THE MOST IMPORTANT TRACK BOOK IN TEN YEARS!
Can a book make a loud SWOOSH? This one does -- the sound of a gigantic information void suddenly filling. It is a wonderfully encompassing coverage of dinosaurian and other ancient tracks of Europe, coupled, when appropriate, with well-informed comparisons to track types world-wide. Superbly illustrated with some of the most beautiful trackway photos I have seen published, and by abundant, carefully thought-out drawings, the person interested in either dinosaur or other ancient European tracks who misses this book will be as Sherlock Holmes without his magnifying glass. It is well-written in a style that should please the broad spectrum of readers from those just casually interested in ancient animals and their tracks, through the most serious of professional paleontologists and paleo-ichnologists (researchers of ancient traces). In fact, it is difficult to imagine any reader who would not appreciate and learn from this book and want to keep it accessible for years of useful reference, as well. Also, some significant re-interpretations of specific tracks or trackways that had been differently interpreted in earlier publications by various authors will appeal to the mystery lover in most of us. Trackways, after all, provide us the most dramatic insight into the dynamics of dinosaurs and other ancient animals that we will ever study or just enjoy, unless science fantsy becomes reality and Jules Verne's "Time Machine" volume becomes clearly prescientient. Meantime, "All aboard!" via the next best transport: Lockley and Meyer's DINOSAUR TRACKS...

Great historical fiction!
I first heard of this book about a year ago when the co-authors, a husband and wife team from New York were interviewed on t.v. I enjoy historical fiction and really enjoy mysteries; it's not often you can find both.
"The Dutchman" takes place in New York City in 1664 when it was called New Amsterdam. The Schout (sheriff) Pieter Tonneman is trying to solve a couple of murders during the time when the people of this "small" town are also concerned about the invasion of the English. Although one might think a story of this time is dull or stuffy, it is not. It's very interesting. The authors also throw in little known, but interesting facts. For example Wall Street was there from the very beginning, but not as a financial center as we know it now. It literally was a wall used as a protector against invaders. Also it tells about an island close by called Brueckelen, which is now Brooklyn.
When I first started looking for this book, it was very hard to find. It was already out of print, although it had been published in 1992. I couldn't find it in bookstores , nor in my library. But now I see it's available in hardback and paperback here on ... (this website). So if you like a mystery that has a little different twist and can find a copy I suggest you try this book out.

A trip down nostalgia lane...
THE PLOT Esther Breslau is a Jewish immigrant who has found a job working as a photographer in the graft-filled world of 1895 Manhattan. John Tonnerman is an honest cop, a rare commodity on a police-force filled with those on the take and in a city where your innocence depends on the size of your pocketbook.

Esther takes a picture during a riot and the thugs notice and come after her. A reporter she's been working with has the plates but the thugs worry about what he knows and take matters into their own hands to silence him forever.

John and Esther try to figure it all out.

WHAT I LIKED / DIDN'T LIKE The characters are numerous but sufficiently different that they don't run together. A few of the characters will likely show up in future stories, and hopefully were fleshed out for that reason. The reporter is fleshed out a little too much at the start considering he's the one who is killed, but it is the first in the series, and Meyers had to introduce Esther enough at the start that you get to know the reporter a little too well for a corpse.

The research was impeccable, and the epilogue is a nice touch to separate fact from fiction. The writing is first-rate and the settings are alive with the time. Each image portrays the world of the time, and the reader is transported easily with each page.

One of the best historical mysteries I have ever read, and one of the better mysteries period.

An Inspirational Book for All-Read it!
On the cover of the new Teen Ink book What Matters, it claims that it's "telling it like it really is." This could not be more truthful. Filled with emotional and refreshingly honest stories, teens reveal their most personal, life-altering moments and the values that they have come to cherish and live by. This book describes feelings and explores questions and challenges that every teen experiences, no matter what their age. Anyone who picks up this extraordinary book will find numerous stories that are easy to relate to, inspirational and insightful. What Matters contains stories of loss, love, pain and joy that move the reader in unexpectedly powerful ways. Memories of your own life will come flooding back to you, stirring up emotions and providing new insight into your own pivotal life moments. This book displays how teens really feel and think about life, and are far from being the thoughtless, self-absorbed, immature beings that is so often their stereotype. The love that is continually expressed in these stories for mothers, fathers, grandparents, friends and innumerable others warms the heart quickly and causes you to reflect on your own relationships and what truly matters to you. There is a story for everyone, but I loved every single one, and I am sure you will too! It is remarkable to read what teens all over the world have gone through and how they have emerged from it with a positive outlook and a clarity that many adults do not have, and may never will. "Experience is not what happens to you; it's what you do with what happens to you"-Aldous Huxley. This quote completely captures the real intention of this book; to give teenagers a chance to share how they have taken their experiences, grown from them and now realize what matters to them. Riveting, touching and above all, sincere, Teen Ink's latest book will provide you with wisdom gained directly from the lives of teens and I promise it will touch your heart!

Not the best in the series
Although the desciptions and details of this Civil War mystery were very interesting and obviously well-researched, the plot was not as tight as previous Tonneman books. While character development was fair, not great, the very short chapters seemed to jump from place to place in the city - a little helter skelter. Overall I would recommend this book, but again, the earlier ones are better.

The best in historical mystery
In 1864 New York City is divided over the Civil War. However, none of the residents are split over a rumor that a militia of Kentuckians are poised to burn down the city in an act of terrorism. Almost no one believes it since the residents mostly support the democratic party and think Lincoln and his cohorts are the source of the rumors.

Not even thirty, Peter Tonneman is already a weary journalist on the New York Evening Post, whose assignment is the nation. Peter learns that the rumor has a lot of substance as Morgan's Raiders have been seen in the vicinity. Now all he has to do is prove it before he loses his life.

The sixth book in the Meyers' "Tonneman family" saga is a brilliant novel that brings to life the various prejudices that shaped the Civil War. Peter like his ancestors of the past two centuries, is a wonderful lead character and the historical factoids add a taste of authenticity to a well written, exciting historical novel. Anyone who enjoys historical fiction will want to read the entire six books that breathlessly describes two hundred years of New York City (starting when it was New Amsterdam), turning this into one of the best series in the genre.

Excellent reporting. Engrossing read.
Of the 3 books currently available concerning the Capano-Fahey case, this looked to be the best. It did not disappoint. The book was written by a reporter who covered the case from beginning to end, Cris Barrish. His grasp of the details of the case and descriptions of the way the case impacted the community make the book truly enthralling. The writing style is excellent, never too wordy. My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is that the author(s) were a little too vehement in their dislike for Capano and were not as objective as they could have been. However, that doesn't mean I don't highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in finding out what happened to Anne Marie Fahey. The reviewer who said the book was boring is plain wrong. It's as much a "couldn't put it down" book as I've read in the true crime genre.

A captivating story, extremely well researched and written!!
Mr. Barrish has captured an intriguing story with an insight that only someone who has followed this tragedy from it`s beginning could possibly have written. The story itself is fascinating with its subplots of family turmoil, sexual adventures, drug abuse, political connections, and eventually murder. Mr. Barrish`s coverage of the trial and his ability to add new and insightful details of Capano`s personal life made this book a must read . The author has added much to an already riveting story. His closeness to the story can be felt. He has been able to add to this story by his obvious closeness to this murder story. Mr. Barrish was able to take you into the minds and hearts of the people who were touched by Ann Marie Fahey. He let you know the intimate details of local police officials, the prosecutors, witnesess, and seems to have been able to talk with almost evryone except the defendant himself about this crime.I can recommend this book highly to readers because of its captivating subject and the quality of Mr. Barrish`s writing. This a definite made for TV piece of work. Thumbs up for a quality investigation and reporting on a most intiguing sexual/murder/courtroom drama.

I couldn't put it down -- engrossing; packed with suspense
Having followed Cris Barrish's reporting of this case for three years, I bought "Fatal Embrace '' expecting a comprehensive retelling of this crime. But Barrish and Peter Meyer added new dimensions to the story, from their mysterious opening about a cooler being found in the ocean through the pain of the Faheys to the arduous investigation that resulted in Tom Capano's arrest and conviction. The writers gave me a bird's eye view of Anne Marie and Tom's crazy relationship, one that the other books on this topic didn't come close to matching. I'd highly recommend this to anybody who is interested in this case or wants to read a thrilling crime book.

Huh?
Never have I been as perplexed about a book as with this selection.Aside from the back that the writing style/ language is droning, montone and without texture of any kind, I don't know what the book was aiming to explain. The story is Boring-
I had to search high and low for details about the re-incarnation aspects. This subject, which claims to be the main one of this book actually takes a back seat to the authors mundane tales of dressage, and I supposes tales of persecution.
I am usually delighted by a nice photo section, but here again I was mystified by the selection: a photo of the author at age 2, age 2 1/2, age 7, age 12, another age 12, different headshot pose, one of the author in 1981 next to a horse, another in 1989 with two horses and "a colleague"- no identification , another photo of the author on a horse, late 1980's, another horse photo with the author, 1989, another of the author (surprise!) with a horse, 1991, and then a headshot of the author 1997, and then a different pose 1998.No other photos of persons, objects, buildings, streets, family members documents- basically nothing besides that author in her dresssage get-up ,or a studio portrait of her face. This is so eerie.
I have read hundreds and hundreds of biographies, memoirs, including dozens of narratives of people's experiences with past life regressions and the like. This one is a doozie, this lady is just plain flaky and a poor storyteller as well.Sorry- add me to the extensive list of people who the author claims to be persecuted by.

terrific story, touching portrayal.
I read and re-read Ms. Karlen's book and found it to be a heartfelt commentary on the persistence and tenacity of the human spirit. I believe this book and Lance Armstrong's book both illustrate how one person can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and emerge a winner.

Was she really Anne Frank reincarnated?
This is the long--awaited English translation of "Und die Woelfe heulten," the controversial bio-novel in which Swedish writer Barbro Karlen claims to be the reincarnation of Anne Frank -- yes, THE Anne Frank who wrote famous diary. The book created quite a stir in the German-speaking world when it first came out in 1997. There were angry protests, as well as attempts to stop its publication, on the part of a small segment of the Jewish population who believed in neither reincarnation nor freedom of speech -- all of which I reported in "Life and Soul" magazine (London) in 1998.

Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed, and the book was published. I'm giving it five stars -- not because I really believe she was Anne Frank (I'm skeptical) but as a vote of free speech for a very brave author. The book raises some real questions about how issues from one life might be carried over into another, and how they might be resolved. Regardless of whether you decide the story is fact or fiction, "And the Wolves howled" is a very thought-provoking read!

Swiss Photographer's History!
I was a little disappointed with this collection of Swiss photographer Karlheinz Weinberger's work because I expected more photos from the 1950's that he published under the pseudonym "Jim" for the gay magazine Der Kreis. There is only a small section of about 20 pages devoted to his gay photography for this magazine. However, what black & white photos there are of his gay models are very good. The rest of the book is broken down into sections showcasing his involvement with rebels-1960's Zurich youth that were rebelling (like the youth in America) against the established authority, and sections on Rockers and Bikers (Hell Angels, etc.). This book is filled with wonderful black & white, and many large color shots of the youth (male & female) from that era. It is a great look back into the history of the confused and turbulent 1960's. The introductions are a great asset and help in explaining the photos of Karlheinz.

Karlheinz had a unique way of capturing real people in natural surroundings, in provocative and sometimes humorous situations that will live on in history because of his special talent. I learned a lot about this Zurich photographer I didn't know already, so I can say I'm better off than I was before I bought this book. I just wish they would have included more of his work from the time he started in1948 at Der Kreis.

Please do not waste your money....I did!
I ordered this book before it was published (the English version), and am very sorry I did. I was expecting a book full of detailed information about implementing SAP on NT...that is not what I got. The authors all work for iXOS (a company with close ties with SAP), and it seem no more than a marketing exercise for them. I would be very surprised if it took them more than 1 weekend to write this book. The book is only 250 pages, but 59 pages are dedicated to telling you how to install/upgrade SAP (version 3.x or lower)...It has only just been published but 4.x is not covered! The first 60 pages are pure marketing rubbish, with the word iXOS appearing all the time. It also discusses the Alpha platform for SAP, even though development of this platform on NT is ending. Only 6 pages are dedicated to clustering. Only 5 pages are dedicated to High availability. .......... Bottom line, if you are a marketing guy, or a manager with no technical knowledge and you would like to have a couple of terms you can through around in a meeting to try to impress, maybe you can get some value out of the book...If you are a Systems guy looking to install SAP on NT, the SAP online documentation and Installation/upgrade guides offer far more detailed information than this book. If you don't have access to the online doc's, try another book (but make sure it has good references first..)
