A Scot's Quair: A Trilogy of Novels

don't let it pass you by
unjustly overlooked, this book (really comprised of three novellas, all together a trilogy) deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with other modernist works, such as "Dubliners" or "Sons and Lovers." at its time, the books were important, both politically and socially, because they present scottish language and scottish history as things separate from - though no less equal to - the larger "English" culture. beyond this, gibbon's lyricism is a wonder to behold; he can manipulate language in ways that may bring a tear to your eye (and the story, mournful as it is, just may add to it)."Scottish Quaire" is a work that many have never heard of, and that is unfortunate. it offers a unique voice to the human condition, and, perhaps more importantly, the scottish condition. i tell you to buy it, or at least check it out of your library (lord knows there'll be copies available).

A superb account of Scotland earlier this century
A marvellous trilogy with each novel depicting that particular era superbly. My personal favourite was Sunset Song because it was saluting the end of an era for the Scottish crofter who will always be part of Scotland's great heritage.

Wonderful,timeless. A masterpiece
It is rare to find a book written on Scotland at the beginning of the 20th century to be so powerful and moving. The book heroine, Chris Guthrie is one of the most realistic and brilliant characters in modern literature. To have a book that merges elements of the Kailyard and the counter-Kailyard movement so effectively is an brilliant idea, difficult, but brilliant. Quite simply the greatest book ever written.

The Return of an old friend
I first read this series when I was still in grade school, back when the title's were the Prince's Players, Tournement and Tower and City By The Sea (does that make me old or what?) They were the only stories that I would read over and over and over and ---well you get the point. I loved reading about Randal, Lys and Walter, their story seem more realistic to me b/c the charcter's actually had consequences for their actions: like Randal's ever present scar from when he broke a majory wizardry rule in order to...(read the first one and find out) When they went out of print and my library sold them I was crushed (though I did find #2 and #3 at a used book store a year or two ago.) I'm glad that once more the series is back in print and other people can journey with the trio like I once did.

For All Fantasy Lovers
I bought the first of this series for my 8-year-old. After reading the first one myself I had to buy the others. I hope the fifth one comes out soon. If you like magic and adventure, you'll like this series--no matter what your age.

An outstanding book in an outstanding series
This book was originally published ten years ago under the title The Prince's Players. It hasn't lost any of its freshness or originality since its first publication. It was great then, both as a stand-alone book and as part of the series. (The Circle of Magic books tell one story from beginning to end if you read them in order.) All of them can be read by themselves, though, without losing the magic, the charm, and the characters.

I'm glad that these books are coming back into print, so another generation of kids can get their first taste of fantasy. There's lots hidden inside of them for older readers and more experienced fantasy readers too. This is a series that isn't just for kids.

Anyway, in this book Randal (the hero) learns more about what magic means, both to himself and to others. The overall thrust is of self-discovery, personal responsibility, and other positive values, told in the midst of an exciting action-packed adventure. Violence, spies, good twins, bad twins, and theatre all mixed, with the hero making choices that matter. Good book.

The Gethsemani Encounter: A Dialogue on the Spiritual Life by Buddhist and Christian Monastics

New, in-depth exchange
Since 1977 the small group of North American Christian monastics, monks and nuns, have established exchanges with non-Christian monastics, principally Buddhists but also with Hindus and Moslems. Attempting to identify both similarities and differences in practice rather than examine dogmas, this Monastic Interreligious Dialogue (MID) group sponsored speakers, programs and publications, and eventually engaged in sending small groups of members to visit the exiled Tibetan monastics, followers of the Dalai Lama, in India, and brought representatives from India to visit American and Canadian monasteries.
The Gethsamani Encounter was designed to extend the mutual understanding these former programs had developed to a still deeper level. It lasted almost a week. Participants were restricted to twenty-five Christians and twenty-five Buddhists from all parts of the world. The site chosen was Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky, a Trappist monastery whose most well-known member, Thomas (Brother Louis) Merton had died just twenty-five years earlier. He was one of a small group of pioneer Christians interested in Buddhism and died just shortly after having met the Dalai Lama. This confluence of place, history and dates made Gethsemani ideal for this meeting.
This book presents all of the Buddhist and Christian papers presented in multiple sessions daily. Often a group of papers would cluster around a particular theme (meditation; training) and would not only expose the common themes but especially the distinctive notes of each special group--different Buddhist lineages; various Christian groups. Presenters came from the U.S. and Canada, Europe, India, Burma, Cambodia, Japan and other areas giving presentations which inspired, informed and clarified. They also exposed questions and themes still needing more penetration. Consequently the contents of this publication are not only unique but they also supply a high level watershed from which further clarity and mutuality can emerge. The editors, themselves participants in the encounter, James Wiseman, OSB and Donald Mitchell are specialists who make the contents of the papers accessible to the uninitiated and informative to the specialist. This book is without parallel and is meaningful for both the person seriously interested in Buddhism, Christianity, monasticism and East-West exchanges and those who are unfamiliar with the material but ready to become richly informed.

Truly different,humble and Divine
The Gethsemani Encounter was perhaps one of the great overlooked religious moments in the past decade. In the hills of Kentucky, in the oldest Trappist monastery in the United States, monastics from all over the world gathered to dialogue,to learn,to agree and disagree. The meeting place was suggested By The Dalai Lama, who in a moving afterword says"And so for the rest of my life, the impact of meeting him will remain until my last breath."The him is Thomas Merton, who met with the Dalai Lama on his final journey through the east in 1968.The talks in this book are broken up into sections{Journey and Dialogue,Prayer and Medidtation,Method and Expierence, Growth and Development, etc.} with speakers from both Buddhist and Christian monastic tradition sharing their expierence and strength. Some of the participants are truly moving: Ven. Maha Ghosananda of Cambodia speaking briefly on THE HUMAN FAMILY,the dalia lama on THE BODHISATTVA AND SOCIETY,,PRAYER AS PATH by Pierre-francios de bethune`Mary Margaret Funk,OSB on Lectio DIVINA,and many more. An over used term, treasure trove is quite appropriate. This is a collection to return to, to glean ,to nurture the soul.TO Open This volume isto enter a holy place . Truly magnificent.

A COMTEMPLATIVE LOOK AT THE CONNECTIONS OF E. & W. RELIGION
SET IN MERTON'S ABBEY IN TRAPPIST, KY, THIS BOOK FINDS THE BASIS AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN TWO PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVES THAT ARE USUALLY THOUGHT TO BE DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED. A NEW LOOK FOR MATURE RELIGIOUS THINKING.

The Dream Home
This is a great, well written book that will educate no matter what your level of building expertise. James Mitchell has some great ideas on building that more people should be aware of. I plan on visiting his school in British Columbia and I will be building a post and beam style some day. Probably a plan referenced in this book.

An excellent book on post and beam log construction
This book may well be the "bible" of post and beam log construction. Covers in excellent detail basic to advanced post and beam design and construction. From house design, foundations, floors, walls, doors and windows, and an extensive chapter on roof design and construction. Explains log hewing with a broad axe and the use of other log shaping tools. Covers log joinery in detail. Includes hundreds of illustrations, a portfolio of color pictures of post and beam joinery, 6 appendixes, Glossary, and Bibliography.

Excellent book for college drafting course.
This is an excellent college level text.I particularly like the detailed "real world" drafting problems for the students. Also it has a very good apppendix. It is comprehensive enough that we use it in three different courses here at Vincennes University.

EXTREMELY HELPFUL
I have had this book in my drafting library for some time now. I am always using it and recommending it. The book is laid out so that you can go from beginning drafting up through advanced. It not only says what the standards are, but walks you through drafting technology so that you understand why they are like they are. I believe that anyone that is going to be doing drafting should have this in their library.

Lung Cancer: Principles and Practice

Amazon base price: $159.00

Lung cancer- a review
Pass' book is excellent, well-written, and comprehensive. It is one of the first books patients and family members should go to, though they should be cautioned that the book is written for a medical audience. Skip the first two chapters on mollecular biology which are far too technical, and go to some of the other chapters written in a detailed but comprehensive fashion. This book will prove exceptionally useful, but tough reading for many, so keep a medical dictionary and encylopedia nearby.

An excellent resource for lung cancer clinicians and patient
This second edition is an excellent, readable resource that makes few assumptions about the reader's familiarity with lung cancer, molecular biology, or cancer genetics. Contains many entirely new chapters as well as carefully updated material from the first edition. Geared to oncologists and researchers, but nonetheless a good foundation resource for patients and families who wish to learn a great deal about lung cancer and its management.

One of the best sources available
This book is loaded with technical information for the dratsman and designer. A must have for anyone who is in the mechanical technology field.

One of the best text books ever written...
This text was the basic drafting manual that I used during my technical education; its use did not end with school, however, since I refer to it frequently in my occupation. It tells everything that needs to be explained and described in the general drawing problems that might be encountered in industrial practice. It contains excellent descriptions and illustrations for: Drawing Threads, Fasteners & Springs Geometric Constructions Clear, Concise instructions in using Drafting Instruments, (before the time of Computer Aided Drafting & Desing, in any case). An Excellent overview of the Industrial Design & Development Process, (which I wish my supervisors would read). Sectional Drawing. This book is to drafting what Machinery's Handbook, of the Industrial Press, is to the metal working industries. There are a variety of Drafting Textbooks available, but none are incrementally better, let alone drasticaly better.
