An excellent book about a great physicist
This book is one of the best expositions I have seen of J. Robert Oppenheimer. As everyone knows, he gained international fame as the 'Father of the Atomic Bomb'.But Oppenheimer was more than that.He was a very complex and enigmatic person, and at the heart of it all, a true genius.Michelmore brings out every aspect of this remarkable man's personality and life very well.Especially interesting, and not seen much elsewhere, is his account of Oppenheimer's years as a Professor at Berkeley, and his relations with his students. The best aspect of the book is that, most importantly, Michelmore portrays the true image of Oppenheimer as the role model of the scientist with a conscience.Facing tremendous moral dilemmas after the bombs were dropped on Japan, and becoming the unfortunate victim of a witch hunt, Oppenheimer retired into his own private world after experiences as a top Government advisor. As the Director of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, he became a kind of oracle who discoursed about world peace and the moral responsibilities of scientists.Michelmore portrays very well the events in this final period of Oppenheimer's life.Overall, he has written a very enlightening and thought provoking book about one of the most important persons of the twentieth century.I will strongly recommend it to anyone interested in Robert Oppenheimer and his life.
