Definitely a departure ...
... from Gotanda's earlier, better known pieces -- forget linear narrative of any kind, this is a halucinatory dream gone trippy. Saw this in NYC years ago at Manhattan Theater Club and was mighty impressed with Gotanda's use of language, the way he plays with phrases, the way he learns to work within and outside of the language box. It's entertaining, it's thought-provoking. By curtain's fall, you have to ask if you yourself are not standing on your head, trying to somehow make sense of an upside world.

A Wild Ride
DAY STANDING ON ITS HEAD is a wild ride into the psyche of a 40-something professor asking the age-old question, IS THAT ALL THERE IS? The play is highly theatrical, and, as we staged it at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre & Asian American Theatre Company, full of quirks and surprises, including a few wacky song numbers and a whirlwind of activity. The story is both poignant and pertinent, centering on the universal quest for meaning in this transient existence. I recommend it highly to anyone looking for an engaging, truly theatrical work to direct, to perform in, or to peruse with pleasure.

A Play worth Performing! Stunning Content
Our school recently did a one-act play version of "Children of a Lesser God." Let me say that the subject is very embracing: a hearing-impaired woman's struggle for acceptance in a hearing world. I find that the most qouted line in our play was from Sarah: "It is a silence full of sound." Truthfully, the most gut-wrenching scene is near the end, as the two main characters have an argument over lip-reading as opposed to signing. If you'll take my opinion, you should definately purchase this playbook. I considered it to be a real eye-opener.

The most honest portrayal of desire
Dreams of Longlasting is the only book I have read that not only manages to convey an image of the world I live in, but also to hold an optimistic view in the end. So many love stories are full of unrealistic characters and situations. In all Medoff's characters, I can see myself or people I know. I have read this book five or six times, and each time Medoff's humor is fresh and his emotion rings true. "Dear God That I'm Pretty Sure Doesn't Exist," the main character prays, "please help me to forget the only person in my life I ever wanted to remember even after I'm dead." Medoff talks about love in a way that is familiar to me and at the same time more noble than any feeling I have ever felt.

a devilare in rebellion
this play is the IDEAL MAN in America. He is trapped. Doesn't know where he's going. Works day to day:with memories that stitch him and make him go violently out of control.

The main character represents the common anger ideal man in society...trapped within his own hell hole and not knowing how to communicate with the outside world. This defintely is one of the best plays I've read.

The Hero Trilogy: When You Comin Back, Red Ryder? the Heart Outright the Majestic Kid
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (1990)
Author: Mark Medoff
Amazon base price: $9.95
Used price: $8.00

his early plays are his best
Mark's earlier plays are often forgotten next to his Children of a Lesser God. It's tragic though because he wrote exceptional early work. My favorite is The Heart Outright. I loved it because it's one of the only few plays that really show a love of movies. The main character is a movie bum like myself.:) When you Comin back Red Ryder, though is written in the style of the melodramatic western...which I think was very clever. The trilogy is some of the best work of the theatre.

A Real Eye-Opener

it was pretty good
I really liked the plot of this book, but it was a little confusing because they have many scenes going on at the same time. The book is about a speech teacher trying to teacher a deaf person to speek and lip read. The topic is really interesting, because I haven't really read a lot of plays about the deaf, and the struggles that they go through. There is also a big romance in the book, but I think that the romance moves a little too quickly, and in that way is unrealistic. The play is in 2 short acts. I really liked the notes from the author in the beginning about the struggle to write this play because of a deaf friend, and about how it was put on in a small theater and then moved to broadway, and then it won a tony for best actress & actor, and best play! I suggest that you read it because it brings up a lot of interesting issues!

This play was very interesting, it kept you wondering.
This was a very interesting story. It was full of suspence. I could not put it down for one second. It makes you think, and it actually gives you a chance to feel what each character is going through.

The Quintessential Confrontational Drama
When a man with a gun and an attitude interrupts the daily on-goings in a diner by the highway, the results are bound to be exciting. This is an impeccable play that constantly leaves you on the edge of your seat. You will never anticipate the twists and turns of this intense piece. Occasionally disturbing, sometimes funny, but always interesting, this is theater at its best. A must read for any thespian.

i have seen the wind, and it's cold enough for me
this book opens with blackwood's great story: the wendigo. B is the master of the setting, noone can create the background and atmosphere like him. a very well written story from Brennan here. and Meloff's story is also an interesting read. derleth is at his best here. i don''t care that much for the guy, have never considered him to be HPL's great successor or anything, but he knows how to write, and i have always considered his story about Ithaqua to be his best contribution. the rest of the stories are well written. i don't think any of chaosium's anthologies contains of so much good writing than this. but good is not great. and the rest of the stories never turns out to be really good. the suspence killed by irrelevant writing going on for too long, mostly. sad. but the book is still wort reading
