A Daring Escape to Freedom!!!
Ellen and William Craft were a young (mid-20's) slave couple who made a daring escape to freedom. Light-skinned Ellen cut her hair short and dressed in the suit and tophat of a white planter. Since she was illiterate, her husband William made a sling for her arm, so she had an excuse not to sign hotel registers. And since she had a womanly voice, the couple devised a poultice tied around her jaw indicating she had a bad toothache and could not speak. William played the role of his white massa's slave. And the couple traveled by train, steamship, and wagon to their destination in the north. They soon became popular lecturers in the United States and Europe. This is a remarkable story of daring and bravery and should be read by everyone. Anyone who wants to introduce their children to good historical fiction should get them The Journal of Darien Duff, an Emancipated Slave, The Diary of a Slave Girl, Ruby Jo, and The Journal of Leroy Jones, a Fugitive Slave.

Engrossing
I read this for a college history survey course before it was mistakenly announced that the book was out of print. The book was dropped from the syllabus, but I am glad I read it anyway.

The first and shortest part of the book is William Craft's powerful account of how he and his wife Ellen executed a daring escape from servitude in Georgia. Their plan was remarkable in its ingenuity: The almost white Ellen, outfitted with a master's clothes and a poultice on her face to prevent incriminating speech with strangers, and her husband William, disguised as a servant, escaped to freedom in the north. Travelling by rail, the pair exultantly crossed over into Canada and from thence headed for England.

The second part of the book is a third person summary of the couple's travels after their ambitious escape. It follows them from Georgia through the slave and free states, in which they were well received and protected (especially in Boston), up to Halifax and across the water to England. I found the final two thirds of the book the most enjoyable, as it treated of foreign travel, in which I have a keen interest. Both portions of the book are beautifully written and often gripping. I hope a few of my classmates read this before that announcement. This book is both pleasurable to read and historically vital.

The Freedom you will get when you read this book.
This book is a captivating account of the injustices of slavery and a amazing story of two fugitives running for there freedom. This book is a great story that should be taught in schools and should not be ignored in American History classes. It opened my mind to the horrors slavery actually caused. It represents a part of our history that should never be repeated. 5 plus stars.

volevo essere un ballerino
Richard Condon's "Mile High" is one of the smartest, most exciting thrillers in the entire canon of American popular fiction. It was published the same year as Mario Puzo's "The Godfather." Both books feature a mafia leader known as Don Vito (interestingly, each book also has a minor character named Coppolla). There are numerous similarities between Puzo's book and Condon's, but Condon's is definitely the more intelligent and ambitious of the two. The story hits upon many of the highlights (or, perhaps, lowlights) of American history: slavery, Prohibition, the Great Depression, McCarthyism, etc. The book starts out like a runaway train, and concludes with one of the most gripping showdowns in print. There is about a 100-page stretch early in the book where Condon slows his plot down with excessive detail about the family business that is at the core of this superthriller. But from about page 200 onward, the novel is as inescapable as car careening through the loops and lifts of really devious roller-coaster.

Wow!
I defy eny reader of this book to conclude that it is a novel or a non-fiction work.It is absolutely breath taking - I couldn't put it down. A terrific read. I found it in a library in Palm Springs. If you can find a copy, it will be worth your time!

Thorough, up to date (2000) and well written
This book was recommended as a textbook for a 4th year course in real estate development and it reads like one. It is well organized and covers this broad subject with detailed, practical information in a systematic way.

Most of all I enjoyed the two real life case study storys (of the development of an office building and a high-rise apartment) that weave through the chapters. These were very candidly told by the developers themselves and give the real picture of the trials and tribulations of large project real estate development.

Numerous listings of information sources, web sites, and bibliographies at the end of each section makes this book a 'keeper' reference text.

Market, marketability and feasibility studies
This book so clearly articulates the pivotal role of the triad of market, marketability and feasibility studies in the field of real estate development. While the book does not attempt to be all encompassing, the text is dense with financial and other risk analysis distilled from the experience of the authors and contributors.

Although at times it felt like the shudder of taking an ice cold shower, I finished the book feeling refreshed and invigorated to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the risk-reward tradeoff in the development business.

Barbie Friends
Our family loves this book. The sentences are nicely written to encourage reading skills and stories are for and about little girls who love Barbie to encourage finishing the challenge of reading the whole book. Amy and Michelle are good friends to each other, and as I have found with any Barbie story, Barbie is a good role model: fun, wholesome, encouraging... The main story line is two best friends who are going to be in different classes at school the next year. They are feeling sad, so to cheer themselves up they visit Barbie.com, when they do that they are invited to take a virtual tour or a real tour if Barbie's Home. They accept and find themselves right with Barbie. They have a fun afternoon with visitng Barbie's horse and playing ball topped of by Strawberry smoothies in Barbie's kitchen. Barbie helps them understand that even if they are in different classes they can be friends by relating her own experience when Midge had moved away while they were in school. The girls go home and are much encouraged. All in all, it's a great story, and who wouldn't want to visit Barbie?

The Poet as Revolutionary - the Poetry of Leonel Rugama
Leonel Rugama is a legendary poet among the prolific lineage of Nicaraguan poets (there are probably more published poets per capita in Nicaragua than any other country in the world)., this bi-lingual book is comprised of his complete writings, 139 pages of mostly poetry, as well as memories of Rugama by his mother and his comrade-in-arms Omar Cabezas. The life and writings of Leonel Rugama do indeed conjure such words as "legendary", "mythical", and "mystery". He was killed on January 15, 1970 at the age of not quite 21 while fighting Somoza's national guard with three comrades. He had written his own epitaph, a poem entitled "Epitaph", (two poems entitled "Epitaph", in fact; one is dated 1969, the other is dated november/december 1969). The poet is also the subject of poetry; he his portrayed in Ernesto Cardenal's "Oraculo sobre Managua". This book is the work of one of the important poets of the Sandinista generation in Nicaragua (a country that, as I said, produces generation after generation of poets). The poems are peopled by the poorest of the poor in Nicaragua. "Como los santos" ("Like the saints") is a direct and intimate dialogue with the Nicaraguan poor, in a Spanish very much, I assume, of the 'hoods of Managua and Leon (I can't find half the words in this poem in any of my 3 Spanish/English dictionaries). Is Rugama's poetry not only "about" but also "of" the barrios, the 'hoods, of the Nicaragua of the '60s and '70s? Well, in the book there is a photograph of 3 proletarian Nicaraguan laundry women standing in front of a Rugama poem spray-painted on a wall. Most, but not all of the poems are political, very much in the tone of revolutionary-as-religious-vocation (Rugama was also a seminarian who worked with the poor before he joined the Sandinista Front). But the poems certainly don't come off as political sloganeering, as is often complained of political poetry. This is very powerful, intense, original poetry. It does in fact live up to what you would expect of a poet who would prophetically die within months of most of these writings. Recommended.

Packed With Knowledge!
Today, business is complicated - so complicated in fact, that it's no longer possible for a company to make all of its decisions at the top. Steve Yearout, Gerry Miles and Richard Koonce have a simple message for anyone competing in these complex times: When you can no longer rely on a few talented individuals to run the entire show, developing leadership throughout your organization becomes your most critical business strategy. This book should be required reading for executives who fail to grasp this essential connection between employee development and success. Cleverly weaving informative case studies with engaging concepts, the authors explain how to nurture a sustainable supply of leaders within an organization, from top to bottom. We [...] strongly recommend this book - and its systematic approach to identifying and grooming future leaders - to human resources development and training professionals, executive coaches and business executives of any stripe.

Clearly written, accurate, and informative.
We used Offa's Dyke Path South by Kay et al to walk from Capel-y-Ffin to Knighton in the Summer of 1998. The trail was clearly and accurately explained and historical notes made our three day journey even more enjoyable. The maps were good, however I would recommend that you still take a compas and ordnance survey map, just in case. In conclusion, we found the Guide was well worth the purchase price and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone considering walking Offa's Dyke Pathway.

Tillinghast's Master Touch
Continuing the standard of excellence he established with The Stonecutter's Hand, Tillinghast has evolved a style indicative of a poet at his zenith--a voice blending the public and the personal, the classically translucent and the romantically electric. Approachable yet profound, Tillinghast has obtained the high water mark a poetry reader loves.

My Favorite Christmas Story
I get a new Christmas Story book every year. I stumbled across this one several years ago and it instantly became my favorite. I look forward to reading the message each year and it is now a favorite gift to give to friends.

One of the best books I've ever read!
I am 6 years old and my mom read this book to me tonight. This book is not scary. It's good because it teaches you about the love of Jesus Christ.

A Holiday Must for All Children
This poignant tale of a generous little tree who gives wholly of himself to those around him reminds us all of the true message of Christmas and the sacrifice that each parent makes for his child. It's a moving legend for all ages and a wonderful gift for loved ones.
