This is one of the few books I've read that, if I were an unbeliever in God through Jesus Christ, would start me thinking in new directions towards believing. The theme remains constant: that it is impossible to not be involved in spiritual warfare, a topic that is the whole of all life. There is no neutral place in which to hide from both good and evil spiritual forces, no place of perfect indifference (a belief of itself is an evil tactic!). It is also one of the few books about spiritual warfare that is strongly anchored in the Bible, not just the author's opinions. While I disagree on a few points (e.g., that demons lead people to buy lottery tickets, but can I prove that they don't?), Miller and Peterson's work is in good alignment with the Scriptures. It is the closest thing I have found to date that wasn't somewhere out in space. It is a perfect start for new believers as well as would-be believers, and is strongly reinforced by the author's pastoral experience. I'm glad to see other writers who are not afraid to mention the sonship of Jesus Christ, rather than just the generic use of the word "God." Some of the topics discussed in this book take some Christian maturity to fully grasp, challenging some parts of different beliefs, but the overall tone is sincere, candid and sober. "Disarming the darkness" is one of the few perfect books that the enemy (the devil) prefers not to be promulgated. The enemy savors thoughts of his non-existence by people on earth, so books like this-like real believers-are the salt in his wounds. This is one enemy, the authors indirectly point out, who is beyond mercy and for whom we should not feel the least bit sorry. Merely acknowledging the enemy's existence is half the battle (to a greater spiritual understanding); the other half is "disarming" his three favorite tactics: misuse of money, sex and power. I'm glad I found this book. I am very critical of "religious" (more importantly: spiritual) books, as I am with myself when it comes to these matters. Miller and Peterson's book offers reassurance that believers are tuned to the same frequency before we get off the sinking ship. I found it surprisingly short, only 160 pages, wishing the book was longer. I hunger for words like this. I look forward to a second edition. "Disarming the Darkness" should be required reading for all Christians, and also for those who are considering conversion in the slightest. Get it, read it!

This book, like many of Miller's works, blends imagination and 'humanness' with the wonderfully liberating foundation of the Word. There are so many off-the-wall presentations dealing with the influence of evil in our lives, this book is a joy to experience. Without underestimating the power and presence of the Evil One in the world, Miller clearly puts the proper perspective on the Christians stand. For Miller, the operative word here is Christian. If you are not fully given to Christ and open to the protection and leading of the Holy Spirit, you can expect problems and pain. If, on the other hand, we are true vessels for Him ... there is no fear and no risk. Calvin Miller is an expert in practicality and scripture ... a perfect blend.

The book offers an intersting collection of Hume's minor writing. A must for anyone interested in Hume's philosphy. Nicely printed on acid-free paper the book is good value for money.

The biblical term "stewardship" has been used so often to mean "fund-raising" that in my church we've had to stop using it in order to focus attention back onto its message that "The earth is the Lord's and everything in it," while "He has given us dominion over all the works of his hands." So it was with absolute glee that I discovered this unique book on true Christian stewardship. Eugene Grimm asserts, "Fund-raising is a financial matter. Stewardship is primarily a spiritual matter. Fund-raising is concerned with raising money for the budget. Stewardship relates to how we live out our commitment to Jesus Christ.... Stewardship is more than financial giving.... Stewardship is what we do after we say we believe." This book gives detailed, practical counsel on how to go about supporting the Lord's work in a local congregation, and it refreshingly insists that "When we look at principles for vital stewardship, we are looking at principles that can help people grow spiritually." Randy Alcorn writes more profoundly on the biblical principles underlying stewardship, and Larry Burkett provides more detailed advice for submitting our personal finances to the lordship of Christ. But after spending twelve years reviewing all kinds of literature on the topic of stewardship education, I know of no book that I can recommend more highly for pastors and church leaders who want to conduct an ongoing "stewardship campaign" that is intended not to raise money but to raise Christians.

As you will be able to read in the new Foreword by Donald Broadbent of the University of Oxford, this book has had a major impact on psychology and helped achieve the switch to cognitive psychology. This book triggered much of the research that lead to Ulric Neisser's book "Cognitive Psychology". The five stars I gave are related to the importance of this book - when reading this book in 2001, without taking this background into account, I would still rate it 4 stars.

This book argues that our behavior is guided by our plans. People move from sub-goal to sub-goal until their purposes are achieved. A basic concept to explain that is the feedback loop which comes from engineering and is know as the TOTE model inside the NLP community. When NLPers try to model a person's strategy (e.g. for taking a decision), they are in fact looking for the basic building blocks of the TOTE. This books contains a chapter on "Plans for Speaking", showing the link between Miller and Chomsky, another father of modern cogintive science (and NLP).

Of course, if you just want to grasp the basic concept, there is no need to read this book given that many books that are linked to practical applications of cogitive science (such as NLP) will include the model. For instance, the first part of the third chapter of my book "7 Steps on Emotional Intelligence" is built around on the TOTE model.

I consider this book a "must" for any scolar of cognitive science in general and of NLP in particular that wants some background on their domain.

If you are certain that you have no interest in studying outside the U.S. or Canada, then this book provides a good amount of information on the business schools on which you will be focusing. It also provides a nice summary table of these schools as well as a short section dedicated to the GMAT exam. This is the perfect book if you need to narrow down or even just select the business schools in which you may be interested. It can be particularly useful in assuring you don't accidentally overlook a program for which you are well suited. The financial aid section is also pretty helpful. Beware that, if you are applying to a competitive business school, you will want to do additional research for your "Why I want to attend your business school" essay beyond what is covered in this book.

Barron's collectively assembles the information you are looking for in an easy-to-read format that makes the scary idea of going to business school a little less intimidating. The book breaks down each school, discussing the programs available, admissions info and general data regarding the campuses.

The Barron's Guide also has a helpful section on financial aid and what programs various schools excel in. The Barron academic profiles are comprehensive and are sure to help an prospective student in making a decision that is sure to be one of the biggest of their lives!

I never learned about the Armenian Genocide in school. I'd never heard about it until I read a book which mentioned it, sparking my curiosity enough to read this book. It's another tragic story of man's inhumanity to man. Very much like the Holocaust of WW II. The Armenians believed they were being relocated, but instead found themselves being forced to travel without food, water and sanitation. Along the way they were robbed of what few possessions they were allowed to take with them. They were tortured, raped, shot, tossed over cliffs and hurled down mountainsides. They were stripped of their clothing and forced to walk for days on end until they died from exposure to the elements. Men, women, children and the elderly were all subjected to the same obscene cruelties. The few bright spots in the book included Turks and Kurds who protected Armenians at their own expense, and Armenians who managed to survive terrible tragedies and come through it all still believing in a just God and in the essential goodness of their fellow man.

If you could give six stars, this book would get it. It should be required reading for high school or college students. It should be required reading for revisionist historians like Stanford Shaw, Bernard Lewis, Justin McCarthy, and Heath Lowry--or any other Turkish "historian". Putting aside all the politics and theories, this book simply focuses on the suffering of the Armenians who went through the Genocide of 1915. It is as much a sociology book as a historical one. The parallels between the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust become obvious as one reads the accounts. It is an invaluable primary source for further study of the Armenian Genocide, as most of the survivors are dying off. It is an easy read, but you will probably find yourself disgusted or teary-eyed during much of it. It is objective, simply telling the facts, including descriptions of good, helpful Turks. If you know little about the subject, this is a great place to start. For those who get to caught up in the politics of events, this is a great book to remember the horrific suffering of these human beings. And for those revisionists and neo-Young Turks who still deny the wholesale extermination of the Armenians, I can't think of a better book to force someone to start accepting the truth.

This book by the Miller's is truly a masterpiece that captures what many Armenians feel deep within their hearts. The accounts from the survivors are truly disturbing and make any Armenian truly proud to have surivived such atrocities. This book serves as a testament to the 1.5 million Armenians killed between 1915 and 1923. I can say this much... I and my family will never forget!

With a definite Pentecostal/charismatic slant. One delightful feature is the inclusion of responsorials with strong words of praise from many different sources, including the Church Fathers!
