Excellent Reference for 19th c. Everyday Garments
I have owned this book for years and use it often in my work as a historic garment researcher & seamstress. Copious primary source material in the form of store ads, photographs of original garments in the Museum's collection, and easy-to-understand, logical descriptions of the times and social conditions under which these clothes were worn. ...

A Kind of Magic (Mills & Boon Large Print)

Another wonderful Betty Neels book!
This is another wonderful book by English romance book author Betty Neels, her books are really a delight to read and I have found them quite addicting, I can't get enough of them and I'm always looking for her older books in used book stores which isn't always easy as the few used book stores in my town have long waiting lists for her books and as soon as they get her books they are gone, and they rarely get her books anyway because most people like her books so much that they keep them and won't part with them for anything! I was lucky to have found a copy of A Kind Of Magic that was in good condition and it is a really great book and I like the characters a guy named Fergus Cameron and a young lady named Rosie MacDonald and I like how the story took place in England and Scotland because as much as I like her books that took place in England and Holland the locale of Scotland was a welcome change. I recommend this book, it's a keeper, well at least for me it is!

FATE & A SMART SCOTTISH DOCTOR FIND THEIR FEISTY MATCH !!
COVER: Rosie had a recipe for Mr. Right ....
"The man I marry must dote on me, cherish and love me for always, even when I'm bad tempered or sneezing my head off."
Fergus Cameron certainly wasnt' likely to fit that bill. Arrogant, exasperating, absolutely determined to have his own way - he was exactly the sort of man most women found annoying - and Rosie was no exception.
Of course, she had to admit he could be charming when it suited him. But since he'd already announced that he'd found the girl he planned to marry, Rosie couldn't care less......
This heroine is so busy being good to all her family and elderly relations that she forgets to just please herself. :) She keeps telling herself that she is going to be very picky in a mate, but she has a huge heart with a limitless capacity for loving anyone, warts and all. She is a loving selfless daughter and a wonderful person and the hero is fast to catch on and quick to realize that he needs to hold on with both hands !!

A TRAVEL THROUGH HISTORY
I bought all 3 Amanda Series Paper Dolls & they are wonderful. I felt like I was with Amanda on her journey to the west and through time. She describes the clothes they wore, the foods they ate, the hardships they faced. I was at her wedding to Matthew & when the children were born. I felt what life was like on the Texas frontier & her pain when Matthew had to serve in Civil War. I hope that Betty Mills does a series on Amanda's granddaughter, Mary Megan.

Cape Cod Wampanoag Cookbook
More Patti Page's "Old Cape Cod" than a collection of recipes, The Cape Cod Wampanoag Cookbook is a wonderful concoction of good reading and favorite meals simplified. Essays are interspersed with mouth-watering and heart-warming dinners, soups, chowders, and breads. A history of the cranberry bogs winds its way through one chapter, carefully following the transition from a time when native children crawled on hands and knees to pick cranberries by hand to the modern method of wet harvesting the bogs. A childhood spent as an Indian guide for hunting and fishing expeditions is well documented in charming narratives spinkled through the book. Earl Mills' voice comes throgh in stories which are divided according to the four seasons, telling readers how his people lived according to the land.
The owner and cook of a popular Cape Cod restaurant for close to thirty years, Mills is Chief Flying Eagle of the Mashpee Wampanoags and former athletic director of the Falmouth , MA public schools. Breen, who has captured his spirit as well as a native respect for Mother Earth, has also captured Cape Cod at its best. Her thoughts on Thanksgiving are worth the price of this little gem of a book.
I read the book cover to cover and then bought it for every one on my Christmas list. Readers, eaters and cooks alike will cherish this delightful gem!

A wonderful cookbook and entertaining guide
Author of the romantic historical, The Rebel's Pledge.

I've had this cookbook for fifteen years and use it often. It contains sixty-seven kitchen tested menus for any occasion, from breakfasts, luncheons, and dinners, from the casual to the elegant. I really have enjoyed using the menus for special holidays, from an after caroling late supper, to a baby shower luncheon. The recipes are easy and fun to make. I will never part with my buffet book!

Be the best buffet lady on your block!
Everytime someone in my family had a birthday or my writing group needed to critique someone's newest 10 pages, I got elected to do the buffet. "You're so good at it," they'd say. Of course, I never told them Betty Crocker did all the work, I just followed her menu plans and table designs. And I never told them that I'd run to the library and hope no one had checked out their only copy! Finally I got tired of paying overdue fines and got my own copy at Amazon!

Just Plain Goofy
Yikes! Looks Mr. Mills needs psychiatric help, and fast!

A "down home" look at the other side...
Roy tells of his experiences in the realm of the spirit world BEFORE coming to Earth as well as a scattering of ephemeral divine events he witnessed while here. At times these accounts sound almost too bizarre to be true. For example, the time he saw the clouds open up and heaven unfold right before his eyes while out in a field, and of course his thoughts while still in his mother's womb. But you know, you can't help believing this man. The way he presents his story is too simple and sweet to be a fraud, but he left many unanswered questions. I would like to see him write a sequel and elaborate more about life on the other side, e.g. spirits who have been gone for centuries...Do they return to Earth as another being or do they continue to remain there after their life on Earth is finished? Now, I'm talking about going back to the caveman! Are we reunited with old friends, loved ones, relatives when we return? What about our pets? Birds? Butterflies? Insects? Do they have a place in heaven? And what does one do all day? Do earthly things such as sports, music, jobs, marriage, food exist? Yes, you've got it, Roy, I'm one of these who likes to get down to the nitty-gritty and I'm afraid your book doesn't quite cut it. Therefore, I implore you to write another in your same simple "down home" style that I love.

Believeable and wonderful!
I believe this man wrote from his heart. It was a book I didn't want to put down or end. Worth the reading and everyone who feels connected to God will feel the impulse of this book. For those looking for something else, or expecting the pages to be written for their educational standards...I feel for them for lacking the insight necessary to understand what the author is conveying. This is a wonderful inspiring book. All should appreciate the "gift" Roy Mills brings to us having written it for our benefit.

At Odds With Love (Mills and Boon Large Print)
Published in Hardcover by Chivers North Amer (1994)
Author: Betty A. Neels
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

Cheesy but fun!
This was the first Betty Neels book I ever read and I rather enjoyed it. The plot revolves around a kind-hearted and lovely young nurse (Jane Fox) and her "rescue" by Dr. Nikolaas van der Vollenhove, a Dutch surgeon. After Ms. Fox's grandmother, to whom she has been devoted, dies, Dr. Van der Vollenhove saves Ms. Fox from penury and substandard jobs by proposing marriage. The characters were likable and the writing style pleasant. Dr. Van der Vollenhove seemed a bit cold and paternal rather than adoring of Jane Fox, but otherwise, it was a pleasant enough story. Not your typical hero and heroine carried away on waves of sentiment and/or passion, but there is true affection by the end of it all.

Typical, but that's why we read them.
The reviewer from Georgia has the plot description. The story starts with Jane's grandmother dying. Nikolaas is the doctor on the case. He helps her out, and we all know how the story goes; she drags her animals around looking for work, and trying to avoid Nikolaas. The only part I didn't like was the private hospital she goes to for awhile. I wanted Nikolaas to make more of a fuss to get the patients the care needed. Other than that, typical fairy tale ending.

THANK HEAVEN FOR KNIGHTS IN SHINING ARMOR !
COVER: A damsel in distress ...
Jane Fox was alone and desperately in need of a friend. Not that she expected Nikolaas van der Vollenhove to apply for the position. After all, he'd said he was no knight in shining armor.
So when he rode to her rescue, she had to wonder if he was actually interested in her. Until he asked her to marry him - then she realized Nikolaas was definitely not a man in love.
Jane said yes, anyway. But only because she thought a determined woman could change him ....
This is another one of Betty Neels' strong, courageous young heroines with a heart as big as all outdoors. The hero is a wealthy doctor who needs Jane more than he knows. She fits seamlessly into his life, makes a life for her devoted lifelong servant, and gradually wins the heart of the hero and his dogs. :)
This is another fine example of Betty Neels' warmth and happily ever after artform.
