Vital addition to your Dog library
This is a well organized book that clearly defines potential skin problems of Dogs or Cats and then plots out a potential resolution that both the layman and the veterinarian alike can use to successfully assist the afflicted pet.

Helps educate the pet owner to ultimately assist the veterinarian with the proper diagnosis by delving comprehensively into the subject of skin disease, its' causative factors and curative possibilities to assist in the proper final diagnosis, which with skin ailments, is sometimes never possible to pin down.

My only wish is that a new, revised addition would be published that would reflect some of the newer drug therapies that have become available since the books' original publication date in 1997.

Strategic management of innovation
You might be curious about what the title of this book refers to. It¡¯s rather simpler than you might guess. In a common vocabulary in business, it refers to the ¡®radical innovation¡¯. Then, you might infer that the 3rd generation R&D should be the incremental innovation. Yep. You¡¯re right. But those conventional terms don¡¯t fit completely into what authors argues. There is sufficient reason to coin such neologisms. The argument of this book goes like this. Traditional market research tends to deal with explicit knowledge. Focus group, survey, structured interview, all tackle what is pre-definable or expressible in word. But could such approaches spot the next generation product? authors question. No. customers can¡¯t put into words their gut feeling needs. They could spot it only when it appears on the market. The real breakthrough in product development, more often than not, comes in unexpected way. Thus, authors pose the question, ¡®How we should manage the uncertainty?¡¯ Put in other way, ¡®how we should manage the innovation?¡¯ R&D or product development must include incremental innovation. But in this turbulent environment, it¡¯s not enough. To be the leader in the market, not follower, one should ride ahead the tide. Then the question of R&D should be the radical innovation. Break with the identifiable trend. Then what product should be devised? All R&D begins with the product concept. But now the concept should be based on what customer¡¯s gut feeling or their tacit needs. Don¡¯t make what customer wants today. Make what they want tomorrow. At this point, you might retort: ¡®Yep. You¡¯re right. But it¡¯s easier to be told than to be done. How I could do so?¡¯ Here comes the knowledge management. Customers¡¯ tacit needs tend to be buried in noise of day-to-day information flow. There are numerous reasons for such filtering out. But all in all, to be sensitive to that kind of info, the authors maintain, is to manage the organization innovative. Knowing is not doing. Doing needs the capability to do. Then innovation requires the capability building. But it¡¯s not that simple to build up. It must face resistance inside the firm itself. Radical innovation tends to be the capability-destroying one. so developing innovative product usually comes with organizational innovation.
Above is the problem authors pose to us. I think the better title of the book is ¡®Strategic management of innovation¡¯. This book is not about the specificity of R&D, but about how to manage the firm innovative. Overall tenet of the book is so close to Nonaka & Takeuchi¡¯s ¡®The Knowledge-Creating Company¡¯. But this book is written not for academic researcher but for managers in the field. Points are made in graphic way with various case studies by authors. Nonetheless, it lacks the depth of Nonaka & Takeuchi¡¯s book. I recommend to read this book with Nonaka & Takeuchi¡¯s.

great content, not so great style
The book starts out with theoretical constucts and eventually uses examples to show their relevance. I found the authors' style of writing rather awkward. The organization of the material also makes the book somewhat difficult to follow. However, the well researched material presented is worth buying the book.

Sustainable Innovation!
Authors Miller and Morris have nailed the impending transformation of R&D from its historical, product-centric past to its emerging knowledge-centric future. In addition, their focus on 'discontinuous' and 'fusion' innovation promises to lead the way for industry, in general, whose R&D functions typically produce less than one new product innovation per decade and whose new products, when they are produced, tend to fail in under four years. The authors' explicit embrace of knowledge management is also welcome, as the value of most companies now tends to rest more on the weight of their intellectual assets than on so-called 'hard' assets. Finally, this book's focus on distributed, enterprise-wide innovation signals the tearing down of R&D's overly centralized and compartmentalized profile in most firms, and offers strong support for the view that innovation should be structured as a distributed, whole-firm social process, not an administrative one. I highly recommend this book to readers interested in R&D, innovation, knowledge management, intellectual capital, organizational learning, and sustainable innovation.

All I Need to Know About Manufacturing I Learned in Joe's Garage

This book reveals some of the potential of WCM techniques.

Although the title suggests a 'how to' approach to WCM, this 'how NOT to' is a fast read which opens the door (and possibly minds) to the prospect that mass and batch production methods have inherent flaws.

This work is well written and progresses quickly into an interesting scenario anyone working in manufacturing can identify with. Contemporary relationships between departments, workers, and managers are clearly articulated and are accurately described. Management, production control and material management functions are described in great detail, and reflect current operating practices in many organizations, both large and small.

The story is told from the perspective of a Manufacturing Engineer (Sandy) from the fictional Garrett Gear Company, and chronicles efforts to build a set of garage shelves using traditional batch manufacturing techniques. The work team is comprised of volunteers from Garrett Gear and others recruited by 'Joe' (VP of Manufacturing at Garrett). This is also the story of how Sandy is introduced to WCM techniques, aided by his neighbor and counterpart, Ralph Morita of Yamachi Gear (a competitor to Garrett).

This book will have a varying value to readers, depending on their background and position in their organization. There is nothing to be gained by senior or middle management, while first line supervisors may be able to decipher the "how NOT to's" and translate them into "how to's". Both supervisors and shop floor workers can benefit by relating to situations presented and recognizing wastes introduced BY the manufacturing process.

While the book is quick to point out flaws in current mass/batch production techniques, it comes up short in terms of solid solutions that can be implemented by supervisors or workers. The work contains several logical flaws, including comparing the industrial manufacturing environment to a home project, which may be akin to comparing capital costing in terms of a household budget. Others include stabs at unions, traditional production measurements, quality personnel, specific management structures, etc...

The book espouses several 'lean production' techniques, which will be useful to any reader. It contains many simple and easy-to-remember phrases that can be used as idea 'seeds' on the shop floor. The glossary is an EXCELLENT reference which I recommend highly.

In short, I recommend the book for shop floor personnel and first line leaders, but not for the purpose for which it was intended. I recommend the book as part of the cultural change process, which is a precursor to (or perhaps parallels) any WCM/Lean Manufacturing effort. This book will open minds to possibilities that may not have been previously explored in traditionally structured organizations, and may be used best in conjunction with The Day I Learned About Quality in Joe's Garage: High Quality Made Simple, and Manufacturing Beyond Joe's Garage: Value Based Manufacturing (both works by Wm. B. Miller, not yet available).

An essential read for everybody
Our company originally bought this book because it was endorsed by Bob Lutz (one of the top business executives in the country), a Business Week writer, and numerous other leaders. We have since bought the book in large quantities because it is the best explanation of how to run a business.

The book explains how to do things simply, with high quality, utilizing effective methods that prevent mistakes. It shows how to get people involved with their own work. It shows how to keep costs (direct costs and indirect costs, such as inventory) low. And it shows how to do things RAPIDLY. Time is money.

The book also has a fantastic glossary and reading list for people who wish to go further in their education. It is a great book. It can change your life, or at least your work life.

an essential component of management education
The electronics industry requires rapid product development, quick turnaround on orders, low inventory and manufacturing costs, and high quality to satisfy customers in the face of cut-throat competition. This book has become our standard tool for building united enthusiatic teams at our company. It is easy to understand, and it conveys all the important strategies and tactics of world class manufacturing. As the president of Dolby says, it is must reading for anybody manufacturing anything. It has made the difference in our company's success, and for the motivation and financial rewards for our employees.

Fascinating Time Tapestry--with raw edges
Described as a "love story for the holiday season," this novel focuses on events in the lives of two families, mainly around Christmas, over some 63 years. I am easily hooked by the words "Christmas" and "love story", but this novel is much more than that--too much for my romantic taste. The author seems to be following the literary adage to write about what you know; he was a lawyer before he added author to his credits.

It is not clear to me which genre Bowersock is aiming for, as he seems to have three targets: a wonderful Christmas romance (reminiscent of Same Time Next Year), politics and government (the Mob, Presidential history, FBI) and Florida's seamier lifestyle. He is well versed in the latter two areas, but I prefer my fictional romance to exist in a realm less penetrated by history lessons and modern (pop) references.

The love story part is beautiful and there are many themes of value to consider in this tale, but the author's amoral attitude peeks through the chinks, as he seeks to show off his behind-the-scenes knowledge or theories re the JFK assassination. Bowersock was certainly right on back in 1994 when he predicted the computer age. Fascinating plot with constant time and scene shifts--all tied up with kelp and booze... A good read if you like your Romance served with Politics!

The Christmas Card
A truly wonderful love story. The story is so strong it grips you from the beginning to the end. Beautifully written. I have read this book at Christmas time along with other traditional Christmas stories. This book is destined be a Christmas time favorite.

Gives valuable information in one complete reference
Having previously read "Netware Professional Reference" by Karanjit Siyan, I hoped this edition would follow in the same light. This book is a real help for network administrators as it gives good examples and solutions of day to day problems.

This book is designed as a reference not a study guide. This is one of the best Intranetware books I have read to date.

I've used this book as a desk reference and it's great.
I have all of my "favorite places" marked for quick reference. The book is not organized to study for CNE exams. However, it has the information for Intranetware Network Administrators need for managing their networks. It contains a great index for quick look-ups.

This is an excellent book for beginners in accounting or business who need to understand how accounting works and what the basic principles of accounting are about. It is an extremely easy book to read ( I tell people it takes less than 50 minutes to read the entire book), yet very informative. If you want the basics of accounting, this is a good, quick book. If you are looking for depth of theory and practice, get a more thorough book.

Audio CD Version
I listened to an Audio CD version of the play and I regret to say that I found it unmoving. The Brooklyn accents of the characters seemed to fade in and out on occasion and they deep dark revelations about their personal lives seemed to be revealed without much emotion most of the time.

I really had high hopes for the drama but felt it was more gimmick than gripping.

Broken Glass
I found Broken Glass interesting but disappointing. One expects the film to hold a much deeper secret and comes away from it thinking "This story has already been told." The three main actors, Margot Leicester, Mandy Patinkin and Henry Goodman, are all marvelous and far better than the script allows. I found Elizabeth McGovern a rather strange choice for the role of Dr.Hyman's wife. I own this film because I'm a huge Mandy Patinkin fan, but I wouldn't have spent the money otherwise.

The Complaint Department
The dimensions of healing placed in contradistinction to the tyranny of complaint.

Yeah, I got snookered
I was very surprised when I ordered this book and found out that yes, indeed, it was merely a very tiny portion of what I had expected. I suppose I should have known from the price, but the description (at least at that time) did not make it clear that it wasn't the entire dictionary.

Must have more complete info before ordering...
While this may be a very thorough source for the words it covers, it should be noted in the basic information that this is ONLY 128 pages of a 15,000 page work. The description above is very misleading.

5 stars

A Light in Dark Times / Maxine Greene and the Unfinished con
Boring -- Don't waste your money folks! I thought I was going to read some great things in critical pedagogy! The title should have been "...and unfocused rantings." She tries to make these "words" or "phrases of wisdom" and all they are is nonsense. They are so high falutin' I didn't get it and this is my favorite subject!!! or were they just stupid rantings. I can not express how terribly dissapointed I was. I'll never pick up another book by her. One star is the lowest I could go, if there was a 0 rating I would have used that!
