies, no wonder our health problems increase by leaps and bounds.

It's really all about energy. You eat to get energy, right? Well. OK, I do anyway. But it takes energy to digest food. So, get some instant energy so that your body can use it instantly to protect itself. The magnets have helped me so much I won't live without them now.

The book also mentions the benefits of far infrared. You will need to read "Reverse Aging" by Sang Whang to understand the benefits of that.

I wish I can find a doctor that knows when to apply magnetics, when to prescribe alkaline diet, and when to call for surgery -- combining every form of rememdy appropriately, instead of just prescribing chemicals.

Helped me start a retailing business
This comprehensive book helped me get the necessary information to start a home-based business in medical magnets, to give me the information to sell the products and to be informed myself. A must read in alternative medical treatments.
