The ideas and dream-scape art in this book are intriquing.
This book is about animals that come to us in dreams. Hillman encourages us not to turn them into "dream symbols" because in so doing we lose the animal. Instead we should recognize it as real, as choosing to come to us from the great unconscious. He suggests that we honor the animal for being present by asking it why it appeared in the dream. "What is the animal offering you by coming into your life in the dream?" Through exploration of this idea, Hillman feels we can regain our kinship with animals. He offers the exciting idea that animals are trying to communicate with us in order to stop their exploitation and extinction. The ideas offered in this book are of interest to anyone who appreciates and respects life in this time when many species are driven to the brink of survival. The artwork is hauntingly beautiful.

An excellent TEXTBOOK with the more current approach.
It is a BRAVE book that runs against the grains when compared to the regular, run-of-the-mill management information systems book.

This is a TEXT BOOK, for students at the junior level in the US.

What I like about the book is it is brave in accepting TQM, Reengineering and Michael Porter's value chain model as a set of key to gain a strategic prowess.

When a stance is taken as to ACCEPT those, then we don't need to worry about proofs for that stance. Let's just believe them.

Next, those set of systems translate into strategies. Strategies must be quantified, right? When you quantify a strategy by computerizing it then you come face to face with computerized information systems.

Then you'll be asked about Data Communications, Internet (the media that makes those data communicate), the client/server, the data base, the whole bit.

Of course, the text is very kind to include the Economics consideration on the wake of establishing the systems, also included is the systems development aspect when we really want to create an information systems project.

This is an excellent book for those who need a survey on the huge and much threatening field of Management Information Systems - Computer Based.

Very helpful, excellent illustrations & photos
I have used the earlier version of this book for a while and liked the fine photographs and concise, well chosen information on each page. The photos are interspersed with line drawings of critical floral features, a nice touch. I had only wished that the authors would produce a version with some of the common grasses and sedges. Voila, the 3rd edition includes a section on these ubiquitous but often overlooked plants that is up to the standard of the rest of the book. A note for novices: the book is organized by plant families, not flower color - this makes the book a bit harder to consult for occaisional use (there are simple keys to help you get to the right place) but getting to know the plant families will pay off in the long run. A very helpful book for the novice, advanced amateur, or botanist getting to know the area for the first time.

The Magic Bullet
this book is a slightly updated version of edition number three. not much was changed - either version scores a 5 in my book. like many others, i have invested several hundred dollars in RE investment "how-to's". i seriously believe that you can obtain more usable, practical (read truthful and usable) information from this single volume than all the others on my bookshelf. you won't find a more comprehensive, relavent work on the subject. beyond content, its also written in a manner that invites understanding and complex subjects are dealt with in just the right amount of detail. i strongly recommend this work as a basic primer on making a living via real estate investing. the author(s) obviously take their subject matter seriously - offering a high degree of integrity with this book.

Good solid book
Among all of the books on real estate investing, this one gives you the best solid introduction. Once you decide the exact strategy you wish to pursue, you will want more specialized detail (like on renovations). I also liked the authors' approach in that they tell you how to really analyze your local market to develop ideas that will likely yield the best profits. I detest books that lay out step by step the author's suppossed "secrets to success"--when in fact that strategy might not work in a different place or time. ( One book I read told me to only buy 3-BR, 2-BTH, brick houses. We don't even have brick houses here!)

Packed with information
Read this book. You won't be disappointed. For my money it covers all the topics from foreclosures to financing to market strategy to leasing, etc. better tha any of the other competing books. The authors show a depth and breadth of knowledge and experience that convinced me that they really knew what they were talking about. Also, if you're thinking of moving some money from stocks to real estate, this book will show you the merits of that decision. A great book for beginners or pros in my opinion.

California Sabers
A useful, highly detailed account of the troops, some of whom were from California, who made up the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry, and their actions during the Civil War. They did much of their fighting in the Valley Campaign of '64, and those battles are described at length.

The writing here may be a bit too dry for amateurs. I had two major criticisms:

As a Californian, I wanted to know more about where in the state the men came from. Normally, in a history of a unit, one gets a roster with places of origin, peactime occupation, where enlisted, how dismissed and so forth. This information would have been interesting to me.

Secondly, the author is not to be trusted blindly on matters outside his specific topic. Especially, his statements on prisons and the treatment of prisoners should be qualified by examination of other texts ("Portals to Hell" is a decent secondary source). As befits a historian of a Unionist regiment, he is of clear Unionist sympathies and while I don't think he forsakes scholarly objectivity too badly, readers wanting to learn more about Mosby, the regiment's primary antagonist, will want to look at other sources as well.

Though flawed, this book still will prove invaluable for anyone curious about Californians in the Civil War.

California Gold !
Finally, in print, the full story of California's finest contribution to the preservation of the Union during the American Civil War. A story ,until now, only found in scattered newspaper articles, memoirs, diarys, official records, and brief spotlight accounts.James McLean has scoured the available information for the past twenty years to produce a most complete and un-whitewashed account of the service, from concept to muster out,of these brave and able Bear Flaggers. His detailed research leads us from campaign to campaign outlining every move of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment with detail from command down to personal insight from the troopers themselves. Along the way we meet many luminaries such as Col. John S. Mosby and boy General George Armstrong Custer both of whom's popular romantic shine does not glow as well under the objective light provided by Mr McLeans research.Other Personalities such as General Phillip Sheridan, Col. Charles Russell Lowell, L.T Col. Caspar Crowinshield, Maj. Gen. Henry Halleck , Gen. Richard S Ewell, Lt. Gen Jubal Early, and a host of others all take their turn under this able historians pen. The end result being a finely researched piece of true history unmassaged by the romantic fog of time.A must read for Californians and American Civil War enthusiasts alike. This is an almost epic story of California's most determined patriotic troopers and their adventures from San Francisco to Appomattox. Having researched this same group of Californian Troopers for the past ten years I was ,at times, amazed at the depth of his research as he mentions things about unit details I previously thought only I knew!! A very fine treatment of a much over looked group of American Heros, the California Hundred and Battalion .

Detailed book, badly presented
I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand it excels in terms of content, tackling the more complex issues of .NET remoting including the creation of custom channel sinks; on the other hand it is severely let down by its poor presentation.

The book doesn't come with a CD, although viewing the code in its entirity is essential to understanding the issues presented in this book. Fortunately the code is available for download from the net.

The authors often fail to provide a substantial overview of the particular topics discussed in this book and present pieces of code in a piecemeal fashion which has no relevance until you reach the end of the chapter and are able to piece it all together.

This is a good book, but if you are new to the topic of .NET remoting, as I was, then prepare to dip into MSDN and spend time reviewing the code, in order to get a true understanding of this topic.

Well written, easy to follow guide
This manuscript was extremely helpful to my colleagues and me in our most recent project. For anyone dealing with a .Net initiative involving any sort of distributed, and most importantly scalable, application this guide is a must read.

Cutler's brigade at Gettysburg
This book is a good example of how a brigade history must be written. It tells us about one off the brigades that acompished very much in the morning encounter on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg. For every regiment their stories before gettysburg are well detailed and easily to read. (even for a foreigner) Furthermore it tells us stories we did not expect in a book like this. About what after gettysburg, what happened to the wounded, the prisonners, the dead and the survivors. Of course the part about the fiirst and third day's fightings is well detailed. A minus, the pictures are not very clear, it is not very easy to see what they tlet you see and actually the don't tell us anything. A good book, must be in every gettysburg librarie.

Nothing Great
I bought this book as requirement for an MIS class. The book has good graphics, but the authors have tried to cram in a lot of information. As a result, things have'nt been explained systematically. One has to move to a later chapter to look for things discussed earlier. The quality of writing leaves much to be desired. In a nutshell, the book is only ordinary. It is much like a glossy story book for children, certainly not worth the price.

Full of Information on Information System
If you want make a decision whether you apply a new Information System or not to your organization, buy this book. There are lots of real world examples and reasons to go to IT. It is an excellent book for all those who are in the any level of management position with little or no IT background. If you are going to develop a software product and be a multimillionaire, buy one. It will inspire you. It is also a marvelous book for IT professionals who want to know real world of business and its relationships with what they are doing. As usual, every good thing has it own short falls. This book is not organized well enough to balance with the weight of subjects it discusses. For example, Chapter 2.1 INFORMATION SYSTEMS: CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS does not have any concepts and definitions of IS. Rather, you can find them in Chapter 1 (page 17). It also contains same concepts in different places and repeat similar explanations.

One of the best textbook!
This is one of the best book in IT Management (for upper level undergraduage or graduate level course). I have found that the book has been very updated in the pace of the current trend, and is providing one of the best and balanced treatment (for very broad field, but with fairly in-depth coverages in each critical area of IS and IT management) with the solid managerial and profound organizational groundwork. Some of the chapters that I enjoy reading is Ch.3 (Strategic Information Systems), Ch.4 (Business Process Reengineering and Information Technology), Ch.6 (Electronic Commerce), and especially Ch.12 and Ch.13 (Planning for Information Technology and Systems, Information Technology Economics) for Managing IT. My appraisal about this book is its well-balanced and insightful critiques (to rescue and enpower many of the simple and naive, or stubborn, from many of the crafty propaganda, illustions and deceptions of today's "rise-and-die-quick" empty promises and sales pictchs in this field). This is one of the main reason that I have adopted this book for my students.

Outdated
You know your dealing with a book that's outdated when you read "Most first loans are made by savings and loans associations." No offense intended to the author but although many of the concepts are good, they are not well-explained or presented for beginners to easily understand. I only understood as much as I did because I am in the real estate industry. Better choices are out there.
