THE STEP BETWEEN CONTAINS DANGER
The Step Between is one in a series of novels about reluctant PI Carole Ann
Gibson. Carole Ann is a former Washington, DC Defense Trial Lawyer who left
her criminal law practice for a partnership in a security firm. Carole Ann's
partner is former DC homicide detective, Jake Graham. In her new role as
partner of GGI, Carole Ann reviews and writes contracts as well as takes
administrative control over some of the accounts.

The Step Between opens with Carole Ann and Jake accepting a case from the
city's richest man to find his missing daughter. After taking that case
things go awry for GGI. A routine surveillance job uncovers three corpses and
Jake's wife is kidnapped. Carole Ann and Jake are caught in a web of deceit,
lies, and murder and the only way out is through discovering the cause of the
problems.

The Step Between is action packed and will leave readers searching for the
rest of the Carole Ann Gibson mysteries.

Excellent!
Once again, Penny Mickelbury has weaved a tale of suspense and intrigue that kept me turning pages. Carole Ann's struggle to accept the harsh realities of her past as she builds a new life through her business and budding(but fleeting in this book) relationship with Warren Forchette humanizes her even as she works to discover why CGI has been targeted by unknown perpetrators. Ms. Mickelbury portrays Carole Ann's vulnerabilities without making her appear wimpy or weak. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Thriller fans are going to have fun with this exciting read
Her associates and superiors considered Carole Ann Gibson a very good attorney when she abruptly placed her law degree in cold storage. Tired of the justice system's endless swinging doors, Carole Ann formed a partnership with Jake Graham. Their firm, Gibson, Graham International (GGI) provides investigative and security services. After nearly dying on their last case, Carole Ann vows never to place herself in that type of danger gain. However, she quickly finds her reneging on her personal promise when she and Jake take on two different clients whose cases converge into a nightmare that leaves everyone in peril.

DC wealthiest person, Richard Islington hires GGI to find his missing daughter, though every indication leads to the conclusion she voluntarily left on her own. At the same time, On Shore Manufacturing asks the team to make discreet inquiries into the company trying to take them over. On the surface, the two cases seem miles apart, but soon they merge in a way that leaves GGI under siege and its operatives in danger.

The first two Carole Ann Gibson mystery novels were enjoyable, well-written stories. However, the third entry, THE STEP BETWEEN, is such a superbly plotted tale, it makes its excellent predecessors seem pale by comparison. Penny Micklebury creates likable characters that will garner audience empathy and attention. The author fully develops the two prime subplots before merging them into a fabulous story line that seems to stay one step ahead of the reader. Ms. Micklebury is an artist who leaves her audience copiously satisfied yet salivating for more.

throughly enjoyable first book
i throughly enjoyed the book. it was refreshing to read characters that were lesbians, but their lesbianism was not central to the storyline, just who/what they happened to be outside of their respective jobs. as in any relationship, when two differnt job responsibilities show signs of straining a relationship, the parties involved work things out, or go their separate ways. in this case, the main characters, gianna and mimi, were able to work things out and build a continuing relationship

easy reading, fast paced enjoyable book
First let me say I usually don't enjoy mysteries, with the exception of Valerie Wesley-Wilson. I enjoy the Tamara Hayle series. However,a co-worker said you should read this, I said well I have nothing else so okay. I read the book in one day, it was a touching, easy reading book. Something you might want to take to the pool or beach. Gianna and Mimi are great.

Highly disappointed
This book started off extremely slow and never did pick up to the pace that I was expecting. I had heard so many good things about this author and her books, I was excited to read it, but I could have left it on the shelf. I guess I should not have read it after the fast action pace of Supreme Justice. But, I won't be deterred. I have another book by this author and hopefully will like it better than this one

Builds Momentum
...this book started out slow.

However, once you got past the introductions, it picked up the pace with lightning speed. There was a lot of information about Louisiana culture, one that I hadn't realized was so different from the rest of the US.

An interesting read about a woman determined to find out who killed her husband, I endorse this book to anyone willing to trudge through the first few chapters.

Carole Ann Gibson is here to stay.

Supurb Storytelling
If the measure of a good book is that it totally captivates you such that you miss the first 2 (two) boarding calls for a flight out of town, then this a good book. I absolutely loved the authors ability to draw the reader into the story and not let them go until the very end. A definate page turner and left me with my mouth hanging open. (unconciously of course) I also loved the talk of New Orleans and the issues surrounding race, color, Creole vs. Cajun and all of the concpets indigenous to Louisiana. I was so impressed with the novel that about 1/2 way through this book, I immediately ordered her other 2 books. I truly hope the same depth and richness are present. Very, very good book and a must read for anyone who enjoys suspense, drama and wonderfully descriptive novels .

Not as good as "One Must Wait"
"Where to Choose" was not as good as Mickelbury's first Carol Ann Gibson Mystery, "One Must Wait," which I found very enjoyable. "Where to Choose" has a promising plot, but it lacks the wonderful twists, turns, and surprises of its predecessor. Potentially interesting story elements, such as an early alliance between Carol Ann (C.A.) and a journalist (a profession of which C.A. is not fond), go nowhere. Too often C.A's male friends drop everything else in their lives to fly to her side to protect her from any peril. With so many guardians to take care of her every need, she seems more an artless victim than a cunning sleuth. As a result, in the only real risky situation she encounters in this book, she makes a really stupid move. It seemed that too much time was spent describing C. A.'s emotional state and the strong bonds between C. A. and her male protectors. The action throughout "One Must Wait", which gave birth to those bonds, was much more fun to read.

"Where to Choose" could have been as good as "One Must Wait", but all of the kinks were not worked out. Nevertheless, I think that the characters in this series are so appealing and have so much potential that, as a result of my enjoyment of the first book, "One Must Wait", I look forward to reading the third installment of this series.

The Gibson mystery is great due to a superb role model

Two Americans (a Black and a Mexican) share a dream that they make happen when they build Southern California's Jacaranda Estates. The duo firmly believes that Blacks and Mexicans could not only harmoniously live together but that the sharing and understanding of the diversity of the two cultures will lead to a warm and lasting friendship. For the next five decades, twenty-five Black and twenty-five Mexican families share the beautiful dream.

However, even Eden had a serpent enter. Jacaranda Estates is no exception to the reptile invasion as a gang takes over the playground, turning it into their headquarters. They terrorize the entire community. A resident Grayce Gibson asks her daughter to learn why the police are ignoring their plight?

A widow for over a year, Carole Ann is excited to leave Washington DC after successfully uncovering her spouse's killers. Almost from the moment she arrives at her mother's home, Carole Ann begins to investigate the situation, concluding that law enforcement officials are either ignoring or condoning the gang's cowering of the community. Even though she places herself in danger several times, Carole searches for the truth.

The second Carole Ann Gibson mystery is a better tale than its wonderful predecessor was. Carole Ann is a genuine character, who is comfortable being a Black woman even as she is well aware of racism and sexism. She is a role model of female empowerment, not fearing to fight injustice no matter the personal cost or danger. The execution of the who-done-it is brilliant and the portrayal of race relations between Mexican-Americans and African-Americans is stunningly informative. Penny Micklebury is a talent worth reading by fans interested in a wonderful female amateur sleuth, starring in a fabulous series.

Not what I expect
I did not like this book at all. I really thought this was going to be a really good mystery book but I was wrong. I do not recommend this book.

I Couldn't Get Into This Book!
I have read the first two books in the series and loved them!I received the third installment after I had already started reading "Paradise." It moved very slow for me and I couldn't connect with the characters. Micklebury is an excellent writer and even though I didn't like this story, I love her writing and will continue to support.

Accrual Way To Die

A great addition to this mystery series
As a defense lawyer with her own security firm, co-owned with Jake Graham, African-American Carol Ann Gibson lives the American dream. Carol and Jake have offices on both coasts and are so popular they have a large international clientele.

Their latest customer is the Caribbean nation Isle de Paix, who recently had a bloodless coup that replaced its Communist leader with an individual friendly to the West. The island country wants to become a tourist haven to build up its fledgling economy and top rate security is a must. Upon first glimpse, Carol Ann thinks she entered Eden, but though feeling idyllic, she sets out to enforce security and insures roads are built so that an infrastructure can begin to form.

However even paradise can be interrupted when snakes are about, especially since the road will destroy the lucrative cash crop marijuana. Soon a man keeps popping up who may be a dangerous felon or part of the DEA. Pirates seem to sail freely on all sides of the island, leaving Carol Ann to wonder what is going on and the determination to learn who is interfering with paradise.

The fantastic heroine is a believable person who wants to make the world a better place. Her partner is a hunk and the support cast (on the isle and in the courtroom) helps readers understand what drives Carol. The dynamic story line relegates race to a minor bar of local politics even as the reader obtains a different taste then normally seen of an island paradise. As usual, Penny Mickelbury escorts her audience on a tour of Paradise with this superbly written mystery.
