This volume was originally published in 1959, and includes updated versions of discographies that were written for "High Fidelity" magazine by the author. Mr. Schonberg gives a biographical sketch of both Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann. For Chopin, the author gives discographies as of 1959 for his Piano and Orchestral Works, Solo Piano Works, Chamber Music, and Songs. For Schumann, he gives discographies as of 1959 for his Concertos, Works for Solo Instrument and Orchestra, Orchestral Works, Chamber Music, Piano Works, Vocal Works, and Melodrama. Should you buy this book? It is arcane information for the serious or professional collector. If you are like me, recordings through the decades are fascinating for their subtle (and not subtle!) differences. Mr. Schonberg has an obvious love for the composers and their works -- it shows.

Out of several versions of illustration on this book, I love the Frediric Back by far the best. His illustration adds so much more warmth and at the same time sentiment to this great story.

General Nelson A. Miles wrote a detailed, history- filled accounts of the Red River Wars and other Indian battles. Illustrations by F. Remington were a big surprise to me, as it was of a direct relative, William F. Schmalsle, Indian Scout, Guide, and Courier. The rescue of the German Sisters is a heartfelt experience. The reader will feel like one is living in the Old West, with all the joys, adventures, and tribulations that the characters experienced. The references in the back offer one further insight into the past. As Miles was involved in other battles besides those with the Indians, the history buff will find a lot of references in the back of the book which will result in many hours of pleasurable research and reading. The General Miles history trail may lead you to a long lost relative, as I found out, with numerous sources of information. So try reading the General Miles books from your library and if you like, order them from Amazon and take them home, or take them camping in the woods and plains, visit the historical places mentioned.

"The Man Who Planted Trees" is a wonderful short story about the fictional life of a man who singlehandedly restores a valley to life by becoming the Johnny Appleseed of Trees. More importantly, its about a man who, having suffered the loss of his wwife and only child, chooses to live a simple life in anonymous service with little but his own resources and his love for trees. The short-term effect is almost unnoticeable; long-term its staggering.

The wood engravings that accompany the text stand out and mirror the book's theme of asutere simplicity quite beautifully. Its a wonderful book for children, nature enthusiasts, gardeners and those looking for hope that follwoing one's heart and living out of love, rather than fear, can ultimately make a difference.

The Man Who Planted Trees is the tale of Elzeard Bouffier, a man who, after his son and wife die, spends his life reforesting miles of barren land in southern France. Bouffier's planting of thousands and thousands of trees results in many wondrous things occurring, including water again flowing in brooks that had been dry for many years. The brooks are fed by rains and snows that are conserved by the forest that Bouffier planted. The harsh, barren land is now pleasant and full of life.

Written by Jean Giono, this popular story of inspiration and hope was originally published in 1954 in Vogue as "The Man Who Planted Hope and Grew Happiness." The story's opening paragraph is as follows:

"For a human character to reveal truly exceptional qualities, one must have the good fortune to be able to observe its performance over many years. If this performance is devoid of all egoism, if its guiding motive is unparalleled generosity, if it is absolutely certain that there is no thought of recompense and that, in addition, it has left its visible mark upon the earth, then there can be no mistake."

The Man Who Planted Trees has left a "visible mark upon the earth" having been translated into several languages. In the "Afterword" of the Chelsea Green Publishing Company's edition, Norma L. Goodrich wrote that Giono donated his story. According to Goodrich, "Giono believed he left his mark on earth when he wrote Elzeard Bouffier's story because he gave it away for the good of others, heedless of payment: 'It was one of my stories of which I am the proudest. It does not bring me in one single penny and that is why it has accomplished what it was written for.'"

This special edition is very informative. Not only does it contain Giono's inspirational story, which is complemented beautifully by Michael McCurdy's wood engraving illustrations and Goodrich's informative "Afterword" about Giono, but it also contains considerable information about how wood and paper can be conserved in the section "The WoodWise Consumer." Goodrich writes about Giono's effort to have people respect trees.

"Giono later wrote an American admirer of the tale that his purpose in creating Bouffier 'was to make people love the tree, or more precisely, to make them love planting trees.' Within a few years the story of Elzeard Bouffier swept around the world and was translated into at least a dozen languages. It has long since inspired reforestation efforts, worldwide."

The Man Who Planted Trees is not only a wonderful story, it will inspire you and your children to care for the natural world.

Jean Giono's inspiring story of the "man who planted trees" reached me some days ago as a birthday gift from my two sons.They thought it an appropriate gift for me probably because I am now engaged in an effort to grow trees in some land which I bought as a barren waste land. I found the book extremely inspiring.The interesting thing is that there indeed are unsung heroes and heroines in many parts of the world who do do such inspiring work without thought of reward.Some months back I read in Indian newspapers about a poor couple in the Karnatak state of India who decided to plant trees to assuage their sorrow in being childless.As they had no land of their own they decided to plant trees on the roadside.And ended up with magnificent avenue trees on miles and miles of the road near their village. There still seems to be hope for mankind!

I first read lives of the musicians when I was about 7 yearsold or so. Then, I thought it was terrific. I still do. However, I amnow 12 years old, and now that I have paid more attention to it, I see several faults, but overall it is still a very good book. First of all, their choice of musicians is not the best. I would have recommended Debussy and Schubert, like the Kirkus Reviewer. Some of the composers I have hardly ever heard of, like Igor Stravinsky or Nadia Boulanger. And while Clara Schumann was a great pianist, I think they should have focused more on her husband, Robert, a prolific composer, whose works are among the very best. Also, some of the parts of the biographies are questionable. Frederic Chopin may not have actually been romantically involved with Aurore Dudevant (George Sand), but in love with the Countess Delphine Potocka. The book states that the Waltz in D-Flat, or Minute Waltz, was written for George Sand's dog, when in fact it was probably written for Potocka. However, the book was still very well written, and I enjoyed it, despite the possible mistakes. I recommend this book to anyone who likes music, classical or not. So sit back and enjoy!

I loved this book because it made those musicians seem like real people instead of great-all-star-super-geniuses. It is full of strange little facts about all the famous musicians like Bach,Gershwin,Beethoven and Schmann.

This book provides interesting insight into the lives of composers. I teach music to elementary and high school students and I read this book to all of my students. They all enjoy learning the details of the composers lives. The book presents the composers in such a way that the students remember the information about the composers. The book does not provide information about what the composers' music sounds like, and that is something I also like to teach. A great book to gain kids'interest in famous composers.

This book is an excellent explanation of the case for Brushy Bill Roberts as Billy the Kid. The authors do a good job of seperating fact from fiction and using all available information to dig to the bottom of Brushy Bill's identity. Before I traveled to Hico, Texas and purchased this book, I didn't beleive the claim of Brushy Bill. Even though I am still not %100 convinced about Brushy Bill, I believe the evidence is heavily on his side. It seems to me that the authors and supporters of Brushy Bill as Billy The Kid have been tormented and shunned by the supporters of Pat Garrett and the New Mexico travel industry. Through all of this torment, the supporters of Brushy Bill have stood firm. You should decide who is on the right side of this battle for yourself. You dont even have to go to Hico, Texas to get it like I did.

BRUSHY BILL DID NOT SEEK ATTENTION TO HIS REAL IDENITY, HE TRIED TO HIDE IT ALL HIS LIFE, ONCE BILL MORRISON CONFRONTED HIM HE ACKNOWLEDGED WHO HE WAS...HE KNEW TO MUCH ABOUT LINCOLN COUNTY WAR TO HAVE NOT BEEN THERE. HIS GENEALOGY HAS ESTABLISHED ALL OF THE SURNAMES HE USED AND ANYBODY THAT HAS READ THIS BOOK AND THE 4 BOOKS WRITTEN ABOUT HIM WOULD HAVE TO CONCLUDE THAT HE WAS THE KID. I HAVE READ ALL 5 BOOKS THAT I KNOW OF THAT DEAL WITH BRUSHY BILL AND AFTER READING THE FIRST 4, THAN READING THE RETURN OF THE OUTLAW BILLY THE KID I'M MORE CONVINCED THAN EVER OF WHO HE WAS. TRADITIONAL HISTORY SHOULD BE RE-WRITTEN. POLITICS & MONEY DEMAND THAT THE TRUTH NOT BE KNOWN. At last, some solid science has been applied to the controversy regarding who was killed by Pat Garrett. William Henry "Bushy Bill" Roberts was Billy the Kid, as shown by the computer comparisons of faces conducted by the University of Texas, making them a statistical "match". This is a noteworthy continuation of the work by Harvard Ph.D. Charles L. Sonnichsen who wrote Alias Billy the Kid in 1955, showing Roberts could quite possibly be the Kid. Now computer science has answered the long-debated question. Garrett shot the wrong man. All these years people have relied on the doubtful word of Ash Upson and his fanciful tale of a Robin Hood-type figure, with no facts to support any of his claims regarding the Kid. This is a compelling book filled with facts and statistically valid comparisons of the two images. Only the die-hards now believe the Kid is buried at Fort Sumner. He lies in a pauper's grave in Hamilton County, Texas, having died peacefully of a heart attack in 1950. Garrett, and his ghost writer Upson, were both frauds, and modern science has given us undeniable proof. A great read for those with an open mind!!

It's a very good book shows a lot about creativity in animals and show a lot of generation of new behaviors in humans. I think that the model of Generativity Theory is very interesting but is necesary to review with more detail its problems and advantages.

I have nothing to do with psichology ( I am an MBA with strong business background, yes, some MBAs know squad about business). But after listening to this useless debate (behaviorists, freudians and the like)for so many times in my life I decided to study each one of them. This book has achieved its goal for me. To tell me what the heck Skinner was up to. I liked his ideas, ideals and theories, although some are quite strange and not quite possible to be real. If Skinner was a genious as ALL of his followers claim that's fine with me, but he wasn't perfect, and in many passages of the book readers will be able to pin point some madness.

Great book overall, just go easy with all you read in there.

This was a succinct overview of the way three psychologists interpret human personality and behavior. Freud, Skinner, and Rogers are all leaders and representatives of schools of thought in psychology, and this book took the mystery away.

This text covers several topics that other books tend to overlook, making it a frequent choice for undergraduate courses. However, the effectiveness of the book is dependent primarily on the quality of the counterpart teacher, as the book is quite difficult to understand on its own.
Many of the proofs in the book omit the most difficult and complicated steps, which are above the level of an undergraduate to be able to work on their own. Also, the book chooses to rigorously prove certain Electromagnetic properties while completely omitting other while still assuming that the reader has a full knowledge of both.
As a reference, this book also falls short in that, in the fourth edition at least, most of the important constants and equations are left scattered throughout the text and not included in the summaries. Also, many of the fundamental mathematical tools are not presented in their entirety and instead rely on the completion of the problems at the end of the chapters. While this is good in that it motivates the student to do the calculations themselves, it offers no recourse to a student who has made a mistake in any problem or who lacks a preexisting intuitive knowledge of the material.

If its important to you I am a rising Senior in the study of physics at UCONN. I wanted at first to give this 3 stars, 3.5 is not available so I rounded up for on reason: I feel that my understanding of E&M is rather well developed, and I learned from this book. My professor was also quite good and he supplemented from the Griffiths text, which I have not read myself, but these may have influenced my view of the quality of this book. The probems sets I believe to be challenging and reasonable, the actual text is not in any way PHYSICAL though. The math is extensive, a pro and con simultaeneously. Everyone using this book will probably be at the appropriate level of skill therein, but a certain proficiency in READING math, feeling it in a way is necassary here. My teacher was the source of most of the education I recieved in E&M but the problem sets in the RMC played a nearly equal role. I will say that the treatment of the Dirac Delta function was foggy at best, otherwise it was fine with the porper mathematical background

RMC is a clear textbook about electrodynamics. You don't have to have much previos knowledge about the subject to follow the theory, but you should be familiar with the basics of vector analysis. There are quite many examples and the problems are reasonably difficult (answers are provided).As a whole this book covers the theory well and some of the applications too.
