Stoudenmire deserves more recognization
Violent El Paso tamed by Stoudenmire
Leon C. Metz was a great author and storyteller with unique writing humor. This book was based on true events. It was well researched and written. I have absolutely no doubts that Mr. Metz attempts to bring out favorable traits of Stoudenmire in order to help him gain much deserved respect and nationwide recognition. Stoudenmire enforced the laws no differently than Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett and Elfego Baca. Stoudenmire deserves the same honor. Stoudenmire's period in this town was awfully short, but very colorful. Stoudenmire had no fear, not even guns or death. He was able to outdraw every opponent. He sent his wild bullets to harvest souls and sent men on their last jolting rides to the cemetery. His large structure and deadly reputation were all El Paso needed to send hard-cored violent outlaws whining and putting their tails between their shaking legs into hiding or digging their own graves. Stoudenmire's toughness and courage was no match for the outlaws combined together.
. . .
This book is highly recommended for folks who seek excitement in Wild West justice and a wild marshal to match!

Metz Knows El Paso
This book describes the primordial beginnings of the Rio Grande to the evolution of the international gateway called El Paso. During the city's moments of crisis , and achievement, its "turning points" are all succinctly told-the coming of the military, the Civil War in the West, the violence of the gunfighters, the shady ladies, and boundary disputes. Metz is a sought after lecturer on gunfighters of the Southwest, and, in 1985, he was honored by the Western Writers of America with the Saddleman Award for his overall contributions to western writing.
This is an excellent book; concise, well-written.
Metz does a great job of telling the history of the city. He is an effective writer and knows how to hold the reader's interest. He is good at making sure that each of the ethnic groups within the city are represented and their migration explained. Clarity is certainly one of his strong suits. If you want to know more about the city, this 125-pager is a great place to start.

Don't Travel Texas Without It
Few states have so many varied regions with such distinct local flavors. This book brings to life the past and present. Leon Metz is well qualified to lasso the immensity of Texas and bring it under control. Metz takes the various regions of Texas and gives a sweeping historical account for each. He then concentrates on the towns and historical sites where the exciting adventures happened. Many illustrations and maps.

Shooters
The Shooters is full of great portraits of the Old West most famous characters. Not only is it painstakingly accurate, but it is as enjoyable as any western movie. It not only details the lives of the West more well- Known figures, such as Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid, but unknowns as well, such as Print Olive, Bass Outlaw, and Johnny Ringo. It is a great book for the scholar of the Old West or for someone who just wants the nuts and bolts.
A truly exallent work
Having spent the vast majority of my life in the South West and the very city where Mr. Metz live I have had a chance to see first hand the fabrications that a formed about such me as Billy the Kid, John W. Harden, Wyatt Earp, and others. With this in mind it is nice to find a true to life and exqisitly written book about the lives thease men really lead. This book is a literary gold mine for all those interusted in the history of the American West.

A fascinating history of the US/Mexico border
This book is a fascinating review of the history of the US/Mexico border. While Metz has a very clear political view, the facts show a US government steeped in bureaucracy and political expediency.
The book reads like a text book and is a bit dry. However, I recommend that you take the time to read passages twice to thoroughly undertand them. Its worth your time.
The sections on the Colorado River and Rio Grande are particularly revealing and disturbing in their long term implications.

traveling through time viewing snippets of old El Paso life
Leon Metz's El Paso Chronicles is not written in the standard non-fiction style, but is a fascinating look at many different eras of El Paso history. It is a book that takes the reader on a chronological tour of the development of the El Paso Southwest and a look at many of the colorful characters who made this town. It is something you can read a little here, a little there, and not feel you are losing the plot. A good coffee break book.

excellent source of life in Texas after the Civil War
Leon Metz creates a very fine life portrait of John Selman. Information about him seems scarce until Elpaso Texas, but Metz provides valuable information about life in the lawless days of Texas, thourgh exhaustive research. Metz's book allows the reader to create his own image and opinion of Selman. I thought the book read quite quickly, very informative, and entertaining. Anyone interested in The Old West, I highly suggest reading!!!

Another Lame Excuse for Writing Texas History
Although always a gentleman, Mr. Metz, seems to have tried to get into the head of Hardin. This comes across as if Hardin is justifing his misdeeds. Frankly, Hardin is not worth of the acclaim and now honors that Texas is doing him. Metz's research was excellent, but I think that this is a misguided effort to simulate interest in the wrong sort of Texas characters
Just the facts, M'am
Yes, you get the facts of John Wesley Hardin's life, probably more of them than you wanted to know. What you don't get is any kind of decent prose.
Best biography of Hardin yet.
Having considered myself a sort of amateur historian of Texas figures, I know quite a bit about J.W. Hardin. Leon Metz's biography is the most honest and thoroughly researched one I've come across yet. This along with Metz's engaging writing style made this book a hard one to put down. He doesn't glorify or vilify this Texas gunman, and the reader comes away with a new understanding of the times and tribulations of those who lived on the frontier. I'm a hard sell, and yet I would recommend this book to anyone interested in characters of the American West.

The "4 Deads in 5 seconds" gunfight was the most thrilling. I felt as if I actually witnessed it all and witnessed folks scattered at the very sight of Marshal.
Hollywood should make a movie on Marshal Stoudenmire. I think he's worthy a movie such as it is for Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday in "Tombstone" and "Wyatt Earp".
